To merge or not to merge? That is the question.
-
I am planning to do something I never did, and I am wondering if it's really a good idea or not.
I have four websites, all of the same company, each one with a different domain and different content:
- one has been the main official site for 16 years, 200 unique per month, indexed for 134 keywords, Domain Authority 17, 13 linking root domains
- one has been used as the main site from 2003 to 2006, it's focused on a specific business they actually discontinued, still online, no update since 2006, 500 unique per month, indexed for 92 keywords, Domain Authority 13, 8 linking root domains
- another has been a built on 2010 and maintained for less than year, and it's focused on a business they never really started, still online, no update since 2010, 3000 unique per month, indexed for 557 keywords, Domain Authority 25, 84 linking root domains
- a fourth one has been also built on 2010 and focused on a business never really started, still online, no update since 2010, 100 unique per month, indexed for 4 keywords, Domain Authority 6, 3 linking root domains
Each website has traffic and links, all links being natural, they never tried to gain links in any way, they never did on page optimization, they never ever thought about SEO. They are not event interlinked.
So, my idea is to merge all of them, putting websites 2, 3 and 4 as subfolders of the main site and replicating the old content there. Because those sites have traffic, incredibly one of the abandoned sites has 3000 unique per month, while the main site just 200!
My doubts are:
- does it make sense to merge everything from a SEO prospective?
- A part from doing 301 correctly, what else should I be careful to do or not to do?
- website number 4 it's really outdated, content and structure is not easy to merge with the rest, traffic is really small, is it worth spending the time to merge it?
Finally I also have a problem; customer didn't want to merge them, they agreed to, but they don't want visitors of the main site to be able to navigate to the old ones, so once moved and redirected I would have to put them in the sitemap of the main site but avoid linking to them on the actual "main" site.
As far as I know google crawler doesn't like to find pages in sitemaps which are not reachable through a linking path on the website, is that correct? Is that going to make all the merging work useless?
Should I convince the client to at least put small links in the footer or on a page linked from the footer?
-
Thanks for you answer.
The first place google bot goes is the sitemap, yes, but is it true or not that finding a page in the sitemap and not being able to reach the same page when crawling the website makes google devaluate the page juice?
About the footer I would just put a link to each subfolder, so just 3 or 4 links, what I don't know is if small links in the footer are enough to make google bot happy, or if it would still devaluate the page juice of the pages. Since they wouldn't have much interlinkage in the main website.
-
Well, from a business prospective, since site-2 and site-3 are about technologies which could still be used by customers of my client, even if they don't provide them anymore, in my mind they could bring in leads. site-3 is still originating natural links even if they didn't update it in four years, it must still be valuable to someone.
The 301 redirect doesn't scares me for site-2 and site-3 because they are wordpress installation, I will download the content and sitemaps, upload the content and use the sitemaps to generate 1-1 redirect rules with a script, it's not complex.
Site-4 is an application and I have no idea where to start to move it, that's why I now think is better to drop it.
-
Thanks. I think I will combine the three more related and discard the last one, it's traffic is small and they would not care of pennies from adsense.
-
I understand all the websites get traffic and rankings for different keywords. Although, you are stating that some of the services and products provided are no longer active and since that is the case (as stated above a service that never launched) then I would look at the point of keeping the content alive as it will not convert any new clients since that service is not provided. How would you get a return on investment for all the merge work.
Like sureshchowdary said above, making a list of all the pages and doing a 1-1 redirect is a lot of work (believe me I know -> in february 2014 I did the same thing for a client redirecting the entire site to new location (+/- 1000 pages)).
So If I were you I would look at the effort needed to perform all the work, make an estimate in what the investment would be and what would be the return on the work. It might just be wise to decide to add some content to the oldest site and redirect all the links but leave the rest of the content.
Just my 2 cents and for your consideration

I agree. I would not mix diverse topics. But, if they are related, I would combine them as long as the content is meaningful to someone. I would monetize the traffic with adsense or other ads.
-
That was also my concern but all the four websites are related to the same branch of business I would say.
It's a software house basically, site 1 is just about them as a company. Site 2 and site 3 are about old technologies they do not resell/implement anymore. Site 4 is an online webservice to exchange messages anonymously, they actually never launched it. It's the one more distant from what they are doing and I agree with them it really looks unfinished and not so professional.
-
How closely related are the topics of these websites?
Are you mixing fishing, knitting and hydraulic jacks?

Hi Max,
Its good to know that even though the websites are not optimized the keywords are ranking and generating traffic.
1)It does make sense to merge. But all the weight age goes to the 1st website. You need to do a 1-1 mapping of all the url's while redirecting which I think is a big task. As you said the customers didn't want to merge them.
2)When we are doing a 301 redirect for the whole website I don't think see any such things which we need to look after.
3)If the keywords are ranking for the 4th website then definitely its worth redirecting your 4th website.
The first place google bot goes when it enters your website is the sitemap.
Its also not a good practice to put more links in the footer section. Limit the number of links in the footer section.

Question about region codes and Hreflang?
A client (see example above) has accidentally place region codes into the hreflang when the content is intended for all audiences that speak the language. So "fr-fr" should really just be "fr" since those that are "fr-be", "fr-ca", and "fr-ch" should all be getting to the French version of the website too. And there isn't a specific subdirectory for French speakers in Belgium or France or Switzerland, etc. However, when looking at Google Analytics, these region codes don't seem to be stopping those from other regions from getting to the correct landing page. So a user from Belgium is still getting to https://www.example.com/fr/ depsite the "fr-fr" in the hreflang. So question: is it worth adjusting the hreflang to be non-region specific (from

To subdomain or to subfolder, that is the question.
Hi All, So I have a client that has two restaurants that they are wanting two sites for. Right now they have one site for their two locations that ranks pretty well for some bigger keywords for their style of food. With them wanting two sites, i'm struggling on whether we should just build them all within one site and just use separate folders on that site restaurant.com/location1 & restaurant.com/location2 with a landing page sending you to each, or if we should split it into subdomains. The content will be roughly the same, the menus are identical, i think each branch is just owned by a different family member so they want their own site. I keep leaning towards building it all into one site but i'm not sure. Any ideas?

Canonical questions
Hi, We are working on a site that sells lots of variations of a certain type of product. (Car accessories) So lets say there are 5 products but each product will need a page for each car model so we will potentially have a lot of variations/pages. As there are a lot of car models, these pages will have pretty much the same content, apart from the heading and model details. So the structure will be something like this; Product 1 (landing page) Audi (model selection page)
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | davidmaxwell
---Audi A1 (Model detail page)
---Audi A2 (Model detail page)
---Audi A3 (Model detail page) BMW (model selection page)
---BMW 1 Series (Model detail page)
---BMW 3 Series (Model detail page) Product 2 (landing page) Audi (model selection page)
---Audi A1 (Model detail page)
---Audi A2 (Model detail page)
---Audi A3 (Model detail page) BMW (model selection page)
etc
etc The structure is like this as we will be targeting each landing page for AdWords campaigns. As all of these pages could look very similar to search engines, will simply setting up each with a canonical be enough? Is there anything else we should do to ensure Google doesn't penalise for duplicate page content? Any thoughts or suggestions most welcome.

Merging Niche Site
I posted a question about this a while ago, but still haven't pulled the trigger. I have a main site (bobsclothing.com). I also have a EM niche site (i.e shirtsmall.com). It would be more efficient for me to merge these site, because: I would have to manage content, promos, etc. on a single site. In other words, I can focus efforts on 1 site. If I am writing content, I don't have to split the work. I don't have to worry about duplicate content. Right now, if I enter a product URL into copyscape, the other sites is returned for many products. What makes me apprehensive are: The niche site actually ranks for more keywords than the main site, although it has lower revenue. Slightly lower PA, and DA. Niche site ranks top 20 for a profitable keyword that has about 1300 exact match searches. If you include the longer tail versions of the keyword it would be more. If I merge these sites, and do proper 301s (product to product, category to category) how likely is it that main site will still rank for that keyword? Am I likely to end up with a site that has stronger DA? Am I better off keeping the niche site and just focusing content efforts on the few keywords that it can rank well for? I appreciate any advice. If someone has done this, please share your experience. TIA

Question | Blogger, Godaddy, HostGator
If I buy a new domain and do forwarding with masking to my blogger post URL what would happen to the backlinks that were pointing to my blog post exactly? Will the power link back to this new domain or will it stay there? I have a blogger account, a domain from godaddy, and hosting? People are telling me that forwarding with masking is bad for SEO so I should set blogger with godaddy or something like that I don't know. I need a hosting though in order to do that and free ones don't offer changes to the CNAME records? so I got hostgator. I am up to the part where I need to set the records in the CNAME for hostgator but every time I try to list ghs.google as the whatever, it won't work! It keeps telling me the record is already there when this is my FIRST time using this! How can it be there when I haven't even touched it? Please help me
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | 678648631264This is the tutorial im using : http://support.google.com/blogger/bi...381&page=ts.cs I get stuck here: Find the control panel on your domain registrar’s website, and locate your DNS (Domain Name System) settings. In order to link your blog to your custom domain, follow the instructions below to enter your "CNAME" and "A-records."
CNAME
Where it says Name, simply enter "www" and list ghs.google.com as the Host Name. See our detailed instructions on providing CNAMEs for various registrars. If yours isn't listed, or if you run into other difficulties, contact your registrar directly and they can help you out.
A-records (optional)
The following action links your naked domain (example.com) to your actual site (www.example.com). If you skip this step, visitors who leave off the "www" will see an error page.
Enter your domain name in the format example.com, and list the I.P. addresses shown below in the "A" section. You'll need to create four separate A-records which point to four different Google IPs. 216.239.32.21
216.239.34.21
216.239.36.21
216.239.38.21 Could I just leave my forwarding with masking on with my domain + blogger to make everything easier or what? And, is there any benefit in SEO if I don't have an EMD but it's something like this www.General.com/Keyword 1 www.General.com/Keyword 2/Posts/etc0 -
Multiple Keyword Research Questions, Help
Hello , I've been trying for several days to understand how keyword research works for a multi purpose website,I've read guides, articles even some chapters from the book" The Art of Seo" by O'Reilly and still no luck. It seems i can't wrap my head around keyword research, lets say I have a social gaming community website and I'm trying to rank it first on some low competition keywords + some long tail keywords. The website has functions like leaderboards, profiles, events, competitions, etc so it's not actually a news related website but it will have a blog. My website being on the games niche It would imply that I should target words that contain the word "Games" but this word generates millions of searches globally so ranking first its nearly impossible if the website is brand new. This made me pursue generic keywords formed with 2 / 3 words like fresh games, new games, mmorpg games, fps games, etc which still generate lets say 30.000 searches globally each. Due to the different areas of the website like latest game events, latest games competitions, etc I'm confused If i should pursue website specific keywords like latest games events, fresh games events, latest games competitions, upcoming games competitions but these too generate 30.000 global searches each,so... 0.should i use generic keywords or keywords that include site features? So let's say I decide to pursue generic "games" keywords, due to a high competition based on the keyword I decide to go a layer deeper and for the keyword "fresh games" I obtain keywords like** "fresh games 2011,top fresh games 2011, upcoming fresh games** " and thus building a list of 30 keywords that contain " fresh games".If i do this for the rest of the keywords: ** new games, mmorpg games, fps games, etc** I end up with a list of 10.000 keywords or more since each keyword generates other keywords. Is this the correct approach ? since generating 10.000 keywords sounds a lot and I'm getting the feeling that It's not how it supposed to be done, like were would I insert 10.000 keywords? So how do I know which keywords to pick and aim in order to try to get no.1 ranking? and why those? How many keywords should I use? and where should i put them? since it's not a news website so writing a lot of articles isn't an option. Should I focus on 2 words keywords with around 10.000-30.000 seaches or 2 words keywords + long tail keywords with less traffic like 100 - 5000? Is there a guide for the Keyword Analysis Tool since if i enter "fresh new games" i get a 39% keyword difficulty,is that hard to rank? and I don't know what all those color mean since some of them have higher numbers then others that are found at the top and how can i get beat a website that has has rank 10. So hopefully with your help & by some miracle I will finally be able to build a keyword list. Thank you !
