SEO friendly url strategy...
-
Hi guys i just wanted your expert opinion on keywords in urls. The example i'm giving you is in regards to a ecommerce website:
Option 1: www.example.com/shop/coffee/coffee-beans/brand-coffee-beans-500gr
Option 2: www.example.com/shop/coffee/beans/brand-coffee-beans-500gr
We sell coffee so i'll keep the example relevant
Does it make a difference on how the keywords are stacked throughout?
Would the search engine combine the two keywords eg. .../coffee/beans/... or would i be better of having .../coffee/coffee-beans/... and is there a penalty for having the same phrase more than once in the url?
I hope my question makes sense...
Looking forward to your opinions and ideas!

Hey Segafredo,
Don't you think these URL's are a little bit long?
There must be a better way to organise your URL structure.
www.domain.com/shop/coffee/beans/brand for example. You could leave out the second 'coffe-beans' and the 500gr could be an attribute of that product. This way it won't be in the URL. It would make your URL's easier to remember. Makes it look less 'spammy' and just look a lot cleaner.
You would still rank for 'coffee', 'beans' and 'coffee beans'.
Your name is Segafredo so if you are really from the major company Segafredo then the short URL's would be a lot better. A big brand like that would get visitors and links by itself and messy URL's would do your reputation no good.Hope i was of assistence. If you have any other questions let me know

Yeah I think there'll be little-to-no difference. Always put users ahead of Google and you'll come out on top.
Perhaps you could try 5 categories in one convention, 5 in another, measure the click-throughs and then roll forward with the one that works best for you?

So basically the search engine won't see the relevance between .../coffee/beans/... but rather .../coffee/coffee-beans/...
If i understand it right from the video? Or i shouldn't worry about it to much as long as it makes sense to users?

Hi Luca,
It doesn't make a difference to your rankings. However Matt Cutts from Google suggests you go for Option 1, as from a usability perspective users tend to prefer it and so it may improve your click-through rates when you are found.

Sitemaps, 404s and URL structure
Hi All! I recently acquired a client and noticed in Search Console over 1300 404s, all starting around late October this year. What's strange is that I can access the pages that are 404ing by cutting and pasting the URLs and via inbound links from other sites. I suspect the issue might have something to do with Sitemaps. The site has 5 Sitemaps, generated by the Yoast plugin. 2 Sitemaps seem to be working (pages being indexed), 3 Sitemaps seem to be not working (pages have warnings, errors and nothing shows up as indexed). The pages listed in the 3 broken sitemaps seem to be the same pages giving 404 errors. I'm wondering if auto URL structure might be the culprit here. For example, one sitemap that works is called newsletter-sitemap.xml, all the URLs listed follow the structure: http://example.com/newsletter/post-title Whereas, one sitemap that doesn't work is called culture-event-sitemap.xml. Here the URLs underneath follow the structure http://example.com/post-title. Could it be that these URLs are not being crawled / found because they don't follow the structure http://example.com/culture-event/post-title? If not, any other ideas? Thank you for reading this long post and helping out a relatively new SEO!

Changing all urls
A client of mine has a wordpress website that is installed in a directory, called "site". So when you go to www.domain.com you are redirected to www.domain.com/site. We all know how bad it is to have a redirect fron your subdomain to another page. In this case I measured a loss of 5 points of page authority. The question is: what is the best practice to remove the "site" from the address and changing all the urls? Should I use the webmaster tool to tell to Google that the site is moving? It's not 100% true, cause the site is just moving one level up. Should I install a copy of the website under www.domain.com and just redirect 301 every old page to its new url? This way I think the site would be deindexet for 2/3 months. Any suggestions or tips welcome! Thanks DoMiSol

Redirection Impact on SEO
Need help urgently. There is the situation [This is how is it working now]: 1. Have a global landing page [say when user types in www.mysite.com - takes user to the global landing page: [www.mysite.com/global/en.html]](http://www.mysite.com/global/en.html] ) 2. Users from this landing page can select a country on his/her choice and get redirected say: [www.mysite.com/us/en.html] Would like to change the functionality as below: 1. When user types in www.mysite.com 1a. Would find the location of the request based on GEO IP and if the request is coming from North America region then would redirect the users to: www.mysite.com/us/en.html 1b. If the request is from any other location/region then it would continue to work as it is currently working: take the user to the global landing page: www.mysite.com/global/en.html Would this change have any negative impact or not found by search engines from SEO perspective? If it does then what are the impacts and if does not then why not. If it does then what is the best possible way to address this request. Appriciate your help. Thanks, Koushik Roy
