Link Acquisition Assistant

I understand directories are of less value these days. However, as a portion of your link profile are you finding benefit from directories discovered through the Link Assistant? This is all under the assumption you also have great a great value prop and content etc. Thank you!

Thank you for your thoughts Cyrus,
Because we only focus on one industry if is easier for us to develop a list of the criteria you mentioned above. I will see about performing a follow-up comment later if I can isolate any sort of influence these types of directories have on our site.
Thanks,
Chad

I am not opposed to high-quality, niche specific directories. Specifically, I would look for industry-specific directories (not broad directories with industry specific categories) that offer good, human written descriptions, editorial reviews and do not allow the submitter to dictate the anchor text.
Usually, directories run by industry organizations, non-profits, government bodies, universities, community services, etc generally make fine directories - especially if inclusion means good referral traffic as well.
Everything else, including general directories, heavily templated thin content sites with optimized anchor text I would avoid.

I was about to post the very same question.
This is surely sending out mixed signals in an era in which listing in directories is a busted flush. After all, virtually all of these directory links are paid links. And last year SeoMoz (as then was) took down its list of recommended directories. What gives?

Good Point Mark. Thanks for sharing.
I would be interested to hear if anyone else has any additional angles or perspectives on high authority directories to enhance your backlink profile.
Happy Friday!

I would not look at PA much when thinking of directories. The fact that its a directory will make it worth much less that a regular site with the same stats.
Look at dmoz for example it has a PA of 95 and over 9 million links from 77k domains and i wouldn't even count it as a world beating link now. In my opinion a directory like that is worth getting but only if its not to much work. Anything much lower i would simply avoid.
I am however not an expert on the subject so i would be interested in seeing what others think!
-
Thanks Mark,
What makes it tempting is that some of the niche directories do have a decent 30+ PA where the links are actually placed for the keywords I am looking at. Do you think it need to be even higher? They are straight up directory pages with company descriptions.
Appreciate your thoughts,
Chad

I would count any directory as little to no worth at the moment. I would link to my site from one only if it was very very high ranking (i.e. dmoz) or very relevant to you and it may generate actual traffic. Other than that i would say its a waste of time and cash if they ask for it.

Top pages according Link Explorer shows 301 pages and images
I was looking at the top pages on my website using Link Explorer, it contains 301 pages and image URLs. Is this expected or I should be doing something to fix it? URL with second highest PA in site is a page already 301 redirected more than 6 months back. URL with highest PA in my blog is a random image in the blog, rather than any blog posts. Is this normal? Thanks -Aji

In the Moz Site Crawl, what does "External Links" mean?
I thought I knew what it meant but am finding instances where the value in the column, "Linking Root Domains" is greater than the value in the column, "External Links?" Thanks!

Unusual "internal links" causing SEO issues?
Hi all, I'm working on an ecommerce site which has been around for almost 20 years. Over the years it has started to suffer in Google's search results and the decision was recently made to completely overhaul the site. We're now very happy with the website's design, and care was taken to maintain page rank via 301s, etc. However, the site has just fallen off the bottom of Google's first search result page (for the first time in years) for our main keyword. I signed up here in the hope of using Moz's SEO tools to help us return to our former glory, but I'm seeing some confusing results: I've run a crawl test on our site, as well as on our two biggest competitors. One thing that really stood out was that we have over 1000 "internal links" to our homepage, whereas our competitors both have around 20-30 (both of which appear at the top of the first SR page). Since the rest of the "on-page SEO" looks OK, I suspect that this could be causing our problems, but I don't understand where this "internal links" number is coming from. Links to our competitor's homepage appear in the navigation bar on every single one of their product pages (which they have about 500 of), yet your report only claims that they have 30 links. The only link to the homepage appears in the site's main navigation bar (which obviously appears on every product page - exactly as it does on our competitors' sites). Additionally, almost every other page on our site apparently has 0 "internal links" and 0 page authority. Is this a problem with Moz's crawl test tool, or is our site actually at fault? The above has been asked directly to Moz staff, but I haven't had a reply. I'd hugely appreciate any words of wisdom from the community. Many thanks in advance. Nick

Crawl Report Internal Links Count
We recently ran a crawl report on www.phase1tech.com. Some of the pages are coming back with a large amount of 'internal links'. These 2 pages for example are showing 800 internal links: http://www.phase1tech.com/Upcoming-Events

http://www.phase1tech.com/Contact At best there are approximately 70 links on the page. Where is the 800 number coming from?0 -
Presenting Link Building Information to Clients
Hi, I am hoping for some help concerning (from other SEO's Agencies, Consultants, etc.) what would you have found to be the best tool to present to your clients that you are doing the work the client paid for? I have a number of clients to perform various SEO services for them and so I have chosen MOZ.com as my TPA to show a good visual presentation of what I have done and how the site is trending, since coming on board. I have been using SEOMoz.com or MOZ.com for a while now and I have always found it a fantastic product. However, I did wish that I could generate reports for each client and it would be automatically emailed to the contact person I have been working with. But, my big dilemma is what TPA should I use in conjunction with MOZ.com - RavenTools.com or BuzzStream.com - when it pertains to Link Building Management. Once again, I have used both, but I have found RavenTools.com a tool with a lot more features and I can present information about what links I have generated to each client. Buzzstream.com is not as useful when it comes to this. So, I have been presenting the clients that I have with information for MOZ.com (KPI's - Organic Search, Traffic and New Visitors etc as a measurement of my Link Building efforts) but they want to have more detailed information about each link that I have gotten for them. Does anyone have a suggestion to best approach this problem? I hope I expressed my problem clearly enough for good feedback. Thanks, Brook Shipley ShipleySEO.com

Moz Report: Number of Domains linking to Domain
In the Moz report, what does the "number of domains linking to domain" indicate? I'm analyzing our competitors link profile and noticed some numbers as high as 2369232? Is there a form that explains the reports a little more in detail? Thanks,

Can Moz use canconical links to prevent notices about duplicate content issues?
if so how do we enable this - we've an average size site with a few hundred products but they appear in multiple categories, canonical url points to it's primary category (but a new page exists for each section... so for /cat-a/abc there will be another page cat-b/abc and again but the canonical points to cat-a always for that product) basically I see this kind of duplication error / notice as a false positive... help me
