Are xml sitemaps still in use today?

Hi,
Are you still using XML sitemaps today? If yes, does it bring any benefit to your website like faster indexing of webpages or better rankings? Are you using special features like video sitemaps or sitemap index files?

I wrote a tool myself years ago (phpSitemapNG in 2005) but haven't used, supported or further developed it since than.
What would be your requirements for the perfect sitemaps tool?

No they don't.

I generate them manually, havent really found a tool that does it well, if you find one though be sure to let me know

Thanks for your feedback. Do the priority and the other optional values of the sitemaps file have any impact?

In practice I have found that having a video sitemap for a group that use videos to go along with their products really helped get the videos indexed very quickly. I also feel like when we did a huge domain restructure the sitemap helped the search engines (Bing! in particular) index the pages at a much quicker pace.

Tobias, I Video sitemaps to get videos findable. You can write your own XML site map here is the Google webmaster page http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=80471
or you can use Brightcove, Sorenson, etc.

Authorship - How bad is it to use a fictional character instead of the actual author ??
Hi I know authorship is all about the author hence should be a real person (the author) but in the case of children's books etc etc is it really not ok to develop authorship around the character rather the actual author ? For example kids searching google will recognise the character but not the author Even if G doesnt like it how bad is it to ignore them and proceed with the character ? All Best Dan

Sitemap for Mobile Version of Site
Hi, I just did a mobile version (http://m.vietnamvisacorp.com) of my site (http://www.vietnamvisacorp.com). And was looking for some guidance on where to put it in the sitemap. Do i need an entirely new sitemap for mobile site, or do i just add to my existing .xml of desktop site. Thank you!

On page SEO Strategy / What pages to use?
What is the best page to use for targeting your hard to rank keywords? Using Transcription Service For Videos - Have Question Around Search and Spiders
Hi All, So I have put together a weekly video series on security topics. I have read an SEOmoz post around how you can boost SEO by adding the transcription to the page, which makes perfectly good sense. My question is, can I include the first couple of paragraphs and then have a "read the full transcription" so when the user clicks, the rest of the content appears? Do the search engine spiders only crawl the first two paragraphs in this instance or do they crawl the whole thing even though the entire content is not on the page? I dont mind making the page longer and including the entire transcription if it is easier for SEO but if there is no difference, than I think the first option would be the best user experience. What is the best way to make use of internal anchor text links without appearing to be a 'spammy' webpage?
I've recently been spending some time going through all the content on our website, henstuff.com, adding internal anchor text links to product copy with the link following back to the product's generic catagory. I've been focusing on the search term 'hen party accessories', but have also been using 'hen do accessories' and 'hen night accessories'. I know that internal linking has value when it comes to SEO and rankings, but was keen to find roughly at what point usage of a certain search term for anchor links is seen as spam by the engines. Is there a certain formula to follow when it comes to internal anchor text links?
