We are in charge of a website with 7 languages for 16 countries. There are only slight content differences by countries (google.de | google.co.uk). The website is set-up with the correct language & country annotation e.g. de/DE/ | de/CH/ | en/GB/ | en/IE. All unwanted annotations are blocked by robots.txt. The «hreflang alternate» are also set.

The objective is, to make the website visible in local search engines. Therefore we have submitted a overview sitemap connected with a sitemap per country. The sitemap has been submitted now for quite a while, but Google has indexed only 10 % of the content.

We are looking for suggestion to boost the index process.

Just a couple thoughts off the top of my head:

          1. Double-check all technical international SEO issues and ensure that the robots.txt file is not mistakenly blocking any desired pages.

          2. Make sure that you have a separate Google Webmaster Tools setup for each root domain / subdomain / subdirectory (however you have set up the international sites) and have submitted an individual XML sitemap for each one. Also make sure that the geographical targeting in each GWT setup is set to the desired country.

          3. If Google is only indexing a small percentage of a site's pages, it is often because Google is thinking (accurately or not) that a site has duplicate content. "Duplicate content" is not a penalty per se -- it is when Google, for example, sees two pages that are very similar and then indexes only one of them so as to not provide redundant pages in search results.

Example: Say that you have an e-commerce product that has ten variations (such as color). The content of each variation page would often be very similar except, for, the listed color. In the case, you would want to use a rel=canonical tag on all variation pages that points to the main page for that product. (In other words, you don't want all of those pages to be indexed, and Google often would not index them anyway.)

Most likely, I would use a tool such as Moz or any other SEO software to crawl the site and see if any duplicate-content issues are present. Once these are addressed (if the problem exists), then Google will likely crawl and index your sites more thoroughly and accurately.

I hope this helps -- good luck!

Possible to Migrate Website Design to Different Theme?

Last year we purchased a $79 them and coded a new designer our real estate website. The  database of listings was transferred to the new theme. A year later we realize the new theme is not that fast; does not perform great, so despite optimizing our server we are not getting very fast performance. So, my question is, can we take the design, the CSS of our current theme (and database) and transfer it to a better performing theme?  We are in a very competitive niche and our website must perform quickly both desktop and mobile. If this is feasible is this a major production? Note we are very happy with the design and this would solely be to improve download speeds to improve the user experience and get better ranking. Thanks, Alan

How To Optimize For Same Word, Different Spelling

Hi all. Just wondering what peoples stance is on using multiple variations of keywords on a webpage - those keywords that have the same meaning and search intent, but are just spelt differently. i.e. 'woodscrews' and 'wood screws' (the latter has a significantly higher search volume) You could approach the webpage in 4 different ways; 1. Use ONLY 'wood screws' on-page, and in the page <title><br />2. Use ONLY 'woodscrews' on-page, and in the page <title><br />3. Use BOTH 'wood screws' and 'woodscrews' on-page, and BOTH in the page <title><br />4. Use BOTH 'wood screws' and 'woodscrews' on-page, but ONLY one variation in the page <title></p> <p>We've run some tests in the past but there were never any clear takeaways, a mixed bag of results really.</p> <p>Also, If they are considered the same keyword by Google why are the ranking positions always different for each variation?</p> <p>I'm not sure there' a specific answer to this, just interested to hear peoples thoughts really.</p> <p>Many thanks in advance!</p> <p>Lee.</p></title>

Hreflang : mixing with/without country code for same language

Hello, I would like to display 3 different english versions of my website : 1 for UK, 1 for CA and 1 for other english users. It would look like this for a page: . (english content with £ prices) <link rel="alternate" href="https: xxx.com="" en-ca" hreflang="en-CA">(english content with $CA prices)</link rel="alternate" href="https:> <link rel="alternate" href="https: xxx.com="" en="" " hreflang="en">(english content without currency)</link rel="alternate" href="https:> I wonder if I can mix this hreflang without country code with hreflangs with country code for the 2 other specific versions... or if the hreflang without country code version will appear whatever the country, even if i specified it . In other terms, is  hreflang="en" > hreflang="en-CA" + hreflang="en-GB" if tagged together on a same page? Thank you

Sitemap: unique sitemap or different sitemaps by Country

Hi guys, i have a question about sitemaps. We are doing an international site, e.x. www.offers.com for landing page and www.offers.com/br for brazil, www.offers.com/it for italy, etc... i don't if we should do an unique sitemap for all countries or separate sitemaps by country, e.x.: unique sitemap: www.offers.com/sitemap.xml - including all sitemaps www.offers.com/br/sitemap.xml - sitemap for brazil market only. Thank you

Substantial difference between Number of Indexed Pages and Sitemap Pages

Hey there, I am doing a website audit at the moment. I've notices substantial differences in the number of pages indexed (search console), the number of pages in the sitemap and the number I am getting when I crawl the page with screamingfrog (see below). Would those discrepancies concern you? The website and its rankings seems fine otherwise. Total indexed: 2,360 (Search Consule)
About 2,920 results (Google search "site:example.com")
            Sitemap: 1,229 URLs
            Screemingfrog Spider: 1,352 URLs Cheers,
            Jochen

            Redirecting index.html to the root

Hi, I was wondering if there is a safe way to consolidate link juice on a single version of a home page. I find incoming links to my site that link to both mysite.com/ and mysite.com/index.html. I've decided to go with mysite.com/ as my main and only URL for the site and now I'd like to transfer all link juice from mysite.com/index.html to mysite.com/
When i tried 301 redirect from index.html to the root it created an indefinite loop, of course. I know I can use a RewriteRule.., but will it transfer the juice?? Please help!

Why should your title and H1 tag be different?

Is it dangerous to have your H1 tag and your title the exact same thing?  My thought was that it's not be the best use of space, but that it couldn't cause harm. What do you think?
