How can such a small company out-rank the big players?

I'm really puzzled how for many keywords the company www.leathersofaworld.com, a retailer of sofas is able to out rank very large companies such as DFS.co.uk and IKEA. They rank 1st for the phrase 'black leather sofas' and have done for a long time. They currently rank 4th for 'leather sofas' and don't seem to move.
Having looked at their back links, I can't see anything special and their domain authority is only 25 compared to DFS which is 45.
Can anyone help me with this?

I can see the search results for "black leather sofa" and Leathersofaworld.com is the only one with black-leather-sofa in the product URL. So for relevancy search, I suppose Google gives them the gold for this term.
For popularity, I'm not sure. If you do a search for "red leather sofas", they are #3 behind two of the companies you mentioned. For "brown leather sofas" they are #4. I see this site is consistently ranked highly for this group of keywords, so the query isn't a fluke. I'd venture a guess that popularity helps the other sites rank better for the other keywords here, but for some reason all the factors just make it work for "black leather sofas."
I'm not pretending to know exactly how Google's algorithm works, but looking at this in terms of a relevance/popularity split does help explain some of what's going on.

I can see that IKEA doesn't have such a pretty looking URL but other big companies do. Looking at what other companies show up for the phrase 'black leather sofas' there is SCS and Harveys which are very large companies here in the UK and leaders in their field. Using the Open Site Explorer the large compaines out do this cmpany easily with considerably more links. Surely its can't just be down to their pretty looking URL can it?

Did you need specific help to out rank www.leathersofaworld.com or do you just want to understand how they perform better than Ikea and DFS?
One question I have is where you are located. Google will likely show results based on location. Leather Sofa World has "leather sofa" in their domain name and in their product URL, plus they have structured data and Google authorship set up. Ikea's URLs are not as human friendly.
Compare: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00214416/ and http://www.leathersofaworld.com/sofas/brown-leather-sofas/latina-3-1-1-seater-espresso-brown-leather-sofas
Just seems that Leather Sofa World is more relevant than Ikea for terms like "leather sofa."
Now I will say that Leather Sofa World could greatly improve their Magento e-commerce site, but it's generally a nice site.

From Moz's Knowledge Base we know this:
"Page Authority is Moz's calculated metric for how well a given webpage is likely to rank in Google.com's search results."
There are two pages:
1. http://www.leathersofaworld.com/ (PA 36)
2. http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/categories/departments/living_room/10662/ (PA 46)So there is no such big difference in Page Authority, but there is a really big difference in external links. I'm still sure that it is about external links, but let's see what other SEOs are going to say. Also don't forget that links are influencing on PA...

Surely IKEA and DFS would be able to outrank this company easily by being so large and having many links to their root domain? IKEA and DFS are much more well known and have a much higher authority. I can see that Leather Sofa World so have some good external links but this only looks to be a few in comparison.
I would assume these really large sofa companies would have teams of people working on their SEO but this small company do not seem to lose rank at all.

It shows only external links (filtered). IKEA doesn't have any external links, and if you see Leather Sofa World has many links with anchor "Leather Sofa World". For me, links are still the most important factor in SEO.
Please, don't forget that long tail keywords are about 70% of search traffic. So, I think for new websites is better to focus on long tail keywords instead keywords like "sofas", "beds"...

How can I stop my facets being crawled?
Hi If my facets are being crawled, how can I stop this? Or set them up so they are SEO friendly - this is new to me as I haven't had to deal with lots of facets in the past. Inverse variation in Rankings between countries
Hi, Our ranking between India and USA is varying inversely like....when we improve in India...drops in USA and vice-versa. And the possible correlation I have from my end is: We have reclaimed some links and removed same. It happens at both redirects and removal of those redirects. When we reclaimed some links, we improved in India and dropped in US. And when we removed these redirects, vice-versa. Any idea on this? Please share. Thanks, Satish

Can someone help me understand why this page is ranking so well?
Hi everyone, EDIT: I'm going to link to the actual page, please remove if there are any issues with confidentiality. Here is the page: https://www.legalzoom.com/knowledge/llc/topic/advantages-and-disadvantages-overview It's ranking #2 on Google for "LLC" This page is a couple months old and is substantially heavy in content, but not much more so than all the dozens of other pages online that are competing with it. This is a highly competitive industry and this particular domain is an extremely huge player in this industry. This new page is suddenly ranking #2 for an extremely competitive head term, arguably the most important/high volume keyword being targeted by the entire site. The page is outranking the home page, as well as the service page that exactly targets the query - the one that you would think would be the ranking page for this head term. However, this new page is somewhat of a spin-off with some additional related content about the subject, some videos, resources, a lot of internal links, etc. The first word of the title tag exactly matches the head term. I did observe that almost no other pages on the site have the exact keyword as the first word of the title tag, but that couldn't be sufficient to bring it up so high in the ranks, could it? Another bizarre thing that is happening is that Google is ignoring the Title Tag in the actual HTML (which is a specific question that is accurate to the content on the page), and re-assigning a title tag that basically looks like this: "Head Term | Brand." Why would it do this on this page? Doesn't it usually prefer more descriptive title tags? There are no external links coming up on Moz or Majestic pointing to this page. It has just a couple social shares. It's not being linked to from the home page or top nav bar on the main site. Can anyone explain how this particular page would outrank the main service page targeting this keyword, as well as other highly authoritative, older pages online targeting the same keyword? Can you spot the differences?
Well, I have been scratching my head on this for days, I will try throwing the ball to you with hopes someone more experienced than me can help. The scenario is: e-commerce -> brand page -> SERP -> comparison between how two pages rank; one from my website, one from a competitor website. The brand is Michelin, the keyword is "pneumatici michelin" (equivalent in italian of “michelin tires”). I am not looking at SERP first page, where competition is surely much more fierce. Can a home page penalty cause a drop in rankings for all pages?
All my main keywords have dropped out of the SERPS. Could it be that the home page (the strongest) page has been devalued and therefore 'link juice' that used to spread throughout the site is no longer doing so. Would this cause all other pages to drop? I just can't understand how all my pages have lost rankings. The site is still indexed so there's no problem there.

How can someone not call B.S. on this site ranking 4th.
We manage a lot of sites that are around pharmaceuticals and lawsuits. I was checking a couple of the sites around the keyword: Actos Lawsuit using the keyword difficulty with serp analysis. Our sites have done very little Adwords except for first month about a year ago and we have always ranked well and the client is very happy with the results. Tonight I notice a site that is http://wikilawsuit.org/drug-recalls/actos-side-effects-bladder-cancer-actos-lawsuit/ They are ranked fourth on Google. Our url which is http://actos-lawsuit.org/ is ranked 9th?? Frankly there are several sites ranked ahead and when you look at the parameters all the way across some we are killing. But Wiki, everyone is killing and it is still fourth. I ran it in OSE and the metrics came back better, but there is at best 3 to 4 real links out of 30 domains. This is a commercial site with a contact form in right sidebar and my guess is they are selling leads to lawyers. So they are about as Wiki as Hooters. That said, we see all the talk about quality links and I am seeing a lot of sites with few quality links and lots of junk links. Should we still believe it matters? Or, is it that it matters when the sites are huge (JC Penny), etc. but not if the site is under some critical number of poor links? Looking forward to a moz Fest on this.
