Anyone else see a redundant hostnames message in GA this morning?
-
Message reads as follows:
Property sqlsentry.com is receiving data from redundant hostnames. Consider setting up a 301 redirect on your website, or make a search and replace filter that strips "www." from hostnames. Examples of redundant hostnames: sqlsentry.com, www.sqlsentry.com.
We have had our preferred domain set to www for months and I've never seen this error before today. A quick search shows others getting this as well. I did notice our 301 is no longer working so I am going to set that back and see what happens.
-
Thanks. We made sure a 301 redirect is in place but the error is still there. It's been days now. I'm not sure what else to do.
-
Saw this recently on a site with a WordPress installation added in a subdirectory. The root domain was set up with the www but /blog was not...

I actually just work for this company and have shifted from a support role into an SEO role. I agree about less hands in the cookie jar but as you said, it doesn't always work that way
-
Eww that's scary!
Is this your site or a clients site that you are working on? If an outside developer or team of devs are working on a project that you own or one that is for a client of yours, I would request that you are consulted prior to any changes like that.
Less hands in the cookie jar the better as you know. However, I know that isn't always the scenario but if a cookie gets a bite taken from it, I'd like to know who did it and when they did it at the very least.
I hope fixing the 301 clears up the issue you are having in GA!
-
Unfortunately I have no way of knowing what the developers do so they could have modified it. I've asked that it be righted. Thanks!
-
Interesting... I'm not getting this message on any properties in our account. But thank you I will keep an eye out in case something pops up on us!
I wonder why your 301 would no longer be working though...
Is there anything you can remember that was done that could have caused that? Was your htaccess file modified without your knowledge?
Kind of troubling I'd say. Set that back and see if that message clears up for you!

Anyone else noticing "Related Topics" featured snippet? Is this new?
First time I've seen this type of featured snippet and now have seen it twice in the space of a couple hours. Queries on Google UK desktop: surgical instruments Hawking radiation Is this new? It definitely is for the "surgical instruments" search. Google are highlighting related topics/keywords in bold beneath the usual featured snippet. b261ea5b3279991f8549d20127f8fde3.png

Anchor name URLs & anchor blocks: how Google sees them?
Hi guys, Anchor name URLs & anchor blocks: how Google sees them? As far as I know Google hasn't ever recommended anchor name URLs and anchor blocks, mostly when you have one page site, but I have ran into an organic result with an hyper-link to an anchor name URL. anchor name link There is a proper link and there aren't on the page and the code the words "Jump to". It means Google has put those words there and it has also taken the header of that block as anchor text. Why has Google placed that link? The query is "faqs umbrella company", so I thought that Google has seen "faqs umbrella company" like "what is the most popular faq about umbrella companies?" and therefore perhaps the correct answer could be "Is an umbrella company the only option I have? What are the alternatives?". Although, IMHO the most popular FAQ on Umbrella Companies should always be "what is an umbrella company". Unfortunately, that page is only worthy of third Google organic result page and there is no hint of rich snippet or any kind of conversational/KBT optimisation on its source code. no-rich-snippet Someone has any idea of why Google shows that link and if it's something that we can optimise in our pages? Has anyone else noticed a major increase in Yelp, BBB, etc. results in local SERPs, pushing business websites further down?
Across multiple cities and markets, this seems to be a trend. "Chicago coffee shop" or "Minneapolis hair salon" or "Sacramento car repair" - outside the local 7-pack, virtually every result is Yelp, BBB, Yellowpages, etc. Is this related to algo changes, or simply a result of those national sites pumping major resources into SEO? It just seems to be suddenly far more prevalent than it was even 6 months ago.

Best way of seeing how many links come from individual root domain domains.
Just wondering how best to see this - which tool to use. I'm dealing with a website with several thousand inbound links from around 100 root domains. Thanks in advance, Luke

Did anyone else notice a DA Drop this week?
I have our site + 4 other competitors' sites in my SEOmoz campaigns and all of the DA's dropped by 1 or 2 points. Has anyone else noticed a drop this week? Two months ago, all of these websites also went down 1 or 2 DA points, then some of them came back up a point the next month. What's going on? Thanks

Google.co.uk vs pages from the UK - anyone noticed any changes?
We've started to notice some changes in the rankings of Google UK and Google pages from the UK. Pages from the UK have always typically ranked higher, however it seems like these are slipping, and Google UK pages (pages from the web) are climbing. We've noticed a similar thing happening in the Bing/Yahoo algorithm as well. Just wondered if anyone else has anyone else noticed this? Thanks

Redirected old domain to new, how long before seeing the external links under the new domain?
Before contracting SEO services, my client decided to change his established root domain to one more customer-friendly. Since he had no expertise on board, no redirects were set up until 6 months later. I ran stats right before the old domain was redirected and have a report showing that he had roughly 750 external links from 300 root domains. We redirected the old domain to the new domain in mid Jan 2012. Those external links are still not showing in Open Site Explorer for the new domain. I've tested it a dozen times, and the old domain definitely points to the new domain. How long should it take before the new domain picks up those external links? Should I do anything else to help the process along?
