What now?
-
Hi all
What now for optimization projects.
this is what I gathered so far with all the changes in the SEO world.
No
- Stop guest blogging activity!
- no need to stress about directory submission.
Yes - create great internal content that engage clients. this jmy problem.
Great content OK and what can I do with it to get people engaged. Slogans are not action items.
What engagement are beneficial to sites? like and +1 from within the site?
sponsors posts on FB and how do they help website?
We as agencies and consultant need action items and measurable activities. I like the changes however so far I do not know why or what?
Many more Questions for later.

Guest blogging as an activity isn't frowned on. Guest building as a way to manipulate link authority (or in fact anything as a way to manipulate link authority) is. In that video Cutts says this in the first sentance "Guest blogging for links"
Like most things in SEO it is how you do it. If I write some quality pieces for well respected blogs and these include followed links to my sites (as do many other types of sites / pages of varying types) that is very unlikely to ever cause a problem. That is very different to having a strategy that involves large amounts of guest posts on sites of questionable value with a high proportion of guest posts and I have little else of more weight to back up my link profile.
I really think the "black hat / white hat" metaphor doesn't help people with SEO. In truth there is a LOT of grey - it's almost all just shades of grey. Most methods lose their shiny whiteness if you try to scale them up - particularly if you dumb them down at the same time. Most "frowned on" methods can still be used very effectively if you are selective and intelligent in your link building and keep focused on quality over quantity.
Don't believe me? Start another question here on moz.com and ask "If the Huffington post (#1 blog in the world according to Technorati) asked you to write an article about something you are passionate about and said you could have a follow link in it, would you use that link?" . I don't know many professional SEOs that would say no.

Hey Guy,
I'm not sure why you are thinking about stopping guest blogging activities. I believe guest blogging is still a great way to achieve greater brand exposure and obtain backlinks from authoritative sites within your niche.
Granted, Google has mentioned before that links in guest posts should be "nofollow"ed. If you are guest blogging in massive amounts for the sake of link building, then sure, you better nofollow your links. But if you write quality content of decent lengths, I don't see why Google will penalise you for linking back to your site.

thanks for the prompt reply.
I agree that the changes are great and creativity is part of our work now, which is cool.
Technical SEO is straight forward and we have some great tools at our hands however when it comes to actionable things to do to get those important links are very unclear.
I am checking many social options but there is a clutter of tools there.
again I am in a place where what to do is crystal clear and the how is still very blurry.

I think that the changes over the last 18/2 years months make things more interesting for agencies. There is just a bit more challenge in explaining the work to clients.
Technical SEO seems to have become more important again. It seems to now be pretty easy to hobble your own website through bad on-site practices and likewise to get an advantage through good ones (like schema). Now that we have (mostly) more useful webmaster tools at our disposal the emphasis seems to be on the site to either get this stuff right or suffer the consequence. That is definitely an area where the skills than an agency can offer can really bring value.
Link "building" might be out of favour, but links are as important as ever. That then means someone with the skills and knowledge to conceive the ways to do that, identify opportunities, conceive content, produce that content and then do the work needed to get that content noticed.
Wrap all that up with a strategic view that many companies don't have the digital skills to pull off and I think that there is more scope than ever for good agencies.

The "Fetch As Google" limit has been decreased - what now?
Since Google decreased the "Fetch As Google" limit to ten pages per day, we've been a bit stuck. We're publishing 20-30 content pages per day, targeting a huge range of search queries. Circa 40% of our traffic comes to us through these pages. Since we're now heavily restricted on submitting these to Google, who's got other ideas to get the pages picked up quickly? I'm slightly concerned because although the pages link outwards to other areas of the website, no other areas of the site link to these pages. They're purely top-of-the-funnel. We can't be the only people with this concern. How would you address it?

Grabbed up some branded domains now what
With the recent release of gtlds I was waiting to pick up a .clothing for a client. For some strange reason something came over me and I ended up buying 10 domains of brandname.clothing domains of well know brands. I'm no cybersquatter but just an aspiring SEO and sell these brand's clothing products online. As I learn more about the legal issues I'm wondering what to do .Do I cancel domains with godaddy? Will I be refunded? Do I contact rightful owner and offer them the domain at cost? Can I create a fan site of the products and sell advertising as I seen on many occasions? So confused what to do?

Now that Google is no longer publicly displaying Page Rank updates, how will this effect Moz's ability to calculate DA and PA?
Hi, How much more important do you guys think that Moz's Page Authority and Domain Authority metrics are going to become now that Google has stopped giving people public access to a site or pages Page Rank? And how accurate is PA and DA as a measurement in comparison to Page Rank..so for example if I was seeking a guestposting opportunity and saw a site as having a PR of 4....if I now looked to Moz's Page and Domain Authority metrics instead...would that still give me equivalent information on the strength of that domain and thus make a judgement on whether it will be a worthy site for a guestpost.. I guess what I am asking is, how close is now looking at Moz's metrics (ie. a third party company) to the info on PageRank that was being updated by Google themselves? Also will the lack of updated public PR info from Google effect the ability for Moz to calculate PA and DA?? Look forward to your replies on this,

What are other SEO's calling themselves now?
I am piggy backing off of Rand's latest Whiteboard Friday: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/why-we-cant-just-be-seos-anymore-whiteboard-friday (It is an awesome post if you haven't checked it out yet.) I just want to hear some feedback from other industry professionals. Have you started defining/communicating your business as more than just, I do SEO? If so, what are you calling yourselves now and why? How has that been working out for you?

Google: 7 Results on First page now (Good or Bad)?
Hi, So what are your thoughts on only 7 results on the first page of a search? Looks like its only in play for brands at the moment with increased sitelinks for the first result. I actually really like it, looks a lot better and its easier to take the overall information in on the page. I hope they role this out onto more generic terms as well. Should mean a higher CTR for those who have 'made it' to the first page. I suppose Google will pickup on a higher CTR on the ads well.

My site was hit by the Penguin Update, Now What?
My site is very young, having only been up for about a month and a half. Despite being nascent we were seeing a ton of organic traffic. Enter Google Penguin update.... Traffic is down 40% or so over the past week. So, assuming the damage has been done, the question is, what do we do next to start moving back towards where we were? If we're doing everything everything right do we just chalk it up to the fact that our site is very new and stay the course on original content and link building? I know you can submit your site for reconsideration which is something that we are going to do this week, but I wonder what else we can do to start edging back to where we were pre-penguin update. Maybe this would be a good Whiteboard Friday topic.

12-pack Now a 6-pack?
Google just announced the new 12-pack site-links 2 weeks ago, and now it looks like they're testing some changes that restrict it to a 6-pack. Are others seeing this? Has anyone seen an official report (Google blogs or major search site)? Is this an homage to beer or abs?

Is Bing actually using Yahoo's search engine now?
All my Bing rankings are now the same as Yahoo's ranking were, but I expected the opposite. Meanwhile, my Yahoo rankings are exactly the same as they were last week.
