Forwarding kw rich domains to main domain
-
Hi
My client has a clutch of kw rich domains that want to point to main domain, apart from being good for promotional reasons is there any seo benefit for doing so (i know there used to be years ago but under impression hasn't been any benefit for a long while)
Most importantly though can any bad come from doing this ?
Best Rgds
Dan

If the domains have a good back link profile then it is always good to 301 redirect the KW Rich domains to the main domain but in my personal experience with one of the BIG website is that too many domains 301 redirecting to the main domain can hurt your rankings.. especially when they have a poor or no link profile.

Cool many thanks

It can harm you only if any of the kw rich domains have been previously penalized by Google, in which case 301 redirecting it will likely pass the penalty.
Otherwise, it's just like using the same tactic to redirect typo or vanity domains. Won't harm you, but it won't help you with ranking either, regardless of the domain name or keywords used.
Cheers!

Thanks Mihai
i thought microsites are well out the window these days, unless fully developing as a high quality site (which budget wont allow)
To confirm then, no bad can come from forwarding kw rich domains to main domain ?
cheers

Hey Dan,
301 redirecting those domains won't really help you SEO-wise unless they have a good backlink profile to begin with. Even then, it's better to build quality content on those sites, get some good backlinks and then link to your main domain (instead of redirecting). That's basically how brands use micro-sites to promote themselves (Wil Reynolds has a nice video on the advantages and disadvantages of using micro-sites).
Just a cautionary thing: Google has lowered the value of keyword rich EMD domains in September last year.
Hope this helps!

Old domain to new domain
Hi, A website on server A is no longer required. The owner has redirected some URLS of this website (via plugin) to his new website on server B -but not all URLS. So when I use COMMAND site:website A , I see a mixture of redirected URLS and not redirected URLS.Therefore two websites are still being indexed in some form and causing duplication. However, weirdly when I crawl with Screaming Frog I only see one URL which is 301 redirected to the new website. I would have thought I'd see lots of URLs which hadn't been redirected. How come it is different to using the site:command? Anyway, how do I move to the new website completely without the old one being indexed anymore. I thought I knew this but have read so many blogs I've confused myself! Should I: Redirect all URLS via the HTACESS file on old website on server A? There are lots of pages indexed so a lot of URLs. What if I miss some? or Point the old domain via DNS to server B and do the redirects in website B HTaccess file? This seems more sensible but does this method still retain the website rankings? Thanks for any help

Value of domain name for domain authority. Please help to figure out!
I am doing SEO for an appliance repair company. Their company website's domain doesn't have high authority, and I am going to increase that by link earning and content improving. I think a better domain name might also help me out. The current URL contain the word "appliance" but doesn't have "repair" in it. I am thinking a new domain that would contain both keywords will serve better. Could you please share with me your thought on this? Am I in the right direction, or not at all? I know Google penalizes mirror sites since this they are considered as duplicated content. I'll upload my content to the new domain and make the old one point to that new URL. I am wondering if canonical might help? Or 301 redirect will be a better solution? Any advise would be highly appreciated! Thank you!

How to delete video rich snippets?
Hi mozzaholics, At first I was very happy to have video snippets appear in Google (200 pages), but now after 6 months I see a drop of almost -30% in traffic, whilst the average rank stayed the same, compared to the star snippets I have for other pages. So I want to remove the video snippets and have the old rich snippets back. I tried removing the videositemap and google's the structured data tool doesn't show video snippets. Does anybody know what else I can do to remove the video snippets? Is there anybody who succeeded deleting them? Please share your wisdom. Ivo

Forward DNS Please HEEEELLLLPPPPPPP!!!
Sorry if I'm asking a rookie question here, I'm a hobbyist not a pro. I purchased a domain from Dodaddy and it's hosted on Network Solutions. We are now adding a shopping cart and need to create the subdomain shop.mydomain.com and forward the DNS to Volusion. I assumed this is done at Godaddy, where I purchased the domain. I called and they told me that Network Solutions needs to do it. I called NS and they told me GD had to do it. I called GD again hoping to get a different answer, but NOPE... guess what??? "everyone knows that it's done by whoever is hosting the site." UUUUGGGG So PLEASE let me know WHO has this responsibility???? Hopefully everyone has a common answer. 🙂 I still believe it's done at GD. Thanks Everyone

TLD as part of word in domain name?
What is best practice regarding domain names? Assuming I would target the keyword "example" examp.le or example.com I guess the latter is preferable, what could be the issues with the first option? /Lars Eriksson

Checkout on different domain
Is it a bad SEO move to have a your checkout process on a separate domain instead of the main domain for a ecommerce site. There is no real content on the checkout pages and they are completely new pages that are not indexed in the search engines. Do to the backend architecture it is impossibe for us to have them on the same domain. An example is this page: http://www.printingforless.com/2/Brochure-Printing.html One option we've discussed to not pass page rank on to the checkout domain by iFraming all of the links to the checkout domain. We could also move the checkout process to a subdomain instead of a new domain. Please ignore the concerns with visitors security and conversion rate. Thanks!

Sub domain versus sub directory
Hey all, Has Google finally grown up to treat sub-domains as they would sub directory? i.e: http://blog.example.com as opposed to http://example.com/blog I desperately wanted example.com/blog but we were forced to launch with blog.example.com because of WordPress limitations and our DNS and load balancing set up on our end. All searches lead me to old documentation 2010 and earlier. Wondering if anyone has any up to date information around this. Cheers, Croozie,
