What are you doing differently after Carousel?
-
Especially Restaurant and Hospitality marketers, have you changed your SEO or (as in my case much of my) overall online strategy for your Hospitality Clients after Carousel?
Carousel's functionality as a SERP is so different that it does seem to have larger implications for businesses that will be presented in this SERP format. Now rather than one click to a client's website where you have much more control over the experience, Carousel will create more clicking and comparison shopping within the SERP. Clicking on a Thumbnail in Carousel doesn't click through to the business' website, instead it now returns a new SERP with a search phrase on the business name.
As a result, things like online ratings sites (Yelp, Urbanspoon, etc) are much more relevant to the client's overall digital presence. Hence in many cases the need on the part of clients for more digital marketing services.
And while on first blush, it appear to potentially be a negative for SEO and a boon to other disciplines, I am currently of the belief that this raises the stakes for SEO for restaurants in competitive markets immeasurably. All of the Carousel SERPs that I've seen have been limited to two panels of horizontal thumbnails. If your restaurant doesn't appear in those results, you're much less likely to have online traffic turn into real world traffic. Interested to hear the input of the community, especially those that specialize in Hospitality Marketing.

Hi John,
While I don't own a hotel or restaurant or other entertainment-oriented business, I have been working in Local SEO since the mid-2000s. While I'm not sure that it's necessary to do anything 'different', I do think the carousel may prompt Local business owners and Local SEOs to do some things better. Namely:
-
You have got to be on top of your citation sources. Because clicking on a business in the carousel now brings up a big list of citations in the SERPs, reputation management has just been pointed up as more important than ever. Crummy reviews on your Yelp profile or bad NAP data on your Yahoo! Local profile are going to have a greater impact on any user who actually scrolls around through that page of branded SERPs. Keeping your citations up to date, responding positively to negative reviews and working hard to earn good reviews simply matter more than ever now for carousel-included businesses.

Images matter more than ever now. There was a completely awesome forum post about how to control which image appears for your business. Go to: http://localsearchforum.catalystemarketing.com/local-search/8819-case-study-images-businesses-carousel-local-results.html The author's test was relatively small, but his order of operations for getting a preferred image to appear in the carousel make sense to me. I'll quote here:
"The whole point of this is to inform you that; you have control over the images that show on the new results. Here is a quick breakdown of what Google is looking for.
1. Listing verified and managed in Google Places (This is the easiest method of control)
2. Gathers User Photos for unverified listing
3. Uses Citation Sources as a last resort for photos.
4. Adds a map image when nothing else can be found."
At the same time, actually choosing which image will make you stand out in the lineup matters a lot now, too. Mike Blumenthal touches on this in this piece (http://localu.org/blog/google-introduces-new-carousel-display-for-local-results/) but I have yet to see a real study of tactics that make an image stand out. For example, is it better to have a closeup of food or an image of your building as your main photo? What about the use of color? Does using red make your image pop? Etc. This is deserved of experimentation, for sure.
3. Where you're at in the carousel lineup matters, based on early heatmap studies. Mike Ramsey wrote a good piece on this and a study of the heatmap is helpful in understanding this:
http://localu.org/blog/a-heat-map-click-study-for-googles-local-carousel-results/
- Expect change. Google is experimenting with this right now. Just this week, I was discussing with a member here at Moz the fact that some people are seeing a toggle button in the carousel that is totally absent for other people. This kind of behavior is indicative of testing. And, the whole thing with the Zagat-based ratings is in flux right now, too. So, the carousel we are seeing in mid-July may be quite different from the one we're seeing in December later this year.
Overall, I don't really see the carousel as a game changer. I see it as incentive to continue to do better at the core work of Local SEO. Having a violation-free Google+ Local page, building strong, clean citations, earning diverse reviews, managing your reputation, etc.
I hope others will contribute to this important topic John has brought up!

Desk top rankings differ from mobile rankings
Hi there! We are working on clients site for SEO. We have noticed that our clients 'desk top search results' on Google differ from the 'mobile / tablet search results'. For the desktop - the client is in the top 4 results of page one for Google, but for mobile / tablet results they are at the bottom of page one. We converted the clients site to be responsive 6 months ago. We have been through Google webmaster tools and made all suggested alterations. All programming is to a high standard. Competitors all seem to keep their current rankings - whilst our clients seem to drop. Any suggestions what the issue is would be very much appreciated 🙂 Thanks in advance. Phil. . We re-built their website so that it was responsive. We have been But -

Why are Google Webmaster Tools' Google rankings different to actual Google rankings?
Dear Moz, We have noticed that according to Google Webmaster Tools one of our client sites is ranking very prominently for some of the major key phrases that we are trying to rank them for. However, when we perform a Google search for these queries, our client's content is nowhere to be seen, not even on the 5th page (we logged out of the Google account before performing the test). A long-term manual spam action on our client's site was recently lifted by Google - is it possible that Google Webmaster Tools is providing data about our client's estimated Google rankings, without taking into consideration the penalty of the manual spam action which was taken? Thanks

Content vs articles vs blogs is there a difference?
I was wondering is there really a difference between website content, articles or blogs and most important do search engines see it differently? My website is pretty much an ecommerce site and most of my long text is on my blog. The only other pages that have much content is the homepage, all the other pages may have a paragraph. I am just wondering if i need to make more actual pages with text/content or is having my blogs good enough? I am no expert in seo and just wondering if i am wasting too much money on getting blogs written or should i get more content. Content being a page called commercial printing and blog being a page called why do do i need commercial printing? Also would it matter to the users who find the site? Would the users come to my site just looking for information or would they actually think of me for the service?

Difference between Google's link: operator and GWT's links to your sites
I haven't used the Google operator link: for a while, and I noticed that there is a big disparity between the operator "link:" and the GWT's links to your site. I compared these results on a number of websites, my own and competitors, and the difference seem to be the same across the board. Has Google made a recent change with how they display link results via the operator? Could this be an indication that they are clean out backlinks?

Same page but appearing in Google with different titles
I have a page ranking on position 1 for a key phrase. The key phrase is the title of the page as well. I'll use a mock key phrase to aid my question - "Teeth and Gums" So the page is ranking number 1 for "Teeth and Gums" and "Teeth and Gums" is the meta title. However, I went ahead and did a new search adding an additional keyword to the original search. When I did a new search adding an additional keyword to the original search, Google has done something weird.. Let's say the search is "Dentistry - Teeth and Gums", Google has ranked my page again as number 1 but changed the title. The title in the search result is now "Dentistry - Teeth and Gums" How and why? It's kinda like Google PPC's keyword insertion but the title hasn't got anything weird like {KeyWord: Dentistry}. It's just "Teeth and Gums" Has this happened to you guys? Any ideas?

Why am I getting different Google SERP result for same keywords?
Hi Mozzers, I have noticed recently that Google (.com.au) has been serving up different SERP results for the same keywords. For example, one of our main keywords is "Car Loan". One result will show our site as ranking #5 organically from 242,000,000 results. A refresh of this search will then result in our site not ranking at all from 133,000,000 results. We have been noticing this happen only in the last few days & more frustrating is that Google is throwing up the SERP from 133,000,000 results more frequently. Would anyone know why this is occurring? And what can we do, if anything, to ensure we are shown regardless of how many results Google calls from? Is it from recent algo update & will it settle down over time? Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Just to add - I'm not gogged in to Google when completing this test & regularly clear cookies etc so I don't believe its a personalised search issue)

What are the differences between Google SEO and Bing SEO?
I came across this question on why the poster's rankings in Bing/Yahoo were so much lower than his rankings in Google. One of the links responded with was a presentation Rand gave about the difference in ranking elements of Google and Bing. My purpose for looking into this is to boost rankings in Bing to be more in line with my Google rankings. My takeaways from Rand's presentation were that Bing likes shorter URLs than Google and it's better to have more links from more root domains with more precise anchor text. Unfortunately this presentation was given at last year's SMX Advanced and is almost a year old. Since then Microsoft has been accused of basically scraping the Google SERPs and Google unleashed at least two maybe three rabid Pandas. Needless to say the environment has changed. So my question is for those people who are happy with how they rank in Bing: What SEO factors are you seeing make a bigger impact in Bing vs. how they impact your Google rankings?
