Canonical Tag for a 404 page
-
Hi
i have a got a 404 page for example : www.example.com/404.aspx
can i use canonical tag on this page
so that when the search engine hits the page www.example.com/123123123 13123
it will say
Will this be right method ?

The two most important points expressed in this thread of comments are:
- There is a reason for 404s, don't 301 everything
- There is no reason to lose the value of someone linking to your page.
If those 2 statements are true then you should create an individual error page, and then everytime you serve a 404 you should include canonical to that error page. That page should have useful content (explanation of page missing and where you could go), probably a search box, and links to the most valuable content on your site. This satisfies both points.

The meta redirect tag will keep the link juice on the 404 handler page and not pass the page rank on to the home page. Something you may want to consider if you have a lot of 404's.

Thanks for your reply,
I have already setted up that and in fact i read something over here...
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/08/now-that-weve-bid-farewell-to-soft-404s.html
We feel this technique is fine because it reduces confusion by giving users 10 seconds to make a new selection, only offering the homepage after 10 seconds without the user's input.
But my question is sometimes you can't control how other people linked to you and they link back to us with a url that does not exist. And in googlewebmaster control panel we get an error for the saying Duplicate title - 404 Page Not Found.
For that if i use it should be ok or not

If you love writing code, read on
I like setting my 404 pages to evaluate the incoming URL (the one that failed) and trying to redirect the user to the proper page while 301ing the hand off. If you cannot evaluate the page to a good page, then 301 to the home page. If you can only evaluate to a category level (storefront type site), then 301 them to the category level.
It takes some fiddling around with the code and lookups to the database, but you get a much better experience for the user.

You could but, you would be better creating a search page so 404's go to www.example.com/search.aspx so users can search for the content they were actually looking for in the first place. Ideally all your pages should have the canonical in the head to ensure trailing / or capitalization errors all pass juice to the correct page and do not get reported as duplicates.

Alt tags advice
Hello, When describe an alt tag from what I understand you need to put your keyword when you can and not literally describe the image. For example let's say I have a picture with 2 cyclists on a road in the dolomites. I would tend to describe it saying " 2 cyclists riding in the dolomites" But for google it is better to describe it saying "Bike riding in Italy and through the dolomites" based on the fact that I am looking to rank on "italy bike tours" Isn't it ? Thank you,

More Singular KW Targeted Landing Pages vs. Less Multiple KW Targeted Landing Pages
So my question is... I have a adopted a site which currently ranks quite well for some industry competitive keywords with a number of poor quality landing pages which specifically target a singular keyword. I am wondering if its worth merging some of these pages together into one authoritative, better quality landing page targeting multiple keywords (as the intent for some of these keywords are largely the same). What i don't want to do is jeopardise the existing rankings in doing so. The alternative option would just be to improve the content on the existing landing pages without merging. What are peoples thoughts on this? Are there any positive case studies out there where merging has had a positive effect? Any help would be great. Regards,

Page Title in Local SEO Title Tags?
Hi All, Still working on my title tag usage for local SEO, and I was hoping for some more feedback. My question is this: In Local SEO titles, I'm using location + keyword combinations, unique on each page. However, since each page has a specific title for the client, I figure I should be placing that at the front. My thought here was that this helps with the overall usability to the reader of the website. Ex. Contact Us page for Pizza shop Contact Us | Springfield IN Gourmet Pizza | Moe's Italian Pizza Anyone have thoughts on this one? Thank you!

Should I autogenerate 25k pages?
My main product is database conversion software. As we support tons of databases, it's pretty easy to generate thousands of pages simply by creating a template and changing source/target database name, some information on how to connect etc. Of course, getting links to that many autogenerated pages is close to impossible. So, not wanting to endanger my main site (http://www.spectralcore.com) I created a separate site (minisite) for this product alone (http://www.fullconvert.com). In two months this new site is live, it got to the point of having over 1k visitors per month. That's for a site with no inbound links or history. Now, my question is - should I create equivalent thing on my main site, with different template to avoid duplicate content - and leverage history and authority - or Google can get me penalized for this practice. I don't think 25k generated pages are a bad thing, they simply provide for tons of highly targeted landing pages. Am I wrong?
