Does 301 vs 302 matter when dealing with "social signal"?
-
When looking at links and how search engines look at "social signal," does it matter if a link is 301 vs 302?
In addition to that, if I build out my own short URL system that gets used for link redirects that include referral attributes, would/could I get penalized if I use 301 instead of 302?

Hi Robert,
Jonathan has said that nothing will be passed as parameters, but even if they were, I don't see that there would ever be a _penalty _for this (in the true sense of a penalty - algorithmic or manual penalisation for spam). You could flood Google with a million query strings and no canonicalisation if you did it badly which could get dangerous, is the only thing I can think of and even then, this would be easy to fix with canonicalisation on your own sites.

That's exactly what I'm looking at, thank you Jane.
@Robert, the "referral attributes" would not be passed through as parameters, but maybe as session data instead, therefor providing stronger SEO benefit.
Very thorough, thank you Jane

Jane,
Frankly, when I read your response I was a bit dismayed at myself. I think you zeroed in much better than anyone else did.
In his question Jonathan adds an interesting qualifier: "...own short URL system that gets used for link redirects that include referral attributes, would/could I get penalized if I use 301 instead of 302?" (italics are mine and are used to highlight the qualifier).
You state, "There would be no reason to penalise a URL shortener or its target URLs for this."
Don't you think that would be dependant on the "referral attributes" he is adding?
Best,
Robert

Hi Jonathan,
I think I understand what you're asking - you're asking if it matters for social signals if a link out from a social media website (be it Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, etc.) goes through a 301 or a 302 redirect, e.g. a bit.ly link goes through one 301 to get to the target page, right?
Unfortunately, I don't know whether a 301 or 302 has any influence over how Google treats links from social media (which are usually also nofollowed, but we're talking purely about social signals here). I can only speculate that if I were Google and I wanted to look at social signals as opposed to SEO ranking signals, I would not take into account whether the redirect was a 301 or a 302.
If I were building my own tool to do this, I'd absolutely use 301s just because they are best practice for SEO, so you're going to get the benefit of the 301 if the link comes from somewhere other than a nofollowed social media site. There would be no reason to penalise a URL shortener or its target URLs for this.

Please provide an exact example of what you are trying to do, or planning to do. That will allow you to get much better advice.

I think Spencer answers this well. You also have to ask, what is the issue with social signals that you are worried about? The only application I could think of is you want to redirect, not pass link juice (like with a page with a lot of poor quality links) but want to maintain social signals to that url.
I am going to guess that the 302 would not work for passing social as well.
Best,
-
It's hard to understand exactly what you're asking but I'll try to answer anyways.
A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect and passes link juice.
A 302 redirect is a temporary redirect and does not pass link juice.
There are very few situations where you would use a 302 redirect instead of a 301 redirect. I've never advised anyone to use a 302.
Unless you're doing something manipulative I highly doubt you would be penalized for using a 301 redirect. Note that Bitly uses 301 redirects.
Here's a great Moz resource to check out on the topic of redirects.

URL Too Long vs. 301 Redirect
We have a small number of content pages where the urls paths were setup before we started looking really hard at SEO. The paths are longer than recommended (but not super crazy IMHO) and some of the pages get a decent amount of traffic. Moz suggests updating the URLs to make them shorter but I wonder if anyone has experience with the tradeoffs here. Is it better to mark those issues to be ignored and just use good URLs going forward or would you suggest updating the URLs to something shorter and implementing a 301 redirect?

Any idea why Google Search Console stopped showing "Internal Links" and "Links to your site"
Our default eCommerce property (https://www.pure-elegance.com) used to show several dozen External Links and several thousand Internal Links on Google Search Console. As of this Friday both those links are showing "No Data Available". I checked other related properties (https://pure-elegance.com, http:pure-elegance.com and http://www.pure-elegance.com) and all of them are showing the same. Our other statistics (like Search Analytics etc.) remain unchanged. Any idea what might have caused this and how to resolve this?

301 redirect with DNS?
Quick question. Is it possible to 301 redirect a non-www to www. (properly in terms of SEO) with DNS (C Name, A name, or other) ..have searched around and found conflicting information. Would like to know a definite answer. I usually implement all 301 redirects with htaccess. However have a client situation where we only have access to the CMS, but which does have DNS settings. thanks in advance, Greg

Need to update Google Search Console profile for http to https change. Will a "change of address" option suffice or do we need to create a new GSC profile?
In the past I have seen most clients create new Google Search Profile when they update to a https URL. However a colleague of mine asked if just updating the change of address option will suffice https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/83106. Would it be best to just update the change of address for the Google Search Console profile to keep the data seamless? Thanks

301 vs 410 redirect: What to use when removing a URL from the website
We are in the process of detemining how to handle URLs that are completely removed from our website? Think of these as listings that have an expiration date (i.e. http://www.noodle.org/test-prep/tphU3/sat-group-course). What is the best practice for removing these listings (assuming not many people are linking to them externally). 301 to a general page (i.e. http://www.noodle.org/search/test-prep) Do nothing and leave them up but remove from the site map (as they are no longer useful from a user perspective) return a 404 or 410?

"Original Content" Dynamic Hurting SEO? -- Strategies for Differentiating Template Websites for a Nationwide Local Business Segment?
The Problem I have a stable of clients spread around the U.S. in the maid service/cleaning industry -- each client is a franchisee, however their business is truly 'local' with a local service area, local phone/address, unique business name, and virtually complete control over their web presence (URL, site design, content; apart from a few branding guidelines). Over time I've developed a website template with a high lead conversion rate, and I've rolled this website out to 3 or 4 dozen clients. Each client has exclusivity in their region/metro area. Lately my white hat back linking strategies have not been yielding the results they were one year ago, including legitimate directories, customer blogging (as compelling as maid service/cleaning blogs can really be!), and some article writing. This is expected, or at least reflected in articles on SEO trends and directory/article strategies. I am writing this question because I see sites with seemingly much weaker back link profiles outranking my clients (using SEOMoz toolbar and Site Explorer stats, and factoring in general quality vs. quantity dynamics). Questions Assuming general on-page optimization and linking factors are equal: Might my clients be suffering because they're using my oft-repeated template website (albeit with some unique 'content' variables)? If I choose to differentiate each client's website, how much differentiation makes sense? Specifically: Even if primary content (copy, essentially) is differentiated, will Google still interpret the matching code structure as 'the same website'? Are images as important as copy in differentiating content? From an 'machine' or algorithm perspective evaluating unique content, I wonder if strategies will be effective such as saving the images in a different format, or altering them slightly in Photoshop, or using unique CSS selectors or slightly different table structures for each site (differentiating the code)? Considerations My understanding of Google's "duplicate content " dynamics is that they mainly apply to de-duping search results at a query specific level, and choosing which result to show from a pool of duplicate results. My clients' search terms most often contain client-specific city and state names. Despite the "original content" mantra, I believe my clients being local businesses who have opted to use a template website (an economical choice), still represent legitimate and relevant matches for their target user searches -- it is in this spirit I ask these questions, not to 'game' Google with malicious intent. In an ideal world my clients would all have their own unique website developed, but these are Main St business owners balancing solutions with economics and I'm trying to provide them with scalable solutions. Thank You! I am new to this community, thank you for any thoughts, discussion and comments!
