Total Indexed 1.5M vs 83k submitted by sitemap. What?
-
We recently took a good look at one of our content site's sitemap and tried to cut out a lot of crap that had gotten in there such as .php, .xml, .htm versions of each page. We also cut out images to put in a separate image sitemap.
The sitemap generated 83,000+ URLs for google to crawl (this partially used the Yoast Wordpress plugin to generate)
In webmaster tools in the index status section is showing that this site has a total index of 1.5 million.
With our sitemap coming back with 83k and google indexing 1.5 million pages, is this a sign of a CMS gone rogue? Is it an indication that we could be pumping out error pages or empty templates, or junk pages that we're cramming into Google's bot?
I would love to hear what you guys think. Is this normal? Is this something to be concerned about? Should our total index more closely match our sitemap page count?

As well as parameters mentioned you may possibly have heaps of duplicating categories, tags etc. What I would also do is start searching Google with something like site:www.example.com/directory/ or possibly site:www.example.com/category/directory/directory/ so you are tightly narrowing down the results, switch to 100 results per page and manually look for clues.

If you have 1.5 million pages and you think your sitemap is comprehensive at 83,000 then yes, your CMS is needlessly generating pages. It's usually not a big deal from a ranking standpoint, but it can make other important issues hard to detect. I would clean it up, but that's a business call you'll have to make.
The first step is diagnosing where are the URLs are coming from. What you do next will depend, but I will give you the best advice I can without knowing what types of extraneous URLs you have and how Google is treating them:
First, I'd start with WMT > Crawl > URL Parameters. Quite often your CMS will generate URLs, and Google usually knows how to handle them. If there are a lot of URL parameters, Google them and see if they're exactly the same as other pages. If they are, make sure you have canonical tags in place to point them to the main version. There's more you can do with parameters, but it'll depend on what you find so I won't go into more detail. As a general rule, though, a CMS should not generate a page unless it is uniquely useful as differentiated landing page or a page for people to link to.
Also check for parameters in your analytics program. They could actually be messing up your pageview data depending on how you report. There's a post on fixing that in GA here:
http://blog.crazyegg.com/2013/03/29/remove-url-parameters-from-google-analytics-reports/
Next I'd look at the "Advanced" tab in WMT > Google Index > Index Status . Are there a lot of URLs removed? If so, check on these pages and see why they're removed and why they exist.
I would also run a crawl with Xenu and Screaming Frog to make sure crawlers are finding a reasonable number of pages and that they're not getting stuck in crawl loops. (crawling variations of a page endlessly). These kinds of issues can prevent new pages from being indexed on time because Google is wasting time (your crawl budget) running in circles.

Rob,
Your sitemap is but an indication to Google about urls on your domain. The sitemap does not limit google to crawling or indexing only the urls listed on it, nor is it a directive that tells google to remove urls from the index that it has already crawled. As stated in GWT, use **robots.txt **to specify how search engines should crawl your site, or request **removal **of URLs from Google's search results with the URL removal tool Google webmaster tools under the "google index" link.

How does one submit data to the Knowledge Graph?
I'm working with a very reputable open source civic data compiler who'd like to give their data to the knowledge graph for it to be used. Does anybody know where I should start with this? Or, do you think it's possible to e-mail Google and ask to be included in the Knowledge Graph? The company that owns this compiler will likely have connections to them. Thanks!

Google and PDF indexing
It was recently brought to my attention that one of the PDFs on our site wasn't showing up when looking for a particular phrase within the document. The user was trying to search only within our site. Once I removed the site restriction - I noticed that there was another site using the exact same PDF. It appears Google is indexing that PDF but not ours. The name, title, and content are the same. Is there any way to get around this? I find it interesting as we use GSA and within GSA it shows up for the phrase. I have to imagine Google is saying that it already has the PDF and therefore is ignoring our PDF. Any tricks to get around this? BTW - both sites rightfully should have the PDF. One is a client site and they are allowed to host the PDFs created for them. However, I'd like Mathematica to also be listed. Query: no site restriction (notice: Teach for america comes up #1 and Mathematica is not listed). https://www.google.com/search?as_q=&as_epq=HSAC_final_rpt_9_2013.pdf&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&lr=&cr=&as_qdr=all&as_sitesearch=&as_occt=any&safe=images&tbs=&as_filetype=pdf&as_rights=&gws_rd=ssl#q=HSAC_final_rpt_9_2013.pdf+"Teach+charlotte"+filetype:pdf&as_qdr=all&filter=0 Query: site restriction (notice that it doesn't find the phrase and redirects to any of the words) https://www.google.com/search?as_q=&as_epq=HSAC_final_rpt_9_2013.pdf&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&lr=&cr=&as_qdr=all&as_sitesearch=&as_occt=any&safe=images&tbs=&as_filetype=pdf&as_rights=&gws_rd=ssl#as_qdr=all&q="Teach+charlotte"+site:www.mathematica-mpr.com+filetype:pdf

301 vs 302
We recently launched a redesign and I noticed from running a crawl using Screaming Frog SEO that our redirects are all being seen as 302. I know 302 is a temporary redirect, but does this hurt SEO rankings when all our redirects are being seen as 302s instead of 301s? Also, the way I implemented the redirects was by using the IIS Manager Tool. Is it possible that our IIS Manager Tool is not configured properly and instead of adding the redirect as 301, it is inserting it into the rewrite file as 302s?

How to have pages re-indexed
Hi, my hosting company has blocked one my web site seeing it has performance problem. Result of that, it is now reactivated but my pages had to be reindexed. I have added my web site to Google Webmaster tool and I have submitted my site map. After few days it is saying: 103 number of URLs provided 39 URLs indexed I know Google doesn't promesse to index every page but do you know any way to increase my chance to get all my pages indexed? By the way, that site include pages and post (blog). Thanks for your help ! Nancy

Sitemap.xml Question
I am pretty new to SEO and I have been creating new pages for our website for niche terms. Should I include ALL pages on our website in the sitemap.xml or should I only have our "main" pages listed on the sitemap.xml file? Thanks

How Do I Create Multiple Pages In HTML Sitemap?
I'm working on an html sitemap for our ecommerce site and want to limit the links on each page to less than 100. I've created an article for the initial page, but what is the proper way to go to the next page? Do I create another article page (and so on and so on) until I have the sitemap completed? If so, how do I link from one page to the next? Would my on page text read: "sitemap continued" with anchor text on the link "sitemap page 2.."? It seems like all the sitemaps I've seen just fill one page with links and very little regard for "link saturation" and continuous pages. Thanks!

Canonical tag vs 301
What is the reason that 301 is preferred and not rel canonical tag when it comes to implementing redirect. Page rank will be lost in both cases. So, why prefer one over the other ?

How do I index these parameter generated pages?
Hey guys, I've got an issue with a site I'm working on. A big chunk of the content (roughly 500 pages) is delivered using parameters on a dynamically generated page. For example: www.domain.com/specs/product?=example - where "example' is the product name Currently there is no way to get to these pages unless you enter the product name into the search box and access it from there. Correct me if I'm wrong, but unless we find some other way to link to these pages they're basically invisible to search engines, right? What I'm struggling with is a method to get them indexed without doing something like creating a directory map type page of all of the links on it, which I guess wouldn't be a terrible idea as long as it was done well. I've not encountered a situation like this before. Does anyone have any recommendations?
