How to target long tail keywords
-
Apologies if this is already answered, I'm a newbie. I'm looking to determine how to target long tail keywords. I'm supporting a site that is new and with very small budgets in the very competitive life insurance market. If we devise a list of long tail keywords, should we then add those to the page titles, meta descriptions etc rather than the short tail ones that the site will never rank for anyway?
-
Writing unique and deep content about the subject.
For example, If you are targeting the long tail keyword: 'cool buildings found in new york city' and 'the best subway stations in the world.' you should write really good content about the two subjects. Make sure to try to grab multiple long-tail keywords around a certain topic and make sure the content is valuable to your visitors. Not just content created purely for ranking on certain keywords.

Matt is right - fresh, unique blog content using your targeted long-tail keywords will go a long way.
One added suggestion is to do a search using the keywords, make note of the top 10 ranking domains, and then do a "[keyword] site:[rankingdomain.com]" search to see how many times the ranking domains use the keyword and in what context.
Those domains are your benchmarks, so emulating what works but putting your unique twist on it (and not straight up duplicating it) should help get you on the right path. Make note of their meta tags, linking domains, etc. Then do them one better
-
You could - although I would suggest that if you create content for the long tail keywords it will perform better than if you just slap some labels on existing content. I would think the plan would be:
-
Create new long tail content (blogs are #1 for this, I'd guess.)
-
Rank the long tail stuff and get more notice, thus gaining more backlinks and more pass through to your head keywords (short tail).
-
Then create a mix of long & short tail, keep growing in both areas.

How to Target Other Countries Using TLDs?
I would like to know if it is possible (and beneficial) to target other countries using country-based TLDs? When visiting a company website for instance, you often get redirected to your country's site. For instance, when you visit cafepress.com from Canada, you get redirected to cafepress.ca. Since both websites (cafepress.com and cafepress.ca) have the same content, how they get away with it with no duplicate content issues?

Using meta keywords
Hello, I've read conflicting opinions regarding the use of meta keywords. I know Matt Cutts stated a few years ago that Google does not use them as a ranking signal but many still use them. This raises a few questions: 1. Is there any reason to still use meta keywords? 2. Isn't it just a way to let your competitors know what you're optimizing for? 3. How do other search engines treat meta keywords? Thanks!

Would using javascript onclick functions to override href target be ok?
Hi all, I am currently working on a new search facility for me ecommerce site... it has very quickly dawned on me that this new facility is far better than my standard product pages - from a user point of view - i.e lots of product attributes for customers to find what they need faster, ability to compare products etc... All in all just better. BUT NO SEO VALUE!!! i want to use this search facility instead of my category/product pages... however as they are search pages i have "robots noindex them" and dont think its wise to change that... I have spoken to the developers of this software and they suggested i could use some javascript in the navigation to change the onlclick function to take the user to the search equivelant of the page... They said this way my normal pages are the ones that are still indexed by google etc, but the user has the benefit of using the improved search pages... This sounds perfect, however it also sounds a little deceptive... and i know google has loads of rules about these kinds of things, the last thing i want is to get any kind of penalty or any negative reaction from an SEO point of view... I am only considering this as it will improve the user experience on my website... Can any one advise if this is OK, or a "no no"... P.s for those wondering i use an "off the shelf" cart system and it would cost me an arm and a leg to have these features built into my actual category / product pages.

Creating a Target URL For 301 Redirect in Wordpress
I am confused as to what to put in as the target URL. Is this just a new URL that I must create a name for? I am having trouble finding any answer for this on the internet, just more people asking the same question. I am finally realizing that all the information is found right here at SEOmoz to both learn and ask questions about.

Sub-Page Ranks for a Main Keyword
A sub page now ranks for my main key word (the file name is exact match to the key word) it completely replaced my index page in rankings. Would 301 redirecting the sub-page to my index page (which is more informative and has a whole lot more links pointing towards it) be a good idea or vice versa? Or would optimizing that page (the sub page) be the best way to go (the sub page doesn't have single inbound link pointing to...). This happened about a week ago. Thanks!
