How to diagnose and improve a high bounce rate?

Under Google Analytics, I can see a bunch of quite useful information.
One of the most alarming things is the excessively high Bounce Rate. It is 60%. That means, 60% of the visitors to my website (ecommerce site that sells equestrian gear and apparel) are leaving without clicking on any other links.
I would highly appreciate it if someone can provide guidance on how to
1. Diagnose this issue, i.e. understand why the visitors are leaving.2. Fix the issues found.

Bounce rate is determined by a wide variety of factors.... the quality of your traffic, the attractiveness of your site, the speed with which it loads, the quality of merchandise, the variety of merchandise, many other things. The software measuring the bounce rate can also be a factor because different programs calculate bounce rate in different ways.
I work on two retail sites in very different niches (one hobby supplies and one close to the office supplies niche). In the past month they had bounce rates of 22% (average 3 pageviews per visit) and 23% (average 3.5 pageviews per visit).
These are just observations of how your site differs from mine...
Home page... You have 12 CATEGORIES displayed with a lot of wasted space... the 12 categories is close to duplicating your top navigation. We have about 12 categories like you and they are all shown as a large image and sentence on the homepage but we also include lots of individual, best-selling items and new stuff. You have about 180 pixels of empty space on the right.... We have a 300 wide column on the right that is completely dedicated to informative content. Nothing for sale in that column, just links to articles about how to use the products, how to selection them, videos of product use.
Lots of people come into the site and go straight to the free information. This free information is our credibility and it does really well in the search results. Lots of people enter these free information pages and then purchase the items that we explained how to use or how to select. These free info pages attract links, likes, shares, email referrals. In my opinion they drive the rankings of the website.
Category/Product Pages... As an example... http://www.vrtack.com/riding-apparel-c-34.html ... This page does not render well for me... The top row of three items comes in fine but the second row only has one item. If a person has a tablet or a small monitor they will see four items and think that is all you have. Also some of the photos have been resized impropery - stretched or scrunched. This looks very unprofessional - especially if you are selling clothing! If you want people to click through or buy something get fantastic images on the site.
We really value high quality photos. We invested in a very good camera, professional lights, light box, etc. to have the equipment. I have also allowed my webmaster to spend lots of time experimenting to get great shots of each item. Over time his images have become better and better and the amount of time required for each has dropped. He spends 10% to 20% of his time taking photos to improve over what manufacturers provide or photos that illustrate fine details about the product and how they are used or compared. I don't sweat labor hours spent on images. Never. In my opinion, kickass photos are one of the most important characteristics of a retail site.
On your product pages you have a 300x300 image on the left side. I would allow that to be 300 wide and an unlimited height. Lots of your clothing products would present better there if a taller image were allowed. Where you have multiple images of a product, I would show ALL of them in on that left side at full resolution. Bandwidth is cheap, visual impact is priceless.
I see that you have some links going out to wikipedia. If this was my site I would be monitoring how many people use those links and writing custom content for my own site to receive the traffic from those links. Each of those pages will have related sales items on them, they will pull traffic from search and they will be customized to make the exact point that I want to make.
Some of your product descriptions are quite short and are used verbatim on other websites. I would spend the time needed to beef them up, make them unique, and include links in them to informative content about that product cateogry that I would create for on my own site.
I see that you have visibility in Google for quite a few of your products. Nice work. Improving the content and making it more substantive could improve your rankings, pull in longer tail keywords and make visitors regard your site and your staff as an "expert" place to buy.

The site looks quite old and dated.
What do your competitors sites look like? Chances are they would be looking at various sites, and may instantly compare you to some of the new sites, and click the back button. There are some amazing wordpress themes now with Woocommerce integration, which even if you DIY the website would look alot better, so if you have a little knowledge you can get a site relatively easily.
If you budget or skills do not permit a new site, work on some of the little things. Get a smarter \ crispier logo, add more features \ articles etc. Try to get more engagement, more help pages, blog etc. Adjust the padding on the product descriptions so they don't line up against the borders etc.

1. I would first try and see why the users came to the site in the first place.
Where are your users coming from?
Are they looking for products or information?
Are they actually interested in buying anything?
Can they find your products elsewhere on a more reliable site?2. Fix any broken images and work on building trust:

Build trust by including things like your shop address. Clean up the logo and make it a clean crisp image. Encourage your existing customer base to interact with the site, then build on to the site to improve ways for customers to interact. Customer reviews, testimonials, or just an image of your shop location so they feel like they're buying it from the real world.
The Internet is a competitive area where many retailers can sell the same products and services as other retailers. The only way to succeed over the long term is to make your product and website more targeted for a specific niche (making you the authority on the subject), or offer something unique that your competitors don't. People can shop anywhere. The main question will be why would someone want to buy something off your site and not someone elses?

Thinking about redesigning site to reduce bounce rate - have a couple of questions
BACKGROUND Im looking at redesigning the website for a creative consultancy to improve the user experience. The website is mainly an image portfolio along with “press”, “our services”, “about us”, “contact” pages. I originally designed the website a few years ago and when we did, we wanted to make the image portfolio the most important feature. So we made it a full screen JS image slider with lazy loading of images, so that there are about 40 full screen images on the homepage that rotate. From a users point of view i still feel this is the best system as it very quickly allows them to browse the portfolio, which we looking for a creative consultancy is their UPS (unique selling point). The site has a very strong backlink profile compared to its competitors in the SERPS it has about 20-25% increase in PA and DA. But our site has been slipping down the rankings in recent years / months. From spot 1-2 to about spot 5-7. MY HYPOTHESIS I think that the reason the site may be dropping back in the SERP is that although its a very usable site, all its portfolio information is “too easy to find / view” and results in a user coming to our site, seeing everything they need to see, then bouncing back to the SERP. Our site has a bounce rate of 40-60%. Where as on competitors sites, their “portfolio” is a separate page off the homepage, so a users has to click through to a separate page, and even if they don't like the design content of the portfolio it doesn't get logged as a bounce. MY QUESTION Does bounce rate affect SERP ranking ? Could the sites SERP performance be improved by redesigning the site to put the portfolio on a separate page so a user would have to click through to it, if that would get the bounce rate down, would the site see a benefit even if people still clicked back to the SERP results eventually after seeing our portfolio, even though it wasn't a true 1 page bounce ? Dose time on site affect SERP ranking ? Is there a way i can see a competitor's bounce rate ? Would welcome any other thoughts inputs on this matter.

Correlation of PageSpeed Insights and YSLow scores to high rankings in SERPs
I'm pretty well rounded when it comes to SEO, but I'm just frazzled when it comes to YSlow and PageSpeed Insights. Of course, individual factors are important to site performance, but it has become increasingly difficult to recommend open-source and hosted platforms that don't pass muster on many of the performance standards being tested. For example, entity tags, expires headers, and cookie-free domains are nearly impossible to set with hosted platforms, and none of the major open-source CMS like WordPress, Joomla, Magento, Odoo, etc., consistently put javascript at the bottom or make "fewer" HTTP requests. Mobile is now king, so quite a few people (including myself) need to "mobilize" their website by late April or risk dropping in mobile search rankings. Nearly all my clients run multi-lingual e-commerce websites, so that really limits options but makes it that much more important to keep current with Google's SEO recommendations. What platforms perform best taking into account any correlation with YSlow scores/PageSpeed Insights to high floating sites on SERPs? Would one spend the money to "fix" their current platform that has worked very well to date or switch to a mobile-ready platform?

What To Do When Improved Site Speed & Layout Result In Higher Bounce Rates & Lower Time On Site
We launched a new Bootstrap 3.0 site template 2 weeks ago. The site loads 5x faster and has a much improved layout (utilizing most common above the fold recommendations ). It's only been two weeks, but our bounce rate has increased 5-10% and our avg time on site decreased by 10-18%. We had anticipated a drastic improvement, not mild downturn in user behavior. I'm hopeful that the Analytics metrics aren't showing the true picture on the keywords we care about (can't see anymore due to "Not Provided" listed as most keywords now. Argh!) and perhaps some of the more important/accurate user behavior metrics that we can't see are improving. We know our industry and our clients needs VERY well. We THOUGHT our new content/layout was perfect so it will be tough for us to try to make improvements at this point. We believe our best plan of action now is to add more content on each page and A/B test it along with other subtle changes. The problem is that our new content is very concise and hits on all of the primary visitor intentions, so additions of content could be redundant and making concise answers more "fluffy", which is what we tried to get away from. What do you think? Is there reason for panic? What would your plan of attack be if your "sure shot" new design didn't provide the improvements you "knew" it would? 🙂

SEO Value to Improving HTML Code of Website That Validates According to W3C?
Greetings MOZ Community: My real estate website www.nyc-officespace-leader.com, originally designed in Drupal, was relaunched using Wordpress in 2013. The code for all URLs validates. The relaunch was performed by developers in Argentina. As part of an SEO campaign, I very reputable design/coding company in the has provided new wire frames to correct useability issues holding back conversions. In the course of the design adjustments they inspected the code and have told me that it is inefficient, that a number of shortcuts were taken and that the code does not conform to Wordpress best practices. What concerns me most is their claim that the quality of coding makes it more difficult for Google to index the site and this may be detrimental to ranking. Is it possible for the original developers to clean up this code if the deficiencies are pointed out to them? Or once coding shortcuts are taken are they impossible to fix? Would it make sense for me to request that the new design team put together a list of HTML deficiencies and provide to the original developers and ask them to correct? I am spending tens of thousands of dollars on content optimization, content marketing. It would be absurd if these coding issues would ultimately prevent improvement in ranking and traffic. At the same time, I hate to be a cynic but the domestic design/coding firm, while being very professional, does have an incentive in getting me to ditch the original design so I commit to an costly rebranding. If these issues are really minor maybe it is not worth making the effort to clean up the code (assuming that is even possible) and focus the budget on content marketing. Any thoughts?

How can we improve our e-commerce site architecture to help best preserve Page Authority?
Today I installed the SEOMoz toolbar for Firefox (very cool, highly recommended). I was comparing our site http://www.ccisolutions.com to this competitor: http://www.uniquesquared.com For the most part, the deeper I go in our site the more the page authority drops. We have a few exceptions where the page authority of a subcategory page is actually better than the cat. page one level up. In comparison, when I was looking at http://www.uniquesquared.com I noticed that their page authority stays at "21" on every single category page I visit. Are you seeing what I'm seeing? Is this potentially a problem with the tool bar or, is there something significantly different about their site architecture that allows them to maintain that PA across all category and sub category pages? Is there something fundamentally wrong with our (http://www.ccisolutions.com) site architecture? I understand that we have longer URLs, but this is an old store with a lot of SKUs, so we have decided not to remove the /category/ and /product/ from the URLs because the 301 redirects that would result wouldn't pass all of the authority they've built up over the years. Interested to know viewpoints on the site architecture and how it might be improved. Thanks!

Hom much does getting a mobile website improve the "mobile ranking"?
There's been speculation about Google totally not ranking sites that are not mobile, but as far as I can see many sites rank THE SAME on mobile devices as on regular stationary PCs/lap-tops. I had hoped for a radically improved ranking once a mobile site was built. Or is it just that it takes a TON of time for it to go through and then it gets better or is it like with regular sites that a new mobile site on a sub-domain is parked in some form of mobile-sand-box? Also, does putting a mobile site on a ranking domain, as subdomain help, e.g. m.testingsite.com instead of testingsite.mobi ? Thanks.

What is a really great bounce rate for a product or service site? What does Good look like?
I am really curious about a result I have never seen before. Our bounce rate went down a lot on a new site. So, what is good??? Recently, we took on a project with a company that offers a product they install for consumers and who had been in business for 15 plus years. The company is successful, has good customer base of those who have been made very happy, etc. It is not a repeat sale type of product, etc. One and done. Their site when we began talking was roughly a year old and was not well constructed but not terrible. Most of the issues were around I frames, use of older coding, poor SEO, etc. There was not really a way to "redesign" and we built a new site. This became a true collaboration in a B2B environment as the owner pushed us like crazy. Not the bad kind of push, the one that makes you say to your team, "Let's find a way!" The result, IMO, was a gorgeous site. But, as you know, those are a dime a dozen. But, to get to the point, when we took over the account they had a bounce rate of around 45%. I did not see this as either good or bad, but a fact and for this industry probably not bad at all. In all honesty, I was not looking at that as a first metric I wanted to move, but it was obviously at or near the top for all the reasons we know. So, this site is a local business, not an everyday product and gets about 2500 to 3000 uniques per month. If we compare to May of 2011/2012: 2011 2012 Total Visitors 1852 3,298 Uniques 1609 2,740 Pageviews 5,634 23,203 Pages/visit 3.04 7.04 Avg Duration 2.05 3.20 Yes, I am leaving off what we are getting, yes, I am leaving off the site. Please don't hate me. I am really wanting to see what others see with site changes and bounce rates first and will disclose. So, what's a great bounce rate? How do you know?
