Keywords and keyword traffic
-
Hi
I am struggling to know what keywords i should be targeting and how the website should be best optimised for said keywords.
The website offers bespoke service in the lake district UK a popular tourist destination, The business operates within say a 30 km riadus of the area. So target vistors to the website would specifically be looking for services in the lake district. The trouble is for many targeted keywords for the area are quite low or no data shown.
For example: tipi camping lake district, tipi hire lake district, Glamping lake district
However nationally keywords for the service have a lot higher traffic i.e. tipi hire or tipi camping, glamping
what keywords should be my target? and should I targeting my website for?
I don't want to target customers looking for these services outside of the lake district and also by targeting keywords without the term lake district means my competition is greater as i'm competing with the whole of the Uk for serivces It can't provide.
please advise
thanks

Hi Brooks
Thanks for your reply, yes helpful thanks.
Not sure if i made it clear above this is a clients website, they are based in the lake district and the operate from there. The scope of their primary customer would be as far reaching as the whole of the UK who would search for their service in the Lake District as well as local people searching for that service.
So local searches would I guess just use "tipi camping" and everybody else I'd hope would search for "lake District tipi camping "
When optimising the site content I guess I would need to target "Lake District Tipi camping" in the content and title tags etc. Presuming this would automatically take care of the local searches this way too. It was just the low volume traffic i was some what concerning.
I have also been focusing my efforts on ensuring a good local presence, citations, reviews google business etc.

Hello!
It's important to note that Google does its best to give users exactly what they're searching for, and is aware of searchers location (for the most part). So a search for the query "tipi camping" from the lake district – if Google sees the search as a locally intended search – the searcher will more than likely see local results, like yourself.
So for starters, I would ask how you've seen Google treat those keyword searches – when you search for the query "tipi camping" from the lake district, do you see local results, or more general knowledge and national results?
Within your Moz campaign, I would make sure you're tracking for both "tipi camping lake district" nationally, and also "tipi camping" locally for your service area. If you're optimized well locally, and Google interprets the keywords you're seeking to optimize for (like "tipi camping") as a search with local intent, you most definitely have a shot at beating out those bigger brands.
So I would say not to worry too much about that search volume or the national competition for said keywords, but to put more focus on local optimization, citations, a stellar Google My Business profile, etc...
Is that helpful at all? Make sense?

Keyword Ranking Fluctuations
Hi Guys I am currently working on a website where one of the keyword targets is fluctuating. The keyword is fluctuating between page 2 and page 5. What makes this strange is that we are not experiencing the issue with any other keyword targets. They are all ranking fine. It is only 1 keyword. The keyword target happens to be the main homepage keyword target - not sure if this makes a difference? The homepage targets 2 keyword e.g. Business Offices & Accessories. The homepage ranks perfectly fine for e.g. Business Accessories but is fluctuating for e.g. Business Offices! Very strange. What makes it even stranger - the keyword variations of the fluctuating keyword e.g. office for business - these variations are all fine and not fluctuating. Its only 1 keyword. If anyone has any ideas or feedback that would be great! Thanks, Duncan

Traffic impact from switching hosting.
Good Afternoon! Does anybody know what sort of impact I can expect to see from switching hosting? Not only that but how long it takes to come back from that sort of thing? Our website has steadily been dropping since I took it over about a month ago. I have been slowly, tediously trying to prune the bad stuff, and one of our issues is with out host. Any thoughts would be great! Thanks.

My organic traffic has died!! Why?
Hi there, I have recently updated this website, as in new design, new URL structure, the works. The old site before I introduced the new site was doing well, as in up and down around 2 000 visitors a day. The site sort of started to go a bit down the slightest bit just before we launched the new site on the same domain but nothing of any concern. We 301ed all the old URLs to their corresponding URL structure as to keep most of the link juice from the old site, however with the new site going live the begining of this month June 2014, till now the site has dropped off to just 200 per day. I have been searching high and low for an answer and have been comming up blank. Why could this have happened, what did I do incorrectly? www.zulu.org.za

Question about putting high traffic keywords in my Primary navigation menu.
Hello, I seem to be having a bit of a dilemma with making a crucial site architecture decision about which high traffic keyword I should put in my primary navigation menu. I am the owner of a computer repair business that I am currently re branding out of necessity for a few reasons. My existing business website has been established for the past 5 years now and I do all of the SEO and have been on the 1st Page of GOOGLE for anything computer repair related since day 1 however, like I said am re branding my company and migrating from Joomla to WordPress so it is a great time to make some positive and effective changes to my site architecture. I am going to be using the Silo Site Architecture on the new Site and I have a very firm working knowledge on the process but I seem to have hit a snag or dilemma with one of my Primary Navigation Categories for the Silo Theme. My specif question is this please.. Doing keyword research the Keyword Phrase "Computer Repair" is the most highly searched for keyword phrase for people that have computer related problems (naturally) and Ideally "Computer Repair" should be one of my Main Menu Navigation Silo Category Themes. But... here lies the problem.... If I go with "Computer Repair" in the (Main Nav Menu) then although it gets - 823,000 Local Monthly Searches I would be opening myself up to a potential problem because normally, most people associate the Phrase Computer Repair with Desktop Computer Repair. So in essence I would be forced to use an alternate other than "Computer Repair" for the Desktop Computer Repair structure in the Silo Theme (Sidebar Nav Menu). The Keyword Phrase "Desktop Repair" gets only - 12,100 Local Monthly Searches so basically no one uses the Search Phrase "Desktop Repair. when they are looking to get their computer repaired. I hope that I did not just confuse you? Still confused? Continue reading and I will dissect my psycho babble for you..... "The Semantic Historical Logic" Historically, a Desktop has always been referred to as a computer. Hence the reason why even still today, when our "Desktop" has problems and we need to get it fixed, we Search for "Computer Repair". Why is that? That's a very good question and here is "exactly" why. Long before we had Laptops, Netbooks, Tablets and Smart Phones we had the all encompassing and mighty "Computer" that allowed us to connect to the rest of the world. It was not until Laptops actually came about where there was a need to assign an actual _"Classification System"_and all mighty and powerful "Computer" became a "Desktop Computer**"!!! ** So, there you have it. This is the reason why "Computer Repair" is synonymous with "Desktop Repair" and why "NO ONE" searches for desktop repair when their Desktop Computer is broken! ============================================================= ACTUAL EXAMPLES WITH SCREEN SHOTS BELOW! If I go with Example A: I have the the Highest Traffic Keyword Phrase in my Mast Head (Main Nav Menu) but would be forced to use Desktop Repair to classify (Desktop Repair) in (Sidebar Nav Menu) instead using the keyword phrase "Computer Repair" to classify Desktop Repair. Example A: Main Nav Theme Category = "Computer Repair" = 823,000 Monthly Loc Child Pages/ Categories = -Desktop Repair = **12,100 ** Monthly Loc -Laptop Repair = 165,000 Monthly Loc -Tablet Repair = 165,000 Monthly Loc -Remote Desktop = 1,000,000 Monthly Loc I am using WordPress - (Pages / Child Pages) not Categories & Posts! So, as you can see from (Example A:) above, not being able to use the keyword phrase "Computer Repair" to classify the "Desktop Repair" section kind of opens me up for failure to a good extent as most of my business is done on regular desktop computers which people generally think "Computer Repair" when they are searching to have their Desktop Repaired. ============================================================= Example B: Main Nav Theme Category = **"Computer Service" = **246,000 Monthly Loc Child Pages/ Categories = -Computer Repair = 823,000 Monthly Loc -Laptop Repair = 165,000 Monthly Loc -Tablet Repair = 165,000 Monthly Loc -Remote Desktop = 1,000,000 Monthly Loc I am using WordPress - (Pages / Child Pages) not Categories & Posts! Now, with (Example B:) even though the keyword Phrase "Computer Service" is not the more favorable item to have as the Silo Theme Category in the Main Navigation Menu, we can see that it is much more favorable in terms of Local Monthly Searches over the just about non searched for phrase "Desktop Repair" So as you see, I have a bit of a dilemma that a more experienced SEO could counsel me on. The question is, through your experience, which scenario would you see as more favorable for the site Architecture example A: or example B: This brings me to my next question that also creates some confusion for me. If you say I think (Example B:) would be my better bet what would you recommend that I do with the URL Structure if "Computer Service" is the Parent Page for the Silo Theme? Example: I am using the /%category%/%postname%/ permalink structure for the Silo Site Architecture for the (Blog Section) only - and am using WP Pages and Child Pages for my Silo Content for my Services (Not Posts). Would this URL be a problem in Googles eyes or a customers eyes and be perceived as SPAMMY ... http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/computer-services/computer-repair/ More than likely, I would say yes because it looks that way to me! My question to you in regards to the link structure above is, If I take the "Computer Service" page and change the "SLUG" to (services) yes it will look better but... will that effectively work against me??? EDIT: ^^ Answered my own question on the Services deal directly above. ^^ Thank you for reading my very long winded questions but I am pretty detailed and I think that the better that I explained it the less writing and guessing what I meant would be better for all concerned (typing wise) Thank you very much and I look forward to your insightful expertise and wisdom. Keyword research with smart search suggestions?
I found a smart search suggestion plugin that looks amazing and thought I'd see if anyone has experience with it. www.suggest.io looks like a great usability improvement and even helps to do keyword research with what your visitors are searching on your site. I'm excited about it and feel like it is too good to be true. Does anyone have experience with this plugin or something similar?

UK Company Major drop in traffic & rankings on one primary keyword since March
I am helping out a small UK company who have had a sudden drop in organic search traffic since March 24th. Investigation highlights some issues with the site,e.g. Potential canonicalization of home page, a few html errors, some inbound links to the /index.html version of the homepage rather than /. But, nothing particualrly major and nothing that is different to pre-March 24th. The indexed pages looks ok in Google (although Bing is ranking the non-www version of the homepage) but this does not appear in Google's index. Searches for the company name on Google.co.uk show it as top result & some keywords are ranking reasonably well (based on homepage). Selecting blocks of text from the homepage and it ranks #1, but its Google rank for the primary keyword has gone from #2 pre-March 24th to not in the top 100 results since. SEOMOZ is grading the page A for the keyword which appears prominently on the page & keyword is the first characters of the title. It is not a particularly competitive keyword. Adding UK to the keyword and the page is Google.co.uk ranked #3. It's almost as if they are being penalised for a single keyword which I've never seen or heard of before. Any ideas? ** The company has never carried out any SEO - white hat or black hat. The site is perfectly normal, nothing dodgy or concerning about it at all.** Thanks in advance for your advice.

How to Target Keyword Permutations
I have a client that wants to rank for a keyword phrase that has many permutations.. ex. "Alaska Hill Country Resort", "Hill Country Resort Alaska", "Hill Country Alaska Resort" But I'm wondering if I should target these all on the same page or not. I'm assuming all of these permutations are actually valid searches because I did my keyword research for 'exact match' keywords and got results like this.. (let me know if I'm missing something here, or if this sounds right) [Alaska Hill Country Resort] - 230 Local Searches [Hill Country Resort Alaska] - 140 Local Searches [Hill Country Alaska Resort] - 30 Local Searches The phrase we're targeting is their main keyword phrase, so I've chosen their home-page as the page to rank for this phrase. My thought is to optimize for the most popular phrase (ex. "Alaska Hill Country Resort"), and sprinkle in the other phrases throughout the copy. Next I would run a link-building campaign targeting the main phrase first.. then the next phrase, and so on, so that my anchor text is more heavily focused on the more popular terms, but I would also make sure to include the less popular terms. Do you think this is the best way to go about this? Do I really need to make individual pages for each of the permutations, or is it okay to target them all on one page since they are essentially the same keyword?
