Just identified and reversed a severe footer links penalty - any similar experiences out there?
-
Just seen my first rather dramatic sitewide footer links penalty. Virtually all organic search traffic fell off site for 3 months. The footer links were a mix of keyphrases targeted at internal pages and keyphrases targeted at a handful of other associated companies (a group of enterprises owned by same businessman, with websites hosted in the same place). The website developers felt they were improving search engine visibility.
Anyway, as soon as I started work with this client I requested immediate removal of the footer links and traffic immediately recovered to pre-penalty levels (within a couple of days).
Have any of you experienced anything similar?

It's all been corrected now. In link above, it gives you an exact example of how travel sites have been typically using footer links, and how they have been hit. I'd say my client was a carbon copy. A travel site with keyword rich footers - a few of which pointed externally - most of which pointed at internal pages.

Hey Luke,
I checked a couple of sites that rank on page one and have footers everything seems sound towards my end. Can you give me the link of the site so I can have a quick look on the link profile and the footers? Will be more than happy to.
Regards

Site appears to have been hit like other sites mentioned here (the site I refer to above is a travel site): http://moz.com/blog/smarter-internal-linking-whiteboard-friday

Hi Yiannis - yes, I suspect the footer links pointing to external sites were the issue here - the footer links had been in place for a number of years, apparently. This was definitely a penalty - the traffic fell off a cliff, and then climbed a cliff on removal.
Some agencies I work with tell me internal footers are not a problem but then the very same SEO people said the same about their optimized title tags in the not too distant past. Keyword targetted footer tags, put there for Googlebot rather than humans, are a no no in my book.

Hi Luke,
I have used footer links a lot and I have never ever experienced a penalty. However there are a couple of things you need to be aware which might resulted in your ranking drops / re-recover.
1) footer links are bad for SEO when linking to other sites or when other sites link to you. There is no harm if you link to your internal pages/landing pages and besides search engines tend to ignore footer links
2) Your main page is the page with most domain authority. The more footer links you add the more link juice you pass to those pages. If you added too many you might over-dilute the home page link juice meaning an overall drop in rankings.
3) You have to remember that only the first link on the page to a specific URL is counted. So if for example you have on the main menu or content a link to product X as "product X" anchor and then you have on the footer a link "best product X 2013" with both links to the same product x page then google will ignore completely the latter as it's worthless. In your case it is possible that you had many footers and passed all the juice to lets say 10 pages meaning no juice thus downrank vs pages with higher authority.
Just a guess, hope it helps!

If I use links intag instead of "ahref" tag can Google read links inside div tag?
Hi All, Need a suggestion on it. For buttons, I am using links in tag instead of "ahref". Do you know that can Google read links inside "div" tag? Does it pass rank juice? It will be great if you can provide any reference if possible.

Breadcrumbs or contextual links ?
Hi, I have breadcrumbs on my site but wondering if in addition to those I should also add contextual links linking to the same pages ? Or is it necessary to duplicate ? The reason i would be doing this is because contextual links/ editorial is what google likes and I am not sure breadcrumbs counts as much. Thanks,

Fastest Way To Remove Footer Link? (post-Panda)
Hello, I have a website with 1k+ links pointed directly to an inner page and home page from blogspot domains. There are 3 links in the footer that points to different locations. 1st anchor text points to the person who designed the page template and links to their website (this doesn't affect us) 2nd anchor text uses a direct keyword that I am trying to rank for and links to the inner page. 3rd anchor text uses my website name and links to the home page I know that these are not good links and the content inside the pages are irrelevant to my own website. The links are embedded into the template on the footer and is site wide.I have already contacted the designer and have the links removed but those that have downloaded the templates still have the footer link. What would be the best way to remove all these footer links? Trying to contact each individual person who is using the template is not working out as most have not responded and some of the websites have not seen an update in years! Any thoughts? If you need additional information feel free to send me a direct message so I can send you an exact link.

.GOV Link - same impact on my site's rankings whether link to home or Gov related category?
I own a job site and I am about to get a link from a .GOV. My site has a category called "State Jobs". Should I ask the ".Gov" to link to my homepage or to the state job page and use the anchor text "State Jobs". I understand "State Jobs" page would get a big kick by that being the anchor text and linking to that specific page, but the question I have is this: for my site as a whole (homepage and various categories) would they get around the same "push up" whether the linking is to 1) my homepage with anchor text being my site's name or 2) to the state job specific page and in this case the anchor text would be "State Jobs"? thank you

What url should i link to?
Hi everybody, after some discussions i decided to keep my page on the old domain for better seo rankings; However, the new third level domain sounds better: poltronafraubrescia.zenucchi.it.... the question is: i'm going to recive a high value link and i don't know if i should link directly to the old adress ( www.zenucchi.it/ITA/poltrona-frau-brescia.it ) where the page is located or to the new one by making a 301 redirect to the previous. what's best? and second question what's the way to keep the page on this adress ( www.zenucchi.it/ITA/poltrona-frau-brescia.it ) but show poltronafraubrescia.zenucchi.it as url? thank you guido

Footer Link
Hello, Some of my hosted clients don't mind if I put a footer link on the bottom of their website. I would like to put a footer link that looks like Seomoz's - http://imgur.com/GrC8y Basically it would look like so: "Powered by "my company name". The world's #1 "keyword" provider (LOGO goes here) Here are my questions: 1. Would this hurt or help my rankings? 2. Should the logo be hosted by my clients so that a different ip is hosting my logo (where my image name will get picked up)? Or is it best to host it myself? 3. If my company name and keyword are getting linked, is that one link too many? 4. Is it a good idea to use a different keyword so that other keywords get picked up by SERPs, or should I set myself up on one keyword ? Thank you so much! Shawn

Aside from creative link bait, what's a solid link building strategy involve?
All things considered, directories, blogs, articles, press releases, forums, social profiles, student discount pages, etc, what do you consider to be a strong, phased, link building strategy? I'm talking beyond natural/organic link bait, since many larger accounts will not allow you to add content to their website or take 6 months to approve a content strategy. I've got my own list, but would love to hear what the community considers to be a strong, structured, timeline-based strategy for link building.
