SEO Moz Keyword Ranking Tool
-
The SEO Moz keyword ranking tool is useful and fairly accurate but it would be more useful to know why the ranking changed. Can the tool provide any insight in this regard?
-
In short, the answer is....
It is impossible to accurately say why Google changed the rankings.
Anybody who says that they can do this is full of BS. There are hundreds of variables.
-
In theory, it would, but right now we don't have a lot of data about actual changes on any given site. We could track the ranking changes, but not the causal factors. We're working on metrics like what we use on MozCast - basically trying to figure out baseline "flux" for any given campaign, so that you can understand how much movement is normal vs. unusual. Even that is tricky. Rankings fluctuate all the time (even on page refresh, in some cases), so step 1 is sorting out what's abnormal. Then, we have to tie it to things like known algorithm updates and on-page changes.
-
Instead of reverse engineering perhaps a comparative analysis back to the previous measurement point may work? Such a comparison could, in theory, highlight the inputs that changed which may shed light on why the ranking changed. As always theory may be more difficult in practice but if it could be done the why it happened would provide more value than just what happened when it comes to the SERP change
-
I can't argue that that would be useful, but to tell you why your ranking changed would basically require reverse-engineering the algorithm. If we could do that, believe me, we would
In terms of future directions, I see us heading a couple of places (this is partly my knowledge of the product, and partly speculative):
(1) Tracking more aggregate metrics, as opposed to individual keyword rankings (including aggregate rankings). The value of any individual ranking is declining as the SERPs become more diverse.
(2) Tracking broader analytics, including landing-page metrics. This may be a necessity as Google strips away more and more keyword data. We expect [not provided] to only increase, for example.
(3) Separating keyword visibility from keyword opportunity. Visibility is a broader sense of how well a keyword or group of keywords are performing (not just ranking, but CTR, social, etc.) and opportunity would be areas that you may be missing out on. I think opportunity metrics would be a lot more actionable than just rank-tracking, but it's not an easy task.
This is something many people on the team put a lot of thought and time into, but as Google and SEO both evolve, the target is always moving.

Yes is a gret idea
The ideal would be to make a software where you register what you have change every day in the your websites and actual positions and more add the date and content of crawler changed.
and then try to analyze the data.

Hi Chris that's a great idea.
I use all the tools as a holistic solution, i audit all my client pages, look for the fixes make the changes and then monitor.
Thats the best way i have found, simply because, as you know there are so many factors going on in the serp.
love to see what others are saying

Keywords and keyword traffic
Hi I am struggling to know what keywords i should be targeting and how the website should be best optimised for said keywords. The website offers bespoke service in the lake district UK a popular tourist destination, The business operates within say a 30 km riadus of the area. So target vistors to the website would specifically be looking for services in the lake district. The trouble is for many targeted keywords for the area are quite low or no data shown. For example: tipi camping lake district, tipi hire lake district, Glamping lake district However nationally keywords for the service have a lot higher traffic i.e. tipi hire or tipi camping, glamping what keywords should be my target? and should I targeting my website for? I don't want to target customers looking for these services outside of the lake district and also by targeting keywords without the term lake district means my competition is greater as i'm competing with the whole of the Uk for serivces It can't provide. please advise thanks

Ranking Page #1 for Keyword without Hypen, Not at all for Keyword with Hyphen
Hi There! So I work in an industry where there are different conventions for referring to, searching on and spelling the industry name. For example, let's pretend there were a variety of different conventions for referring to the SEO industry. So someone could search for S-EO, SEO, sEO, etc. and those would all be accepted and understood means of referring to the industry. If we use the SEO example as a comparison for our industry, the two most common conventions would be S-EO and SEO. Using this example, we rank on the first page for the term "SEO" but do not rank AT ALL for the term "S-EO". We have a high-value piece of content that is targeted in the following way: "S-EO (SEO): The Basics Guide" so it is more targeted at the hyphenated word but does not rank at all for the hyphenated version, whereas it is page one for the non-hyphenated term. As additional pieces of context: -In general, our site is more targeted at the hyphenated term and there are places where we rank in the top spot for both the hyphenated and non-hyphenated versions. For example, we rank in a top 2 position for both S-EO & SEO software but do not rank at all for the broader "S-EO" term. -There are times when we do appear on page one for the term "S-EO" but it's typically only for a matter or hours or days and then we disappear entirely from the SERPs for that term. We consistently appear for "SEO." -I currently do not believe we are dealing with a penalty of any sort - our link profile is clean and our spam score per Moz is 2 / 17. Any thoughts or ideas as to what is going on here and how we can potentially rank for the term "S-EO?"

We killed our SEO, but how come some of our keywords are still in the top 1-3
I am looking for the answer for this interesting question: 1. I have a static page with NO information on it, this is almost completelyblank, only a search box on it, which does nothing! The information it contains is absolutely zero, but the page has got a specific URL which is = the keyword i will look for 2. And i have another page which is fully optimized with the help of on page grader (97%) for anoter specific keyword Q, in case of 1: Searching in google for a keyword which is = the page www.domain.hu/keyword, and i will have top 1-3 serp!???? (i say it again, the page contains no information...and the keyword is really frequent, in google adwords it says that this keyword which has got high competition) in case of 2. i have the /url which is completely the same as the keyword, have 97% on page grade, and i see that week by week i can only move upwards a little in the serp. Created unique content a lot, made several changes on this page and like no position changing. So the question is WHY in case 1 i can be with no information in (empty static page) top 1-3 for a really hard keyword, and why i cannot move upward on the list for a not so frequent keyword however i did everything i could??

Why? Keyword ranking on Google go under and down regularly
I have a group of keyword that constantly move within the Google SERP. One week they are in the top 3 spots the next they fall down to position 7+ (in some cases they even fall 20 places) then after this they eventually go back to their most regular position within the top 3 spots. Can anyone please explain why this keep happening?

Is there an search marketing / keyword tool in existence that can solve my need?
I'm looking for a tool that can do the following:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | PTC4SEO
Organize a keyword universe and its data/metrics:
-track keyword data over time (search volumes/trends, relative competition metrics, rankings,
etc)
-Sort keywords into buckets/silos/ad groups
-allow you to assign individual keywords to multiple silos/groups and show the relationships between groups based on keyword relationships.
-incorporate a site map
-tie keyword targets to static pages, informational content (SEO) & landing pages (PPC)
-help with KW and/or competitive research (optional)
-tie into web analytics / marketing on-demand software (optional) I know that this is a lot of functionality, but for enterprise search marketing, this could be a game changer for my strategy (if it exists currently) or for the industry (if it doesn't exist). Please share you solution suggestions here...0
