Google Places Duplicate Listings
-
Hey Mozzers-
I know the basic process for handling duplicate listings, but I just want to make sure and ask because this one is a little sensitive.
I have a client with a claimed and verified listings page, which is here:
http://maps.google.com/maps/place?q=chambers+and+associates&hl=en&cid=9065936543314453461
There is also another listing (which I have not claimed yet) here:
http://maps.google.com/maps/place?q=dr.+george+chambers&hl=en&cid=14758636806656154330
The first listing has 0 reviews, where the 2nd unverified listing has 12 fantastic 5 star reviews. We can all agree that if I can get these two listings to merge, his general listing will perform much better than it already is (the first listing has about 200 actions per months).
So, what is the best way to merge these two without losing any reviews and without suspending my places account? Thanks in advance!
Ian

True it is techinically against google's TOS. but i think that relates more to people who are doing it in a malicious way. I think everything we have explained above is legit, even if he temporarily holds two of the same location in his places account.
If they actually got ahold of him to complain about it, it would probably be useful, because he could state his story and they would resolve the issue quicker.
But it's not like that would ever happen. Google staff are way to preoccupied to approach businesses on a case by case basis like that.

It is against Google's TOS to have more than 1 Places listing. If (as is the case in some countries) there is no 'Report A Problem' link on the Place page, you may (as suggested by a Google Places rep (I have the link somewhere) claim the duplicate and then delete the undesirable one: follow the steps as Storwell Self Storage has laid out.
If the Places page/s is in the USA, you'll want to follow Jacob's suggestions, as well as #5 from Storwell Self Storage
- wait a couple days, if that listing is still showing up in the search results, go to its places page, and click the Report A Problem link, and select “Place has another listing”. If you can, include a link to your claimed place page in the comments section.
Here is the link to the Google Places help page for duplicate issues:

-
claim the second listing, the good one.
-
fill out the profile to 100% complete (5 videos, 10 pictures, categories, all the works)
-
make sure that this new listing is now set to active in your places acount (you should now have 2 listings in your places account)
-
find the listing with no reviews inside your places account and click **"**Remove this listing from my Google Places account".
-
wait a couple days, if that listing is still showing up in the search results, go to its places page, and click the Report A Problem link, and select “Place has another listing”. If you can, include a link to your claimed place page in the comments section.

I actually just got done with a similar issue.
The best way to take care of this, in my humble opinion, is to delete the claimed (and inferior) listing. Do this first.

Then, claim the better listing like normal.

Google is mixing subdomains. What can we do?
Hi! I'm experiencing something that's kind of strange for me. I have my main domain let's say: www.domain.com. Then I have my mobile version in a subdomain: mobile.domain.com and I also have a german version of the website de.domain.com. When I Google my domain I have the main result linking to: www.domain.com but then Google mixes all the domains in the sites links. For example a Sing in may be linking mobile.domain.com, a How it works link may be pointing to de.domain.com, etc What's the solution? I think this is hurting a lot my position cause google sees that all are the same domain when clearly is not. thanks!!

What Sources to use to compile an as comprehensive list of pages indexed in Google?
As part of a Panda recovery initiative we are trying to get an as comprehensive list of currently URLs indexed by Google as possible. Using the site:domain.com operator Google displays that approximately 21k pages are indexed. Scraping the results however ends after the listing of 240 links. Are there any other sources we could be using to make the list more comprehensive? To be clear, we are not looking for external crawlers like the SEOmoz crawl tool but sources that would be confidently allow us to determine a list of URLs currently hold in the Google index. Thank you /Thomas

Google indexing issue?
Hey Guys, After a lot of hard work, we finally fixed the problem on our site that didn't seem to show Meta Descriptions in Google, as well as "noindex, follow" on tags. Here's my question: In our source code, I am seeing both Meta descriptions on pages, and posts, as well as noindex, follow on tag pages, however, they are still showing the old results and tags are also still showing in Google search after about 36 hours. Is it just a matter of time now or is something else wrong?

Duplicate Content Question
My client's website is for an organization that is part of a larger organization - which has it's own website. We were given permission to use content from the larger organization's site on my client's redesigned site. The SEs will deem this as duplicate content, right? I can "re-write" the content for the new site, but it will still be closely based on the original content from the larger organization's site, due to the scientific/medical nature of the subject material. Is there a way around this dilemma so I do not get penalized? Thanks!

Duplicate content for swatches
My site is showing a lot of duplicate content on SEOmoz. I have discovered it is because the site has a lot of swatches (colors for laminate) within iframes. Those iframes have all the same content except for the actual swatch image and the title of the swatch. For example, these are two of the links that are showing up with duplicate content: http://www.formica.com/en/home/dna.aspx?color=3691&std=1&prl=PRL_LAMINATE&mc=0&sp=0&ots=&fns=&grs= http://www.formica.com/en/home/dna.aspx?color=204&std=1&prl=PRL_LAMINATE&mc=0&sp=0&ots=&fns=&grs= I do want each individual swatch to show up in search results and they currently are if you search for the exact swatch name. Is the fact that they all have duplicate content affecting my individual rankings and my domain authority? What can I do about it? I can't really afford to put unique content on each swatch page so is there another way to get around it? Thanks!

What are the different tactics for getting ranked/ included in Google finance searches such as http://www.google.com/finance/company_news?q=NASDAQ:ADBE
I don't know what ranking factors they are using for this feed. The results vary greatly from a search done at google.com or google.com/news and google.com/finance I'm working with a website that regularly publishes finance-related news and currently gets traffic from google finance. I'm wondering what we can do to optimize our news articles to possibly show more prominently or more often. Thanks

Google Places optimisation for service franchise, 150 franchisees with no physical addresses?
So we have a client who is a plumbing franchise with about 150 franchisees across the country. Because its a plumbing franchise the businesses don't have street addresses (apart from the franchisee home addresses but we don't want to use those) We used to have bulk uploaded listings for the franchise locations and used the GPO address is the suburb/city as the address and got away with this fine for years. Google has copped onto this and asked for reverification of the listings by post now. So my question is what's the best way to optimise places for 150+ locations. As a quick fix, we're going to add a new places location as the master franchise HQ office (address exists). We can then add all the suburbs/areas serviced into this location which may or may not show up for local searches in those areas. We could potentially verify all listings by mail by using private mailboxes but mail verify on a mass scale like that is likely to be flaky not to mention an admin nightmare. Does anyone have an experience with this and how they got around it?
