Index or not index Categories
-
We are using Yoast Seo plugin. On the main menu we have only categories which has consist of posts and one page. We have category with villas, category with villa hotels etc.
Initially we set to index and include in the sitemap posts and excluded categories, but I guess it was not correct.
Would be a better way to index and include categories in the sitemap and exclude the posts in order to avoid the duplicate? It somehow does not make sense for me, If the posts are excluded and the categories included, will not then be the categories empty for google? I guess I will get crazy of this.
Somebody has perhaps more experiences with this?

No problem at all, glad I could help!
Good luck with the site!

You are really amazing Lewis! I understand what you mean with no indexing the pages 2, 3 etc..Yoast has there such option that I can mark it and it will not be indexing them.
Thank you so much for the tool you gave me to visit yoast site!!! It worked! Now I can learn more about it and figure out what is the best. This is clear that they have blocked ips from Kenya, although they have claimed they do not do that, and we paid almost 100usd for the plugin
Thank you very much Lewis!

Hi Iris,
Yes, you want the URLs to be included in the sitemap too as this is what the search engines will use to build a map of your website and list them in their search engines.
With regards to your duplicate page issue, this is to do with your pagination of the pages. There's a guide here which tells you the SEO best practices when it comes to handling pagination, so hopefully this will help - http://searchengineland.com/the-latest-greatest-on-seo-pagination-114284
Really, you don't want those additional pages to be picked up in the search engines, so a fix will need to be sorted for that. You'll probably need to find a developer / a plugin to allow you to not index the /2 /3 pages etc.
I don't do much work with Wordpress, so maybe someone else could advise you with regards to the archive section. If your categories and posts are indexed, then I would have thought that you've done the correct thing with the archives and set them to noindex. That being said, I have limited knowledge of carrying out SEO for wordpress so I would need to take a closer look into that to give you a better response..
Hope this helps at least a little!
On a separate note, you could try accessing the Yoast website through a proxy such as http://hidemyass.com/ - Might be worth a go?

You are amazing Lewis, thank you so much for your time. The posts in categories are displayed only with short summary, so I guess it should be alright then. Should they also be all included in the sitemap? I am very scared of duplicate content.
Also every category has approximately 3 pages and now the moz crawl shows me that I have duplicate pages like this below and that it does not know which one is canonical:
I am not sure how to sort this out.
I have there also some archive post which says under: "Note: instead of templates these are the actual titles and meta descriptions for these custom post type archive pages."
I set the archives on noindex as i do not want the archives with post shoved in search result, but the categories. I hope this is correct. There are also some options and media, oh my god it's killing me:-( I have no idea what it is.
The reason why I am so annoying with this is that I can't access yoast site, his support team is looking into it why, but did not get back to me yet:-( I guess they have blocked ips from Kenya although they said me they don't do this.
Thank you very much Lewis for all you have done for me already!

I'm not sure if I fully understand your question, but I'll give it my best shot to answer it.
If I was in your position, I would set the Yoast plugin to index both the categories and the posts, but make sure that the posts only show a short summary / the first 'x' number of words than the post. The reason behind doing this is similar to how an ecommerce store works.
On eCommerce stores, you have your categories which are used as funnels to find inner product pages. Categories are generally set to be indexed as they combine lots of relevant data for a user which helps create a better user experience. In your case, your category may be 'Villas' and inside that, you may list 20 individual Villas. If you didn't have your category pages indexed, you'd be relying on the search engine to filter a user down to either your homepage or one specific villa which you hope is right for the users choice (which most likely will result in a higher bounce rate).
Again, I'm not sure if I've understood exactly what you're looking for, but that's what I would recommend if you're asking which sections of your site should be indexed. Hope this helps!

Same subcategory in different main categories
Hi all, A fairly common problem in webshops is having the same subcategory in multiple main categories. Let's take the following example: example.com/legal/economic-law/company-law example.com/tax/companies/company-law I came across this interesting article on this topic: https://moz.com/community/q/e-commerce-site-one-product-multiple-categories-best-practice Although I understand that the answer on the above question is the most thorough method, I don't see a problem with just using canonicals either. On the webshop we are restructuring, there are only a few of these subcategories that return in multiple main categories, so generating a path via user activity and storing it in a cookie doens't seem really necessary to me. Is it ok to just use canonicals or can this cause issues? Thanks.

Why Aren't My Images Being Indexed?
Hi, One of my clients submitted an image sitemap with 465 images. It was submitted on July 20 2017 to Google Search Console. None of the submitted images have been indexed. I'm wondering why? Here's the image sitemap: http://www.tagible.com/images_sitemap.xml We do use a CDN for the images, and the images are hosted on a subdomain of the client's site: ex. https://photos.tagible.com/images/Les_Invalides_Court_Of_Honor.jpg Thanks in advance! Cheers,

Only the mobile version of the site is being indexed
We've got an interesting situation going on at the moment where a recently on-boarded clients site is being indexed and displayed, but it's on the mobile version of the site that is showing in serps. A quick rundown of the situation. Retail shopping center with approximately 200 URLS Mobile version of the site is www.mydomain.com/m/ XML sitemap submitted to Google with 202 URLs, 3 URLS indexed Doing site:www.mydomain.com in a Google search brings up the home page (desktop version) and then everything else is /m/ versions. There is no rel="canonical" on mobile site pages to their desktop counterpart (working on fixing that) We have limited CMS access, but developers are open to working with us on whatever is needed. Within desktop site source code, there are no "noindex, nofollow, etc" issues on the pages. No manual actions, link issues, etc Has anyone ever encoutnered this before? Any input or thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

Why is this site not indexed by Google?
Hi all and thanks for your help in advance. I've been asked to take a look at a site, http://www.yourdairygold.ie as it currently does not appear for its brand name, Your Dairygold on Google Ireland even though it's been live for a few months now. I've checked all the usual issues such as robots.txt (doesn't have one) and the robots meta tag (doesn't have them). The even stranger thing is that the site does rank on Yahoo! and Bing. Google Webmaster Tools shows that Googlebot is crawling around 150 pages a day but the total number of pages indexed is zero. It does appear if you carry out a site: search on Google however. The site is very poorly optimised in terms of title tags, unnecessary redirects etc which I'm working on now but I wondered if you guys had any further insights. Thanks again for your help.

Can Google index PDFs with flash?
Does anyone know if Google can index PDF with Flash embedded? I would assume that the regular flash recommendations are still valid, even when embedded in another document. I would assume there is a list of the filetype and version which Google can index with the search appliance, but was not able to find any. Does anyone have a link or a list?

Why will google not index my pages?
About 6 weeks ago we moved a subcategory out to becomne a main category using all the same content. We also removed 100's of old products and replaced these with new variation listings to remove duplicate content issues. The problem is google will not index 12 critcal pages and our ranking have slumped for the keywords in the categories. What can i do to entice google to index these pages?

Should you stop indexing of short lived pages?
In my site there will be a lot of pages that have a short life span of about a week as they are items on sale, should I nofollow the links meaning the site has a fwe hundred pages or allow indexing and have thousands but then have lots of links to pages that do not exist. I would of course if allowing indexing make sure the page links does not error and sends them to a similarly relevant page but which is best for me with the SEarch Engines? I would like to have the option of loads of links with pages of loads of content but not if it is detrimental Thanks
