Offering discounts and getting backlinks - concerned.
-
Hiya Mozzers,
My client is about to offer discounts (to a few large multinationals... for staff) and there's every possibility these will appear on the web, with a backlink to my client's website (perhaps direct via websitest / via online newsletters and so on).
I am thinking of telling client to restrict the number of companies they interact with while I monitor backlinks in case there's some kind of problem with backlinks generated. I am also telling them on no account to ask for backlinks or encourage keyword rich links.
Any thoughts on this, anybody? Is there a risk of penalty or am I just being paranoid?
-
Yes, agreed - will ask for nofollows on backlinks as not doing this for SEO benefit anyway.
-
The problem is if google just only thinks it might be suspicious they will penalize the site and YOU have to prove that this is unjustified... it`s only a risk for a lot of trouble... keep campaigns like that small and as secret as possible...
better: never do things like that. If your site is good, links will be established automatically...
-
Thanks - it sure is confusing. I mean my background is in PR - and, for example, when I'm running a travel PR campaign I offer free accommodation in return for a review (and do not ask for links!). Of course that could be seen as linkbuilding too, though of course that's not the main focus or benefit (if the reviews are good, that is...).
-
You are not! Your thoughts about that issue are absolutely correct. I also would recommend that things like that should be done (if they have to be done!?) in a very moderate way!
Linkbuilding using campaigns that offer something (doesn`t matter what) when others create a link to your site is a kind of "buying links". Of course this is not an uncommon way to create links but Google will always take a closer look on how you do that - if this is done excessively the risk is high to get a penalty.

Is there a difference in SEO ranking value between a single backlink from a domain and multiple backlinks
Hi all I see that Moz gives data on Linking Domains and also External Links. The former being the number of domains which have one or more links pointing at your site and the latter the total number of links, including multiple links on the same domain. Apart from the potential benefit of people clicking the links and coming to your site and so increasing traffic, is there any SEO ranking benefit from multiple links? The only one I can think of is that you MAY get benefit from different anchor text for each link...? I'd be interested to hear any comment or experience on this. Bob

Getting Authority Social Blogs to Index
We have a few authority blogs that I manage to help increase our brand awareness and build power to our website. We have Blogspot, Wordpress, Tumblr & Typepad. Our content get's a summary syndicated to our authority blogs with an attribution link back to the original post. I also manually check them one a month to make sure it looks good and the content syndicated correctly. I even add unique content to these blogs once in awhile. I recently realized that the majority of the pages are not indexing. I added the blogs to our GSC & Bing webmasters and submitted the sitemaps. This was done on December 11th, as of now some pages indexed in Google and Bing says the sitemaps are still pending... Blogspot - 32/100 pages indexed Wordpress - 34/81 pages indexed Tumblr - 4/223 pages indexed Typepad - 3/63 pages indexed Can anyone help me figure out why I can't get Google to index more pages or Bing to process the sitemaps timely?

Want to get site on same sub-folder but move CMS
Hi guys, We currently have a site which uses WordPress & attached to it is a Woocommerce for its store. We want to just move the store to shopify, but keep the blog on wordpress. We also want to keep the same URL structure for the store the same e.g. www.website.com/store (woocommerce) to www.website.com/store (shopify) Is this even possible? Can you point a domain to two separate servers (servers – one for wordpress, one on shopify) at the same time? This is SEO related as we want to preserve the authority as a sub-folder. See this: https://inbound.org/blog/the-sub-domain-vs-sub-directory-seo-debate-explained-in-one-flow-chart Cheers.

Tidied up site by getting rid of bad pages and now rankings tanked. - Please help
Hello Mozzers. We historically had Location specific landing pages on our eCommerce site. examples - site.co.ukj/cleaning-enquipment-london site.co.ukj/cleaning-enquipment-Manchester These all had unique content(600 words approx) and ranked in top 10 for many cities. I understand these would have been classed as doorway pages so we got rid of them (301'd back to the category pages) and now our rankings for these terms have tanked. We also have specific branch pages but we have kept these like many other companies with multiple branches do. It feels like by doing a good thing and tidying up everything , we are actually making our site worse. Everything else seems to be in place. Loads of new regular content , clean profile , mobile friendly, lots of citations etc etc. Any idea what could be going on here. Here's a link in our site - http://goo.gl/0yjSd8 thanks Pete

How does Tripadviser ensure all their user reviews get crawled?
Tripadvisor has a LOT of user generated content. Searching for a random hotel always seems to return a paginated list of 90+ pages. However once the first page is clicked and "#REVIEWS" is appended to the URL, the URL never changes with any subsequent clicks of the paginated links. How do they ensure that all this review content gets crawled? Thanks, linklater

Is a different location in page title, h1 title, and meta description enough to avoid Duplicate Content concern?
I have a dynamic website which will have location-based internal pages that will have a <title>and <h1> title, and meta description tag that will include the subregion of a city. Each page also will have an 'info' section describing the generic product/service offered which will also include the name of the subregion. The 'specific product/service content will be dynamic but in some cases will be almost identical--ie subregion A may sometimes have the same specific content result as subregion B. Will the difference of just the location put in each of the above tags be enough for me to avoid a Duplicate Content concern?</p></title>
