.com or local tld ?
-
Hi I have a webshop for my own clothing and boots brand.
The boots brand is changing name soon and i will move it to another domain.I will off course 301 the boot related urls to the new domain to pass on link juice.
But now i have the option to go for bootbrand.com/uk bootbrand.com/nl bootband.com/de or use the local tld which i own allready. Bootbrand.nl bootbrand.de etc
Knowing that i own both .com and the local tld's what would be the best option for SEO?

Disable or re-setup according to the new desired settings

I think you are right. Hreflang seems to be the best solution. Now i have to go and figure out how to set this up in a magento multistore backend.
I guess when i enable hreflang i can disable the geotargeting in WMT?

This is what Google means by its geotargetting:
"The tool handles geographic data, not language data. If you're targeting users in different locations—for example, if you have a site in French that you want users in France, Canada, and Mali to read—we don't recommend that you use this tool to set France as a geographic target. A good example of where it would be useful is for a restaurant website: if the restaurant is in Canada, it's probably not of interest to folks in France. But if your content is in French and is of interest to people in multiple countries/regions, it's probably better not to restrict it."
Hope this clarifies the two questions you have, and it would seem that hreflang as result would be a better option no?

Dear Vadim,
I think i get it now.
_Will you publish content in multiple languages? _Yes I am
If so, will you publish multiple versions of the same content? Yes I will
_If so, you will want to make use of the hreflang tag. _I will implement this but i think setting up example.com/de and using Google WMT to set up geotargeting for Germany in this example should do the same trick or not?
Are you targeting specific countries, or multi-country regions? If it's the latter, than a single domain may be more efficient. I am targeting multi-country regions. It more the language that is important than the country. I will target German, Dutch, French and English in Europe. Which will cover a big part of Europe. I think that example.com/de will rank in Germany, Austria, Switzerland where example.de will more likely only rank in Germany?
If i understand correctly when using hreflang or WMT geotargeting it should really not mather much which approach you take....

Hi Michael,
I would tackle and answer this for you but Cyrus Shephard just gives such a great answer here
Let me know if this provides enough food for thought to make a best decision about .com vs ccTLDs as this answer depends on the outcomes you desire and the work you would like to put in!

Localizing URLs Path - Hreflang
Hello, This is a simple question regarding how URLs should be managed for proper results with the hreflang tags. Right now, we have a website in English and German. The hreflang tag is working properly. This is how we currently have it: https://www.memoq.com/ https://de.memoq.com/ But we will soon change the way we localize our web, moving out of the sub-domain structure. There is this possibility of localizing the URLs path, but I was wondering if the hreflang tag would work in such case. The new structure would look something like: https://www.memoq.com/why-memoq https://www.memoq.com/de/warum-memoQ So my question is: If we localize the keyword in the path of the URL, will the tag still work? Or do they need to be in the same language than the English version. Thanks!

What domain name do you think is better for SEO: sirocco-webdesign.com or sirocco-web-design.com?
Hello, I would appreciate it very much if you share with me your thoughts on what domain name I'd better pick out in terms of productive SEO: sirocco-webdesign.com or sirocco-web-design.com? I know hyphens are not good, but second domain looks better, I think.

Does the order of results from "site:www.example.com" tell us anything?
Does google rank in order of page authority with "site:www.example.com" or is it random? As most of the results of the first 6 pages for our site are internal search results pages ( eg www.example.com/search/product-results)

The fact that search results are index at all is frustrating, they are not linked to internally or externally. The open site explorer does not have any back links for any of the search pages, and I checked the submitted site map and no search urls are submitted, so I don't know how google are finding the search urls. Also tested some of the search urls with aherf and no back links. But since its ranking the search pages ahead of the category(landing) pages with "site:" has me worried that not only are they indexing the urls, but they giving them higher page authority0 -
Clone TLD Problems
I have an online services website www.geekwik.com which I started 3 months back. I also recently made a clone in TLD geekwik.in which has the same content, only pricing is in INR and is targeted at India users, while geekwik.com is targetted at global users with pricing in USD. How do I manage these 2 sites so that I do not face duplicate content penalty from google and the sites do not cannibalize on each other. Is there anything specific I need to do in robots.txt or .htaccess or sitemaps or hrelang etc? I personally feel that after putting up geekwik.in couple of weeks ago, the ranking of geekwik.com went down and I started getting lesser search queries. I would be putting up an IP based switch on both sites shortly so that Indian users are redirected to .in TLD and non-Indians are redirected to .com TLD. From SEO standpoint what are the things I need to do to counter these problems mentioned above. Putting India version in a subdirectory is also an option.

How to redirect my .com/blog to my server folder /blog ?
Hello SEO Moz ! Always hard to post something serious for the 04.01 but anyway let's try ! I'm releasing Joomla websites website.com, website.com/fr, website.com/es and so on. Usually i have the following folders on my server [ROOT]/com [ROOT]/com/fr [ROOT]/com/es However I would like to get the following now (for back up and security purpose). [ROOT]/com [ROOT]/es [ROOT]/fr So now what can I do (I gues .htaccess) to open the folder [ROOT]/es when people clic on website.com/es ? It sounds stupid but I really don't know. I found this on internet but did not answer my needs. .htaccess RewriteEngine On

Local results without geotargeted keywords
i'm trying to rank the site appliance-repair-ny.com for the New York City area. I managed to have the site rank pretty good (the site is less than 6 months old) for keyphrases with NYC, New York and Manhattan but i don't understand how to get the site rank higher for the ones without those keywords. For example: Appliance repair NYC - rank 1 Appliance Repair New york - rank 4 Appliance repair (without location) not in results Anyone can help me please? 🙂 Thanks!
