Duplicate Version of My Website
-
Hello Again,
Looking for a little help to help me understand what exactly is going on here.
Ive taken over maintenance of a website and have so far fixed a lot of issues. ahrefs has shown me that a second version of my companies website exists that exists at a second url. This second website is linked to the actual company website like I haven't seen before.
www(dot)#(dot)co(dot)uk is the main company website. But a second accessible version exists and is accessible at www(dot)#(dot)co(dot)uk
The instruments version is a direct copy and all of the links point directly to my main site. Any changes I make on the main version are automatically applied to the other version. It shows up as a SPAM back link on moz as all of the link points to my website etc
Ideally in my mind, the instruments version homepage should simply re-direct to the main homepage to solve this "duplicate content and spammy backlink" issue however, the instruments version is the same suffix that all our company emails work with.
Basically, HELP lol. I have no understanding of how this is set up, and the best way in which to deal and if it could affect anything such as company emails.

Cheers Dirk,
I will look to implement this fix, as always you've been great!

Hi,
The reason why you have these duplicates is because the different domains you have all point to the same server - as a result the content is available on all these different url's.
To solve this - choose one principal domain (the one you want to keep)
Option 1: Edit the htaccess file and redirect the other url's to the main domain: to do this add these lines
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.example.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]The second line checks if the request url is has the form www.example.com
If not, the 3rd line is rewriting it to example.com
Suppose the site is called using www.test.com/article.htm - it fails the test on line 2 - it will be rewritten to www.example.com/article.htm
Option 2: Alternative is to choose "domain forwarding" - this a standard option most registrars provide to forward a domain to another domain (check with your registrar how to do this - make sure you choose a 301 type redirect & that the url changes to the destination url)
Hope this helps,
Dirk
Replace www.example.com by your main site & you should be fine. The emails won't be affected - that's something which is defined on

Thanks for the reply patrick,
As a follow up, how would I go about re-directing these sites? Their content changes whenever I update the main site so i presume they are linked somehow. I have access to the root folder on the main site and cannot find any reference to them there.
If they are being hosted else-ware how is the content being updated immediatly

Hi there
You actually have a third site as well: http://www.atp-instrumentation.com/
You have a couple of options:
-
You can redirect to the two side sites to the main
-
Conduct a backlink audit for all sites
-
Correct good links
-
Remove bad links
-
Update your listings if these side sites have listings
-
You could put canonical tag on the side sites to the main site pages
-
I would still recommend a backlink audit
-
You could noindex, nofollow the two side sites
Whatever you do - make sure that update your backlinks and listings so that they are consistent. Also, when it comes to your company email addresses, this shouldn't be an issue, but if you decided to change your company emails, you could set up routing and/or forwarding to a new domain email address.
This will take discussions with your company and web development team as I am sure there are marketing materials out with email addresses and other information. It definitely goes beyond the opinions in this Q+A thread.
Like I said, having a different email address than your domain is not really that big of a deal, but there are options there as well.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Redirecting an Entire Website?
Is it best to redirect an old website to a new website page by page to like pages or just the entire site all at once to the home page of the new site? I do have about 10 good pages on the site that are worth directing to corresponding pages on the new site. Just trying to figure out what is going to preserve the most link juice. Thanks for the help!

Duplicate Page Content
Hello, After crawling our site Moz is detecting high priority duplicate page content for our product and article listing pages, For example http://store.bmiresearch.com/bangladesh/power and http://store.bmiresearch.com/newzealand/power are being listed as duplicate pages although they have seperate URLs, page titles and H1 tags. They have the same product listed but I would have thought the differentiation in other areas would be sufficient for these to not be deemed as duplicate pages. Is it likely this issue will be impacting on our search rankings? If so are there any recommendations as to how this issue can be overcome. Thanks

How to Handle Website Merge?
We are a law firm and have another law firm merging into ours. Our branding will remain the same, but I am trying to figure out how to best handle their website transition. Should we link it to ours (although their PR & page authority are not significant) or should I map each page to ours with similar content with a redirect? MY main concerns are not damaging our website's SEO by doing something search engine's would frown on and also to try to take advantage of any organic traffic or referral traffic. Or maybe some combination - link homepage with added verbage that attorney is now with our firm and a link and redirect the sub-pages? I look forward to thoughts from anyone who might have experience with this type to issue. Thanks in advance! JulieHow t

Cached version of website
Hi, Upon checking the text cache view of our home page, I noticed the mobile menu links are also coming in text format which looks weird. Please see: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:indialetsplay.com&biw=1366&bih=638&noj=1&strip=1 Our coder told us that he has created separate menu i.e. one version for the desktop and one for the mobile version. Anyway, the reason the coder created a different menu for mobile in order to support the design requirements. Does the duplicating the menu good for on page SEO? Give the best solution for handling it.

Many Errors on E-commerce website mainly Duplicate Content - Advice needed please!
Hi Mozzers, I would need some advice on how to tackle one of my client’s websites. We have just started doing SEO for them and after moz crawled the e-commerce it has detected: 36 329 Errors – 37496 warnings and 2589 Notices all going up! Most of the errors are due to duplicate titles and page content but I cannot identify where the duplicate pages come from, these are the links moz detected of the Duplicate pages (unfortunately I cannot add the website for confidentiality reasons) : • www.thewebsite.com/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=233&products_per_00&products_per_2&products_per_2&products_per_2&page=2 • www.thewebsite.com/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=233&products_per_00=&products_per_00&products_per_2&products_per_2&products_per_2&page=2 • www.thewebsite.com/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=233&products_per_00=&products_per_00&products_per_2&page=2 • www.thewebsite.com/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=233&products_per_2=&products_per_00&page=2 • www.thewebsite.com/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=233&products_per_00&products_per_00&products_per_00&products_per_00&page=2 With these URLs it is quite hard to identify which pages need to be canonicalize. And this is jsut an example out of thousands on this website. If anyone would have any advice on how to fix this and how to tackle 37496 errors on a website like this that would be great. Thank you for your time, Lyam

Duplicate index.php/webpage pages on website. Help needed!
Hi Guys, Having a really frustrating problem with our website. It is a Joomla 1.7 site and we have some duplicate page issues. What is happening is that we have a webpage, lets say domain.com/webpage1 and then we also have domain.com/index.php/webpage1. Google is seeing these as duplicate pages and is causing me some real SEO problems. I have tried setting up a 301 redirect but it wn't let me redirect /index.php/webpage1 to /webpage1. Anyone have any ideas or plugins that can be used to sort this out? Any help will be really appreciated! Matt.

Duplicate Content issue
I have been asked to review an old website to an identify opportunities for increasing search engine traffic. Whilst reviewing the site I came across a strange loop. On each page there is a link to printer friendly version: http://www.websitename.co.uk/index.php?pageid=7&printfriendly=yes That page also has a link to a printer friendly version http://www.websitename.co.uk/index.php?pageid=7&printfriendly=yes&printfriendly=yes and so on and so on....... Some of these pages are being included in Google's index. I appreciate that this can't be a good thing, however, I am not 100% sure as to the extent to which it is a bad thing and the priority that should be given to getting it sorted. Just wandering what views people have on the issues this may cause?
