Are you guilty of too much planning and not enough action like me?
-
I really don't need an answer to this, but thought it would be an interesting topic to discuss.
I have found that since joining SEOMoz, I have been getting some great information on advanced SEO tactics. I'm learning how to analyze competitor's backlinks, create and promote linkbait, craft a convincing link request email and so much more. But I've also found that I am in a state of paralysis by analysis! I'm not doing anything!
So...this week I'll be putting into action a piece of linkbait that I've been working on for a while...and then promoting it. It's time for action!

I think that it depends upon the size of your organization and the position where you sit.
If you are responsible for a lot of people then you better be planning a lot.... but if you are the widget guy then you don't need to plan as much, your job is to make widgets.

I think we're all very lucky to have such problems. This field is so diverse and there are opportunities everywhere.
I'd study 100% if I could. I like it that much, alas there are bills. In direct response to your statement there's an old saying that if you love what you do you never work a day in your life. Sounds like you do. Congrats.

I think it all depends on how shiny the object is (how interesting the site, data and market are) for me. The shinier the object, the more I want to gaze. Fortunately over the years I've come to realize this and catch it earlier in the gazing process. So when I feel like I've turned into a deer in headlights, I take action.
What's really a blessing for me is that as I've become more and more skilled, I've been able to increase my rates to the point where I spend about 80% of my time blogging, reading articles, tweeting, and participating in the community, and the rest actually working on client projects.
Which means when I'm focused on client projects, I have a major need to stay focused and not get lost in the data - it's an even bigger priority than it ever was before.

Howdy Dunamis, I don't think you're alone with this at all. We use Google Calendars to manage our time carefully and to avoid slipping into the 'SEOmoz analysis paralysis'. That said, I personally feel like that's half the fun of being an SEO, all that study time! It makes me wonder how companies like SEOgadget, Distilled, and SEOmoz (when they did consulting) are able to teach and innovate soooo much. And yet they got stuff done as well. Distilled's new mantra seems to be Getting Things Done, so I suspect they've had the same problem also
I think a 50/50 time split is well enough. Perhaps, 70/30 (doing, studying) for those working by themselves. What do you think?

Back links from sites like Wix & Wordpress.
Sorry for the newb question. If you get a back-link from a blogger on wordpress will you get any of the 'link juice' from the platform. i.e) from the Wordpress site. I'm talking about bloggers whose URL's would be like...www.wordpress.com/bloggersitename I imagine not, but it would be good to know for sure. Isaac.

What causes total external links to fluctuate so much?
On my dashboard, external links refers to links on other websites pointing to my own website, correct? If so, I'm seeing some interesting data on my report this week. Apparently I have 129 external links. This is down by 380. What the heck happened here? I've been doing nothing differently, just chugging along, producing good content. What on earth would cause 380 links to my website just up and disappear? I'm also tracking a competitor. This competitor currently has 3,262 external links. But this is up by 1,900 from the previous update. What the heck happened here? I know it's probably impossible to tell for sure, but what could have caused such a meteoric growth in my competitor? I can see if they already had 50,000 and they increased by 1.9k, but 1.9k is a significant fraction of their current external links.

How much time does it take for the links to be forwarded to redirected link?
Hi there,
Link Building | | MoeezLodhi
Thank you for taking out some time for this question; I have changed the permalinks last week for a website.. I forgot to redirect old permalinks to the new one.. So I did 301 redirection, it has been 4-5 days since I did that but the links are not forwarded to the new Permalink so far.
How much time should I wait for the links to be forwarded to the new permalinks? Secondly, I am sure I have done the 301 redirect correctly, as when I go to the old url / permalink it directs me to the new permalink. So I am sure 301 is done correctly. Do I need to submit the sitemap again?0 -
How much should a link building program cost?
Hi All, I am relatively new to the world of SEO but it is vital to our business that we improve in this area. I believe our site architecture is good although we have a new site coming in the next few weeks which is effectively a re-skinning of the existing one that makes the user experience more relevant. What I would like to know is how much a link building program shoudl cost from an SEO provider and how they quantify what they charge - is there some kind of indicative cost per link or is it just "give us some money and we will do our best?" We have started writing daily articles on our news site and our natural listings are already pretty good. What I am looking to achieve is top three status for the London area (where we work) accross a broad range of keywords. I know this is what everyone wants but we are already front page and top 3 for many keywords and the back link building would appear to be where we are weaker compared to some of our competitors. Thanks James www.morganpryce.co.uk

When link building is returning little success, what is a good plan b?
I know that in an ideal world you would be able to create an amazing site with great content that every one would link to. But what if you're not able to so this, what if you the market you're in is very competitive and you're struggling to find good link partners. I know I can submit to directories and article/press sites but surely this isn't enough to get me any where near my desired goal! I guess I'm asking: is gaining reciprocal links the be and end all of Serps, am I missing any other SEO techniques to get my site higher up the rankings?

Are backlinks from sites like diigo useful for SEO?
I read an SEO article that recommended getting backlinks from social bookmarking sites like diggo.com. Does anyone have any thoughts on the usefulness of these types of links?

How do paid directories like thomasnet.com do so well in the serps? Aren't the Panda updates supposed to be moving us away from this?
With all of the updates/changes to Google's algo, I assumed that paid listings & links like those on thomasnet.com would have less merit. Is this an incorrect assumption?

How to have an internal call to action with an anchor that employs the correct internal linking practices?
I wanted to put a call to action in my internal profiles, but I'm not able to get out of the classic "check out" and "learn more" links. Right now the best copy I've been able to come up with is: <nickname>is using StyleJam for his web design portfolio - check out the benefits </nickname> Where "check out the benefits" is a link to my home page. I wanted to understand first of all how important this is, and second what techniques you use for internal calls to action. TIA.
