To Subdomain or Not Subdomain?
-
I have a client that has a construction company that services a regional area. They now developed a PRODUCT that they want to promote that would have a national reach.
We are redesigning the site, with new branding and all. How do I treat the website URL structure? Is the product it's own domain because of the target market? Or should I make a subdomain because we want to tie the companies together in some fashion. Every article I read confuses me more on how to handle this.
Thoughts?

I would not say I am convinced, but that is the only tested evidence I have seen. plenty of antidotal evidence, but the first test.
Thanks -
Rand answered a Q&A question here in February. He recommends keeping all content on the same subdomain. He said that Moz tested it..
http://moz.com/community/q/moz-s-official-stance-on-subdomain-vs-subfolder-does-it-need-updating
I redirected a couple subdomains into folders and the results have been kickass.

LOL! Don't sweat it too much.
Then I would go with a sub domain. It's easier like that in this situation. You'd have plenty of options when something changes down the road.
PS. Alan is correct, it's hard to find much proof/evidence of this posted anywhere online. It's more of a "from experience" kind of thing.

I would go subdomain, there has been much said about subdomains v subfolders where most say subfolders are best, but when asked no one has ever been able to provide evidence of this, in fact all I have seen said by google is that there is no difference.
So with subdomain you should benefit from shared authority, as well as separation in appearance.

It is SO tricky……Driving me crazy kind of tricky….
It is a company under the brand. Basically, they install solar on residential and commercial buildings. The product is something that mostly government agencies I think would buy, and they will ship the product anywhere (I don't know yet if they even install the product). That product is solar as well.
They never invested in SEO on the first site they have up (which is only for their regional solar services)….so I am staring from ground zero.
Does that change your opinion Dennis?
Thanks!

Hi Courtney,
Such a tricky problem! You'll probably get a lot of subjective replies.
I would only use subdomains if I wanted to treat it like a different "main" product or a company under the main brand
For SEO purposes, it's better to not make it a sub domain to get the full benefits of the main domain (I'm assuming the domain is already strong) so it's only a last resort for me.

Sub domain creates competition with the current domain. If it's a stand alone product it makes sense to have a whole different site. With that said It really depends on the product and what exactly is being done.

Redirecting Homepage to Subdomain Bad or Good Idea??
I have a very old forum that still gets a lot of traffic, but when migrating over to another software that is cloud based we cannot redirect using same domain, SO the only option would to be to change the cname on a subdomain and then REDIRECT all the traffic from the ROOT domain permanently - would this be a bad move as the root domain wouldnt be used anymore as now its just setup to be redirected in order to use the software we need to use? Domain is 17 years old.

What changes to subdomains - geo targeting - redirects - to boost our global ranking?
Hi, This is a complex question and I will really appreciate your help as this decision is essential to our business! We are taking a decision about what to do with our website in the terms of redirecting visitors based on their location. At the moment we have the following structure of the website: .com version practically only hosts our blog. The US traffic get presented with .com/us version automatically and the rest of the world gets presented with .com/uk. We are thinking to make .com version global (so no more .com/uk for all countries) in order to improve our ranking globally. At the moment we have good ranks in the UK, but not in the US and other countries. Our company is a global company now and we would like to get more exposure in other countries. We are also thinking to allow the option of geo redirects possible via a small pop-up window - visitors will be able to select their preferred country so next time they will be presented with their default option. To make it short: we would like to boost our domain without dropping ranks in the UK which we are now achieving through .com/uk version. Any ideas, recommendations or experience, I will appreciate! Thanks! Kat

Robots.txt on subdomains
Hi guys! I keep reading conflicting information on this and it's left me a little unsure. Am I right in thinking that a website with a subdomain of shop.sitetitle.com will share the same robots.txt file as the root domain?

Content on subdomain...
We recently moved our Wordpress site to a new host (WPEngine). We had forums on the old web host, which we need to migrate to a new forum platform (Xenforo) and integrate into the WP site. Since WPEngine only allows Wordpress on their servers, we need to install the forums at another web host, on one of our other domains. We might point to the forums through a subdomain, like this: forums.our-primary-domain.com The main reason we're re-installing the forums is for SEO value. HOWEVER, since our forum content will be on another domain, will we have an issue? If so, is there a workaround that would give us 'credit' for that content? Thanks much.

Understanding page and subdomain metrics in OSE
When using OSE to look at the **Total External Links **of a websites homepage, I dont understand why the page and subdomain metrics are so different. For example, privacy.net has 1,992 external links at the page level and 55,371 at the subdomain level. What subdomain? www redirects to privacy.net. And they have 56,982 at the root domain level - does that mean they have around 55k deep links or what?

Competitive Domain Analysis & Subdomain Metrics
I have a web site that shows with all zeroes in the Competitive Domain Analysis and subdomain Metrics screen. I don't think this is possible because I have a ton of links out there to this web site from a forum that I visit. Can someone help me understand how this might be. I am hoping it's not some dreaded www vs non www issue because I think I solved that issue for this site. The site is www.nationalcurrencyvalues.com
