How much is too much?
-
I am aware that Google's Penguin 2.0 update is looking to tackle the increasing numbers of links from poor quality websites & blogs.
The advice since Penguin 1.0 has been to create a natural backlink profile, ensuring that there is a balance between keywords-rich anchor text and brand terms.
I tend to link using Branded anchor text to the homepage of my website and use keyword anchor text sparingly to link to subpages/categories elsewhere on my website.
My question is what exactly is too much in terms of anchor text? If for example I have 5 or 6 keyword-rich links inbound to a sub/category page, do I need to also get some brand anchor text into these sub/category pages too?

The best advice is, as you say, to be 'natural'. Hard to 'emulate' a natural backlink profile? - Then I hate to say it, but try to earn some natural backlinks
Add UGC to product pages (reviews etc), try to make product pages (assuming this is an eCommerce site!) more interesting (soem great stuff on MOZ about this - including a whiteboard Friday from a while back, I think!).
If you ARE 'building' links, I would recommend avoiding exact match anchors. In terms of what anchor text % to use for each type, and what would look natural, I very strongly suspect that this is different in each industry/niche. Google is pretty good at spotting what other websites any given site is 'related' to, and so would also be able to calculate what, on average, looks dodgy and what looks natural. I would be very surprised if this data didn't at least influence it's algorithm's a little.
Who ranks at the top in your industry? What sort of anchor text do they have pointing to similar sub-pages? - Check this for 3 or 4 top-ranking sites in your sector.
Link like a Journo or blogger
Consider using a mix of brand, url, and natural anchors such as in-sentence links (read a few New York Times blogs to see how they handle citation links (or follow the example i just made! hahaha). Whilst on the NYT blog, why not follow the links from the NYT blogs to their destination URL, and then run an OSE check on those URLs? That will likely show you other examples of natural linking
The long term goal should be to earn links, not build them - I accept this can be a tough call though!

You're stating "I tend to link using Branded ...", are these links internal or coming from external websites? If they are internal, there isn't anything to worry about. When you have actively 'build' those links from other websites, I would be more cautious with pages that you're giving keyword-rich links, and indeed mix it up a little.
What you would want most is to have a natural overall profile. Not necessary a perfect profiles for each page (which, ironically, would be unnatural), but a pattern that would look perfectly diverse, skewed and chaotic in all its natural perfection.

At What Point Are We Doing Too Much Link Building?
Hello Mozzers! This is a question that has been gnawing at the back of my mind as I learn more and more about link building. Historically, we have offered scaling package sizes with larger numbers of backlinks hand-built each month. We do this so our packages are very tangible for our clients. Our packages range from 15-100 backlinks each month. As I learn more about how to build links PROPERLY I am finding it next to impossible to keep up. I feel like we are definitely going the wrong direction in that regard. What are some of your thoughts on this? Thank you in advance for your valuable advice and support, Moz community!

How much 'ranking power' would a link from a privacy policy page of a Big Brand have if the site content is totally unrelated?
Let's say that Site A is a large brand with high authority ( Moz shows it at 90 DA). Site A is about “Blue Shoes”. Site B is about “fishing”. If Site A links from their privacy policy page to Site B … would that inbound link carry enough weight in a way that could impact rankings for Site B given that the content is totally unrelated and it's a link from a privacy policy? I’m asking if the work to get clients/partners do this help. I have a hypothetical question for you all! Site A is a large brand with high authority ( Moz shows it at 90 DA). How much should a link building program cost?
Hi All, I am relatively new to the world of SEO but it is vital to our business that we improve in this area. I believe our site architecture is good although we have a new site coming in the next few weeks which is effectively a re-skinning of the existing one that makes the user experience more relevant. What I would like to know is how much a link building program shoudl cost from an SEO provider and how they quantify what they charge - is there some kind of indicative cost per link or is it just "give us some money and we will do our best?" We have started writing daily articles on our news site and our natural listings are already pretty good. What I am looking to achieve is top three status for the London area (where we work) accross a broad range of keywords. I know this is what everyone wants but we are already front page and top 3 for many keywords and the back link building would appear to be where we are weaker compared to some of our competitors. Thanks James www.morganpryce.co.uk

Does focussing deep linking too much on one page have a negative impact elsewhere?
Hi, I'm just starting a backlinking campaign on a new website and am focussing on one deep page for client - focussing a lot of good quality backlinks on that one page. I'm aware that most of the other pages, including homepage, lack good backlinks. Can I go ahead and focus powerful backlinks on that one 'deep' page without a problem, or may that approach result in negative impacts on other pages' SERPs.

How much Link Building?
I'm wondering how much additional directory links to a site, on a monthly basis, would be too much, and potentially seen as too manufactured in Google's eyes. I am referring specifically to good quality, or relevant, directory links, nothing very spammy. I know there is no specific number, just wondering what the consensus is. Would a 10% monthly increase in linking root domains generally be considered too much? 5%? Thanks for your input!

Does PA matter much on blogs like tumblr, wordpress.com?
I've been exploring setting up pages on these type of sites. When searching for key words I've discovered the following... If a sites DA id let's say 83, the root domain you create is also an 83 (not 100% but most I've looked at) The PA starts at 1, but there seem to be a lot of these blog sites that rank for my key word searches even though the PA is a 1. So... I was wondering the value of attempting the get the PA of mine greater than one with back links. The blog page will link to the corresponding page on my main site. Is it worth the time, or PA in this case is not really much of a ranking factor in creating link juice? What I'm asking is that will a page on let's say joemastriano.blogspot.com/ (whatever) get more link juice to the page i link it to if the PA was 25 and not 1?
