Penguin 2.1 recovery
-
Our website took a huge hit due to Penguin 2.1 we are looking to keep our domain but create a new site to disavow all our links. Will this work? Any Ideas on this tactic?

Here's the only correct answer to this question: "Nobody knows".
According to Google, you need to identify your manipulative links, disavow or preferably remove them and then wait for a Penguin refresh. However, they've never been clear on whether removing is necessary. John Mueller hinted in a hangout that disavowing was the same as manually removing but then he went on to say that it could be better to manually remove.
I have seen some sites make some sort of recovery with Penguin, but the scary reality is that very few do. In order to recover you need to have a good base of natural links (not self made, but earned) and also be able to attract new links in the future. And, you need to do an extremely thorough job on cleaning up your link profile.
"we are looking to keep our domain but create a new site to disavow all our links. " - If you start up a new site on the same domain then you'll still have all of the same bad backlinks that got you into Penguin trouble so you won't be any further ahead. EDIT: That is, assuming that most of your links point to your home page. If you have bad links pointing to inner pages then you can change those urls and effectively remove those bad links. But, in most cases the bad links are pointing to the home page and those can't be removed by changing the site.

I will write a brief response not covering all my thoughts (due to time, sorry) -
Disavowing all links will not be enough to lift a site wide penalty. Tactics change depending upon whether this was a manual action or algorithmic penalty. Do you have any messages in GWT?
You need to make real, documented efforts to manually remove each and every bad link you have pointing at your site. There are many guides to how to do this and even a definitive guide on the Moz blog currently that works very well. The jest of it is you need to request each link be removed, remove it yourself, and document yourself along the way. Take screenshots of contact forms filled out on domains in question, keep email copies, and organize spreadsheets. Submit all of this to Google as a reconsideration package and only disavow those that never respond after multiple requests.
If it isn't manual and isn't site-wide, simply changing site structure and all URLs MIGHT potentially work, huge emphasis on MIGHT.
But the one thing that is for sure is your best bet is to start removing those links while shifting your efforts to a true SEM campaign and producing quality content to build organic links.

Some web 2.0 sites blocked by robot
I had created some web2.0 sites, google also indexed those sites but those sites robots.txt are disallow, this mean Google will not give any credit on ranking ? I have seen in google, those sites meta description was written - A description of this site is not available due to the robot.txt file. I checked that file, it is written disallow. Can google still count those sites for the ranking purpose ?

Best way to get over the Hump (from page 2 to page 1)
Hello, I've recently been able to bring my site way up in the rankings for some very competitive keywords. I've done nothing spammy, and everything has been done with a lot of detail and a focus on only using the best techniques. My site is on page 2 for a lot of keywords. What would be your suggestions for getting over that hump and making it to page 1? I'm happy with my results (coming from pages 30-50 to page 2 over a couple of months) but I'm not satisfied and won't be until I can be on the top of page 1... Any suggestions are welcome... Thanks

Following Penguin, what is the best practice for a web design agency placing a footer link in client sites?
For years we have included a 'Web Design by ...' link in the footer of all client websites designed by us. However, following the Penguin update, it seems that this legitimate practice could now be penalised. Should we be removing those links from our client's sites? There are tens of thousands, all with similar or identical text! For future client sites, should we avoid these footer links altogether? Or maybe limit the link to a single page on each site?

Penguin and Backlinks
I have been looking closely at my backlinks. I readily admin that I have not worked on backlinks in years since for e-commerce there is little white hat opportunity but here is what I find in doing a detailed analysis. I mostly have back links that are pointing to our nicely ranked site (well it use to be pre-penguin) being hyjacked by crappy sites that just put us on the their site in order to try and rank. I have no way to prevent this. They are like a cancer. Point me to the Doctor. Is Goggle penalizing us for these guys listing us in long pages list to create pages that obviously exist for one reason...... To display Adword Ads....isn't that a twist that simply sucks for use but has Google making money either way. If they want to penalize us for them stealing our link then we should get a say in accepting the link. Advice on dealing with this? Do I have to hire someone to create enough good links to overcome this trash that I have no control over ? Perhaps my competitors are doing this. I simply can't tell. Any advice is appriciated.

10,000 links in 2 minutes
Hey guys. A belated happy new year to everyone who reads this! I had a strange experience yesterday with linking from a clients website footer. Basically, the client currently has a serious duplicate content problem caused by a multiple language plug in. It has made Google believe that there are 10 different versions of the clients website online (one for each language). It is a real estate website and there are quite a few pages anyway, but with the error, I would suggest the page count is now around 10,000. We are waiting for the developer who installed the plug in to repair the problem and without thinking it through really, yesterday, we made a text link to our home page in their footer. Overnight, our rankings for the keyword we used for the text link have dropped from pos. 2 page 1 down to halfway down page 2. Is this basically a sign that it is not good have this footer link from their site? I guess it is kind of like 10,000 weighted links being added in one day right? For now we have removed the link, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Mark

Should I use the Root domain as a landing page for 2 languages?
Dear Sirs, I am developing a site www.mysite.com , this site has content in spanish www.mysite.com/es and in english www.mysite.com/en I would like to know if for SEO purposes if it would be good to have an enter page (landing page) at the root of the domain www.mysite.com where the users can choose the language, so I can get backlinks from both languages to the home page in this case the enter page. The thing is for spanish I dont see many seo resources so this way I can get links for the homepage www.mysite.com from english and spanish resources. and then focus in each folder language to get links for each one, english link sfor /en and Spanish Links for /es Thanks in advance, David
