Articles URL
-
Hello,
Currently, I am parsing article base on article ID on URL request. For example:
To go to the content of article **What is the visa on arrival? How to get it? **I am using URL like that http://www.vietnamvisacorp.com/news/what-is-the-visa-on-arrival--how-to-get-it--245.html and base on ID 245 to get this page content.
But, now I want to optimize this URL to http://www.vietnamvisacorp.com/news/what-is-the-visa-on-arrival--how-to-get-it.html. Then I got a problem: How to get an article without ID?Thanks,
-
Well, you need to build some rewrite rules for that to work, it doesn't go automatically to the file querying the DB.

Hello,
My google webmaster reported that this URL http://www.vietnamvisacorp.com/news/245/what-is-the-visa-on-arrival-how-to-get-it.html is NOT FOUND and link from http://moz.com/community/q/articles-urlHow to fix this problem? Thank you for any help!

While don't getting the page URL (which is the article title "what-is-the-visa-on-arrival-how-to-get-it.html" remove the .html and then add an extra field to the DB with a the URL friendly name, for this article, that field will contain "what-is-the-visa-on-arrival-how-to-get-it" then you search your DB for that field and you get the entry ID (of course, adding an index to that new column).
This one is a good solution for small DBs, but when scaling, you may want to use an integer to get the post ID instead, say "http://www.vietnamvisacorp.com/news/245/what-is-the-visa-on-arrival-how-to-get-it.html"
You get the ID plus the title and avoid any issue that may come if you accidentally post an article with the same title (you can have this prevented by looking into the DB before saving the article and if the title exists, you can either change the title or add something to differentiate them, say "-2".
Hope that helps!

Hi Matt,
Thanks for your contributions. I don't use WordPress. We developed out website with python and django framework. My problem here: I could not map one-to-one from URL /what-is-the-visa-on-arrival--how-to-get-it.html with that page content in database. Please give me advice!

Hi John,
This depends on what CMS you are using (if any). If you're using WordPress then you can do this pretty easily by using a search engine friendly URL permalink (which you can often get plugins for on most CMS's).
Let us know what platform you are working on and it will be easier to diagnose.
Matt

Changing Url structure to incorporate Woo Commerce
Advise needed please We have rankings coming along nicely with a website that uses page content but we now need to start online shopping with woo commerce The url structure has always been a bit of a mess, but its quite in depth We are looking to move small paragraphs about each product cat (formerly put on Pages) information into the Product Category and then the Product information into the product page and redirect the old urls to the new urls. It would mean updating the permalinks also - My concern if there is less leverage with product categories - do these rank just as well as pages, are we going to see our rankings change dramatically in doing so? Added to that - is it best doing this change gradually or all at once (like staging site to get the set up ready) and then pushing live

Does Google penalize you for reindexing multiple URLS?
Hello, Just a quick, question! I was wanting to know if multiple page indexing (site overhaul) could cause a drop in organic traffic ranking or be penalized by Google for submitting multiple pages at one time. Thanks

URL Structure on Category Pages
Hi, Currently, we having the following URL Structure o our product pages: All Products Pages: www.viatrading.com/wholesale/283/All_Products.html Category Page: www.viatrading.com/wholesale/4/Clothing.html Product Page: www.viatrading.com/wholesale/product/LOAD-HE-WOM/Assorted-High-End-Women-Clothing-Lots.html?cid=4 Since we are going to use another frontend system, we are thinking about re-working on this URL Structure, using something like this: All Products Pages: www.viatrading.com/wholesale-products/ Category Page: www.viatrading.com/wholesale-products/category/ Product Page: www.viatrading.com/wholesale-products/category/product-title/ I understand this is better for SEO and user experience. However, we already have good traffic on the current URL Structure. Should we use same left-side filters on Category Pages as in All Products Page? Since we are using Faceted Navigation, when users filter the Category (e.g. Clothing) they will see same page as Clothing Category Page. Is that an issue for Duplicate Content? Since we are a wholesale company - I understand is using "/wholesale/products/" in URL for all product pages a good idea? If so, should we avoid word "wholesale" in product-title to avoid repeated word in URL? For us, SKU in URL helps the company employees and maybe some clients identify the link. However, what do you think of using the SEO-friendly product-title, and 301 redirect it to www.viatrading.com/BRTA-LN-DISHRACKS/, so 1st link is only used by company members and Canonicalized 2nd is the only one seen by general public? Thank you,

Better to hyphenate URL or no?
Sea Glass Jewelry or Sea-Glass-Jewelry My domain name does not have my keyword in it, so I have been using the category as a means to get the keyword in the URL. My site would say www.abcdefghijk.com/sea-glass-jewelry/sterling-starfish-necklace When I run the review, it tells me that I have too many parameters. Is it too long? Should I remove hyphens? Which is better?

Canonical URLs and SEO
After publishing my new wordpress website my on page analysis shows two canonical urls on my homepage. In checking the source code the Yoast SEO plugin states my canoncial url is www.homepage.ca/ This is the only one showing. Having said this I do not add the trailing slash to anything on my url structure. Could this be why the on page analysis tool says there are 2? If so is there any way to resolve this?

Absolute vs relative urls
Hello, Should absolute or relative urls to be used for the internal links? I heard mixed opinions on that: One source claims that web crawlers prefer absolute urls as they are more understandable Other source points that there is no difference for web crawlers what urls are used and relative urls are shorter which reduces the size of a page. Which option is recommended? Many thanks Darius
