Site content creation

I have a new customer that wants to build a comprehensive website to provide dental health information. However, he's a busy dentist and can't develop all the content himself. He particularly likes what mercola.com (http://articles.mercola.com/sites/current.aspx or http://blogs.mercola.com/sites/vitalvotes/default.aspx) is doing to provide content from other sources.
At first I thought this could be a good thing and that we could setup some Google Alerts that would alert us to new content related to specific topic areas and then post excerpts and links to the original source of the content.
But now I'm concerned that we'll get penalized for this.
Can you give me some advice on how to go about getting new/fresh content on a new website that doesn't require someone to write it all themselves?
Thank you!

I would go to that meeting with some examples....
Joe Schmoe dentist has articles about this and this and this on his site.
Ask what are his specialties? What expertise does she want to share? Pet peeves?
This is your dentist's opportunity to improve the dental health of every person who visits his/her website.

Wow! Thank you all for such fast and excellent responses. I guess you've all confirmed my suspicion. In looking again at the mercola.com website, I see that they are actually adding some unique content to each post. I suspect they may have a staff person or copywriter doing this since none of the posts are very long.
I'll re-approach my client and see if I can explain to them a better approach and why it's better in the long run to provide good unique content themselves.
Thanks everyone!

However, he's a busy dentist and can't develop all the content himself.
It is really hard to get webdesign and SEO clients to author their own content. They don't "get it" that this can be some of the most important marketing for their business and a way to demonstrate their credibility, professionalism and unique style.
I think that it is worth getting some ideas about the benefits of authorship together and approaching the dentist a second time about this subject.

It is a tough question. We have been down this road, and found that in the end, it has to be unique content. It's really challenging to ask a client who is not a writer to write, just as it is difficult to ask a writer to be a dentist.
We use a combination system at times. We send a q and A sheet to the client on different topics. We then have a professional writer turn it into a page or article.

Dunamis did really well in pointing out core issues, and a technique that I highly recommend to clients. What I'll add here is that if you go the route of excerpts, and do not add unique content to those - enough that the majority of content is the unique new portion, the site will be very poorly received by visitors and search engines.
Individual articles should be at least a few hundred words of unique content. Anything less will result in those pages either being completely ignored by the search engines, or worse, flagged as either duplicate content (you don't have to have an exact copy of another page to get the dupe content flag - even if only a good portion of the page is replicated, that's enough without that extra unique content), or even possibly not even indexed at all.

Tough question....I think that any solution that doesn't involve someone writing fresh content is not going to work well. If you're using someone else's articles then it's not unique content and I would guess that it wouldn't be terribly helpful for your site.
One option would be to hire someone to write articles. You can find copywriters in just about any niche. Or, what may be less expensive and possibly better would be for the customer to have an employee write articles for the site. If you wanted to be involved, one idea would be for you to scan google news occasionally - set up alerts for dental issues and then see what news stories come in. For example, here's one in today's news:
http://music.aol.co.uk/2011/06/07/john-lydon-speech-problems-surgery/
You could have the dentist or an employee write an article that describes what could have happened there. But, if you just provide an excerpt or a link it's not likely to help you much from an SEO perspective.
That probably doesn't help much though if you are looking for a solution that doesn't involve someone writing the material themselves!

First Post! Local Electrician Site.
I have a site for a local electrician that I just can't seem to get to move up the SERPS. I've tried everything form on-page optimization to local link building but It seems to always hover around position 11-17 for my keyword 'electricians grimsby' - which is not very competitive. Any advice would be invaluable.

Somone is creating a ton of links to my site!!!
Today I looked at site explorer and found over 1100 linking root domains and over 750 linking c-blocks. My site was hovering around 200 linking root domains and 150 linking c-blocks. I have not paid anyone to link to my site... Is this one of my competitors trying to create negative seo for a specific key word? I've worked very hard to never try to build links and only get links naturally by providing good content that people would want to link to. Can all hundreds of new links hurt me? What can I do? my site is www.yakangler.com | | |

30,746 Links from One Site to Our Site
I learned this morning in our Google Webmaster Account about a website has 30,746 links to our website. Both our website and their site present information related to plastic materials, so in essence they complement one another. However, is having that massive amount of links from one site to ours a bad thing and should we use Google Disavow? Also, they have a PR3 while our site is PR5 (not sure if that matters much).

Back linking to t foreign sites
One of our major competitors seems to be linking to an Asian speaking website that has a blog/product review formant. I was wondering how they are achieving this. Are there any non English /Asian sites worth submitting to and what is the best way to go about this if English is the only language you speak! And of course is it worth while doing this from an SEO perspective.

Targeting high Page Authority sites vs high Pagerank sites for backlinks?
For many years I've been working on seo/backlinks for my website. When doing analysis in opensiteexplorer I notice that the highest listed backlinks for my site are sites with high page authority and domain authority, rather than pagerank. For example one of the highest backlinks for my website has page authority/domain authority of 72/96 but the site itself is only a PR2, while my other backlinks have PR4, 5, or 6 with lower page authority. For a while I've been trying to partner with websites for backlinks from high pagerank sites, as I've always believed this is the #1 metric in relaying link juice. But OSE's metrics seem to not follow that train of thought -- it believes page authority/domain authority is a more important measure. Is it? Should I change my strategy to try to partner with websites that have high page authority rather than focusing so much on pagerank?

Adding a directory and aggregated content to my ecommerce site
I'd like to add a directory of websites to my ecommerce site. We operate within a nice niche both in terms of products and demographics. The directory would be specific to our verifical and market. My concern is how Google will see these external links. A reciprocal link won't be required to be in our directory, but I suspect many sites would like back to us as we outreach to them with content ideas, their directory links, and as we share them with our social network on twitter and facebook. The directory would be broken down into categories so each page may have 1-20 external links on it. Our architecture already incldes category links (all internal) so these would be in additional the links you would normally see on our site. I'd also like to aggregate some content - again, mostly external links. Will Google have take poorly to that aggregation?

Mutiple domains pointing on the same web site issues
We have in out company lots off different domains pointing to the same web site (On for most major countries actually...) . Unfortunately this was done by having all the DNS names to point to the same IP address to the target web site, and not by using a redirect as should have been done. As most of the pages on the web site are linked internally (All the pages of the site links at least to the front page), this resulted to have all the different domains linking one to each other causing artificial external backlinks to our main .com web site. I just wonder if google is giving us a penallity for this backlinks ? Also this causes the same content to be shared among different domains, resulting probably to self competition for keywords. Should we now remove all other domains resulting to a loss of these "artificial backlinks" ?

Content for links - diminishing value?
I'm offering content in return for contextual links to a number of website owners in my niche, and the up-take seems to be there. My concern is that the written piece generally won't be linked to from the homepage (i.e. blog post, featured article, etc), and so over time there's the risk that it will be lost deeper and deeper in the site's hierarchy. Is this a big issue given (I'm assuming) my content's value will diminish over time, etc. Most of the webmasters, are however happy for me to supply content sporadically. Ot is it still definitely worth progressing? Thanks.
