Google images
-
Hi,
I am working on a website with a large number (millions) of images. For the last five months Ihave been trying to get Google Images to crawl and index these images (example page: http://bit.ly/1ePQvyd). I believe I have followed best practice in the design of the page, naming of images etc. Whilst crawlng and indexing of the pages is going reasonably well with the standard crawler, the image bot has only crawled about half a million images and indexed only about 40,000.
Can anyone suggest what I could do to increase this number 100 fold?

Hi Richard,
I'm not a Google Images expert (otherwise I'd offer to help!) but you could check out the companies / individuals listed on Moz's <a>Recommended Providers page</a>. Many are agencies that prefer to work with people on longer retainers, but you may find someone to work with there, or the people listed may be able to point you to a trusted contact who specialises in images.
I haven't heard of people specifically specialising in image search but that doesn't mean those people don't exist, or that you won't find someone who has a lot of experience with image-heavy photography / art websites.
Cheers,
Jane

Hi,
Thanks for those who have offered advice so far.
I am looking an buy the services of an SEO expert with experience in getting vast numbers of images indexed by Google Images. If that is you or you know someone who could help, get in touch.

Thanks,
I think we could sharpen up the title and some other things.
However, we are doing reasonably well with indexing of pages - it's the images that seem to be so slow.
We do have image sitemaps (eg http://bit.ly/RDHmyo) but our experiments show that this is not much help.
This sitemap above was submitted about 14 days ago and has had about 2 million pages indexed but only 5,000 images indexed.
It feels like I have my foot on the hose pipe

Thanks for looking at this.
We are adding sitemaps "slowly" - ie 10 million at a time. eg: http://bit.ly/RDHmyo
This stemap was submitted about 14 days ago and has had about 2 million pages indexed but only 5,000 images indexed.
We will add another this week.
I think you may well be right about crawl budget. I have ensured that the bots are almost exclusively focused on these pages (well over 90% of crawls are of these pages). I am assuming that the only way t increase budget is to increase authority. Is that right?

I don't know about a 100-fold increase, but as Martijn said, an image sitemap will certainly help. You can often build images into the standard sitemap, but with so many images, you are best keeping these separate.
Something else I would look to do, is change the page Title structure. Currently, this says:
"The sky begins to lighten during morning twilight behind a suspension tower of the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge. - DYFXET | Alamy"There is no mention here of photography, royalty free, stock images, etc.
I would be cutting the description of the image down so it looked something like this:
"The sky begins to lighten during morning twilight behind a suspension tower... Royalty free stock photography | Alamy"
Look at others who do well in stock image searches (Shutterstock, 123rf, etc.) and match some of what they do.

Hi Richard,
Have you tried submitting image sitemap files to both Google Webmaster Tools as Bing Webmaster Tools. It's probably related to your crawl budget that Google is not crawling the millions of images on your site. That's why they maybe also can't found more than these pages.

Reporting Webspam to Google
We are in ecommerce, and there are a few review sites that are dominating the rankings for our products. The sites are very good - very well written content (2000+ words) and visually appealing sites. The 2 main culprits are clearly black hat. One site's backlinks are pure spam, and the other is buying footer and sidebar links. Will ratting them to Google have any impact? If not, any suggestions on how to compete? Our competing pages are product descriptions, and creating a 2000 word product description seems inappropriate. Also, all of these products are brand new, and due to extensive media spends, the search volume is very high. Since they are beating us to the punch by getting good content posted first, they are proving difficult to displace.

Image URL Change Catastrophe
We have a site with over 3mm pages indexed, and an XML sitemap with over 12mm images (312k indexed at peak). Last week our traffic dropped off a cliff. The only major change we made to the site in that time period was adding a DNS record for all of our images that moved them from a SoftLayer Object Storage domain to a subdomain of our site. The old URLs still work, but we changed all the links from across our site to the new subdomain. The big mistake we made was that we didn't update our XML sitemap to the new URLs until almost a week after the switch (totally forgot that they were served from a process with a different config file). We believe this was the cause of the issue because: The pages that dropped in traffic were the ones where the images moved, while other pages stayed more or less the same. We have some sections of our property where the images are, and have always been, hosted by Amazon and their rankings didn't crater. Same with pages that do not have images in the XML sitemap (like list pages). There wasn't a change in geographic breakdown of our traffic, which we looked at because the timing was around the same time as Pigeon. There were no warnings or messages in Webmaster Tools, to indicate a manual action around something unrelated. The number of images indexed in our sitemap according Webmaster Tools dropped from 312k to 10k over the past week. The gap between the change and the drop was 5 days. It takes Google >10 to crawl our entire site, so the timing seems plausible. Of course, it could be something totally unrelated and just coincidence, but we can't come up with any other plausible theory that makes sense given the timing and pages affected. The XML sitemap was updated last Thursday, and we resubmitted it to Google, but still no real change. Anyone had a similar experience? Any way to expedite the climb back to normal traffic levels? Getting out of Google's Penguin
Hi all, my site www.uniggardin.dk has lost major rankings on the searchengine google.dk. Went from rank #2-3 on important keywords to my site, and after the latest update most of my rankings have jumped to #12 - #20. This is so annoying, and I really have no idea what to do. Can it cause bad links to my site? In that case what will I have to do? Thanks in advance,

Image ALT Descriptions
Due to the way our system is and the way we want to do something. We have to make the description for each image in the ALT. Now this is not just a few words but is actually a few sentences. Is there going to be any negative disadvantage to doing it this way? The positives I see is that it will help with accessibility and atleast the bots will be able to tell what the item is about. The negatives is that maybe this description could be better used elsewhere?

Wordtracker vs Google Keyword Tool
When I find keyword opportunities in Wordtracker, I'll sometimes run them through Adwords Keyword tool only to find that Google says these keywords have 0 search volume. Would you use these keywords even though Google says users aren't searching for them?

Google omitting some entries
Hi, I used this tool to test some domains. The tool can be found at http://www.virante.com/seo-tools/duplicate-content I have no questions about the other checks but with the similarity check. My question is how do i get Google not to omit some entries very similar to the top 1000 pages on my site? Will appreciate your answers, thanks. Suleman

Getting rid of a site in Google
Hi, I have two sites, lets call them site A and site B, both are sub domains of the same root domain. Because of a server config error, both got indexed by Google. Google reports millions of inbound links from Site B to Site A I want to get rid of Site B, because its duplicate content. First I tried to remove the site from webmaster tools, and blocking all content in the robots.txt for site B, this removed all content from the search results, but the links from site B to site A still stayed in place, and increased (even after 2 months) I also tried to change all the pages on Site B to 404 pages, but this did not work either I then removed the blocks, cleaned up the robots.txt and changed the server config on Site B so that everything redirects (301) to a landing page for Site B. But still the links in Webmaster Tools to site A from Site B is on the increase. What do you think is the best way to delete a site from google and to delete all the links it had to other sites so that there is NO history of this site? It seems that when you block it with robots.txt, the links and juice does not disappear, but only the blocked by robots.txt report on WMT increases Any suggestions?
