My site was hacked and spammy URLs were injected that pointed out. The issue was fixed, but GWT is still reporting more of these links.
-
Excuse me for posting this here, I wasn't having much luck going through GWT support.
We recently moved our eCommerce site to a new server and in the process the site was hacked. Spammy URLs were injected in, all of which were pointing outwards to some spammy eCommerce retail stores. I removed ~4,000 of these links, but more continue to pile in. As you can see, there are now over 20,000 of these links. Note that our server support team does not see these links anywhere.
I understand that Google doesn't generally view this as a problem. But is that true given my circumstance? I cannot imagine that 20,000 new, senseless 404's can be healthy for my website.
If I can't get a good response here, would anyone know of a direct Google support email or number I can use for this issue?

Hi
Yeah, lets say they use Xrumer.
They hack your site, insert pages of their own, and links on your pages.
They put those urls in text files based on their keyword targets/groups.
They run the software, using those list with their link sources and using their auto insert random url template.
So that pings a 404 to GWT so the 404 shows up there.
If these are pros, they already know that the pages are dead by now, as they confirm links after each run. It just takes a bit more time for GWMT to get notified so you'll see them trickle in.
So you'll see those 404 pages getting links from different dates.
Hope that helps

I don't understand why more spam links would be coming in though. Is it because the spam network doesn't realize that I've removed the injected pages? In other words, are they unknowingly linking to 404s?
-
Since those URLs are already gone after you cleaned it up, you can just mark those as fixed. GWT usually is pretty late with picking those up. I've handled my share of hacked sites, some with invisible links.
If they appear again, then you'll need to find where they are getting through. It's a pain but you have to fully check your files for scripts and encrypted codes.
Aside from those, it's just time. Google will eventually stop showing them.
Good luck Andrew!
PS. You might want to look at some of your pages using Google's cache result. You can see invisible links using that. Just in case you haven't done this part.

Thank you for your response.
I also believe I was hacked through my wordpress. What exactly did you do once you realized the htaccess file was changed? Did you change it back to whatever code was there before?
I already submitted a reconsideration request to Google and it was successful. I no longer have "this site may be hacked" in the SERPs, but I still have thousands of urls pointing to 404 pages.

Samething happened to me a last month due to a securrity break in a pluggin that was part of my wordpress theme.
After hacked the site with injected url and also altering htaccess file (check that out) they changed the htacces file in order that if you enter your url you could see the correct version of your web, but if you enter your website in a google search traffic wen to this spammy viagra stuff pages.
I also recieved a manual action on my site.
What i did:
1- removed the injected files that were creating the spammy urls
2- edited the htacces file locating what code they had changed
3- summited a reconsideration request explaining what it was happening
4- Removed on webmaster tools al url that were spammy created on my site to remove them from google index
After 10 days manual action was removed. But till know i still have spammy links to 404 on my site. This happens because they also hacked other sites and creates like spammy linking networks. Has people start recovering their sites the amount of links to this pages will reduce.
My experience this big amount on 404 it has affected on about 30% of traffic. This traffic has know recovered almost completly and the amount on 404 is reducing with time.
So my conclusion is that this 404 are not healthy but they will be gone with time and your site will recover.

Robots.txt & meta noindex--site still shows up on Google Search
I have set up my robots.txt like this: User-agent: *
Technical SEO | | RoxBrock
Disallow: / and I have this meta tag in my on a Wordpress site, set up with SEO Yoast name="robots" content="noindex,follow"/> I did "Fetch as Google" on my Google Search Console My website is still showing up in the search results and it says this: "A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt" This site has not shown up for years and now it is ranking above my site that I want to rank for this keyword. How do I get Google to ignore this site? This seems really weird and I'm confused how a site with little content, that has not been updated for years can rank higher than a site that is constantly updated and improved.1 -
Abnormally high internal link reported in Google Search Console not matching Moz reports
If I'm looking at our internal link count and structure on Google Search Console, some pages are listed as having over a thousand internal links within our site. I've read that having too many internal links on a page devalues that page's PageRank, because the value is divided amongst the pages it links out to. Likewise, I've heard having too many internal links is just bad in general for SEO. Is that true? The problem I'm facing is determining how Google is "discovering" these internal links. If I'm just looking at one single page reported with, say, 1,350 links and I'm just looking at the code, it may only have 80 or 90 actual links. Moz will confirm this, as well. So why would Google Search Console report different? Should I be concerned about this?

Removed Subdomain Sites Still in Google Index
Hey guys, I've got kind of a strange situation going on and I can't seem to find it addressed anywhere. I have a site that at one point had several development sites set up at subdomains. Those sites have since launched on their own domains, but the subdomain sites are still showing up in the Google index. However, if you look at the cached version of pages on these non-existent subdomains, it lists the NEW url, not the dev one in the little blurb that says "This is Google's cached version of www.correcturl.com." Clearly Google recognizes that the content resides at the new location, so how come the old pages are still in the index? Attempting to visit one of them gives a "Server Not Found" error, so they are definitely gone. This is happening to a couple of sites, one that was launched over a year ago so it doesn't appear to be a "wait and see" solution. Any suggestions would be a huge help. Thanks!!

Find all old links from a site to 301
We worked on this site a while ago - http://www.electric-heatingsupplies.co.uk/ Whilst we did a big 301 redirect exercise, I wanted to check that we "got" all of them. Is there a historical way I can check all the old indexed links to make sure they correlate to the new links? Thanks!!

Keep getting random broken links pointed at our website
Over the past 6 months I've noticed an increase of 404 errors being picked up by Google Webmaster Tools. When I look at the errors table and review these errors the links are invariable made up likes being generated from what looks like scraper sites or sites with search results embedded into them. Below are some examples of them. Broken Link URL Generating the Link www.mysite.com/rwickenhauser http://www.webstatsdomain.com
Technical SEO | | adamlcasey
www.mysite.com/guest http://www.webstatsdomain.com
www.mysite.com/windows http://www.webstatsdomain.com
www.mysite.com/..app http://213.174.143.40/
www.mysite.com/ht.. http://de.aguea.com/ None of these pages exist on our website.
So do I need to setup redirects for these or can they be ignored?0 -
Should I ask third pages to erase their links pointing at my site?
Good Morning Seomoz Fans, let me explain what is going on: A surfing site has included a link to my Site in their Footer. apparently, this could be good for my site, but as It has nothing to do with my site, I ask myself if I should tell them to erase it. Site A (Surfing Site) is pointing at Site B (Marketing Site) on their Footer. So Site B is receiving backlinks from every single page on Site A. But Site B has nothing to do with Site A: Different Markets. Should I ask them to erase the link on their footer as Surfing people will not find my Marketing Site interesting? Thanks in advance.

Unnatural Link Warning No Longer Showing in GWT?
Hi, We recently took on a new client that had been hit by the recent Google updates. After having a really good look at their analytics and their link profile it looked like they had been hit with over-optimisation of anchor text. Over the last month or so we have been working to remove a pile of links that contain their main keyword starting with the easiest to remove and the lowest quality. At the same time we have been building links using sematic keywords and junk anchor text in a bid to dilute the ration of main anchor text within their profile. We have a timetable of tasks drawn-up which we are working through, at the end of the timetable when all tasks were complete we planned to write a very nice reconsideration request to Mr Google. I have logged in to Google Webmaster Tools this morning and I have noticed that the 'Unnatural Links' notice has been removed from that domain. Does anyone know if this signifies anything? We haven't sent a reconsideration request to google yet. Thanks.
