Keywords: Anybody know how to find which keywords your competitors are converting?

Hi Guys
I'm ranking on page 1 for some pretty good keywords, in NZ and 1 for australia, slowing making it up the ranks for USA, however I can see that my competitors only use PPC, is there anyway I can see which keywords they are targeting and getting the most from?
I'm now thinking perhaps I'm going for the wrong keywords: I don't have any access to SEM rush, and gathered that was one way to find these.
Any ideas around this, or perhaps how to find which keywords I should be better targeting.

While it won't show you what is converting, check out SEMRush. It's a great tool that will show you what competitors are ranking for, the estimated traffic they are getting for that keyword, as well as the landing page.
The beauty with this tool is that you can research from both a SEO and paid perspective.

I use intuition and combine the following:-

The two primary tools I use are "Semrush" & "Similarweb" - I then cross check with various of the Moz tools. Combining the excel spread sheets of semrush & similarweb is fascinating and often provides significant keyword signals.
That said it is more than keywords it is their overall strategy if successful or above you needs to be understood.
Source Code:-
Review their source code - it is gold for finding how a company operates. ie If they use Optimizely they are probably getting traffic but not converting well. Hence focused on the user experience. So it maybe the same problem as yourself... non-conversion. If they are using Bounce Media - they have alot of money to be spent on paid but have no internal expertise and are are hoping volume will succeed. Lucky dip. So forget them.
Google:-
Most SEO companies spend their time bragging about a client or a success on their blog or website. They often give away insights - % numbers, in short gold for competitors or for to learn about a competitor. I often I find the best insights including keywords or areas of focus from combining source code and then reviewing the blogs or customer stories on the SEO companies websites.

Find out who the Competitors Digital head, or Marketing head have in their connections - again often the people they join agencies or people within - then they detail in their profiles "their strategies". People are lazy and generally repetitive ie they use the strategy once and then repeat it with different companies. Once you know the strategy then it is easy to understand what they do to drive traffic. How they are going to chase it.
The Interview
This is my personal favorite (may get me moz blacklisted) - but just go in for an interview with your competitor - so if they offer up a job, send in a resume and go for the job. Then all I do is ask 100 questions... What is their most important keyword! They will tell you...
Overall hard work, alot of fun. Relentless never give up until the competitor is crushed! Any questions please feel free to ask...

The keyword someone is converting on is the big question in any business. And it is also dependend on the vendor. If you are trying to sell high end stuff. Advertizing with "cheap" may be the converting keyword for your competitor, but not for you.
What you can do is extensive keyword research. Try to find a great number of keywords based on your knowledge from you business. use ubersuggest and keyword planner ( do not kick keywords out, you want many!)
Then run all these keywords against google organic and paid. Check for what keywords your competitors are paying. (us a tool like Advanced Webranking)
Always keep thinking for yourself! Some competitors might not have their campaign in order so they spend money on everything.
You could also put the keywords in the keyword planner and see how much is being paid suggested by the keyword planner.
But all this is still guestimation. The keyword planner is not that good and reliable. you will have to test for yourself using adwords. if your adwords budget is limited, limit it to a specific area and extrapolate the results to the rest of your countries.

How can I find the redirect that removes special parameter from Adwords?
My main problem is Google Analytics doesn't show data from Google Adwords because a redirect in my site removes the special parameter(gclid) supplied by Adwords. Here's an email from one of Google Adwords representative: "When I reviewed your website, I found that a redirect set up on your site is removing auto-tagging information from your URLs. Auto-tagging automatically adds a parameter to the end of each of your AdWords destination URLs in order to identify visitors as AdWords referrals. The tag captures keyword, campaign, ad content information, and your ad's position when a user clicked it. The parameter used in auto-tagging is called "gclid." However, due to your website's redirect, the "gclid" parameter is being removed from the URL. As a result, Google Analytics is unable to properly track visitors reaching your site through AdWords. We suggest contacting your webmaster to append the "gclid" parameter to the redirected URL. If this isn't possible, you may want to consider removing the use of the redirect." Thanks in advance!

What's the most effective web marketing tactic you've seen or used that very few people know about?
I wanted to start a thread to share some of the really cool marketing tactics I've seen on the web that I think few folks are using, AND ask the community here what you've seen, too! Some of my favorite undiscovered or less-used tactics include: Making smart use of bios for conferences, events, interviews, etc. where folks ask you or your team members for a "bio" and you get to control the links, link targets, and anchor text. This is super powerful in my experience, so long as you have a moderately strong profile or regular participation in this type of stuff. Price anchoring on conversion pages, e.g. http://www.trackur.com/options - note how they start with the highest price to help "anchor" the audience to bigger numbers. A great principle of psychology in action. Using re-marketing to draw people to content rather than just purchase/conversion pages. The effectiveness of these is, I've heard, dramatically higher than the usual re-marketing campaigns that take you to a squeeze or purchase page. I can't share the example I'm thinking of, unfortunately, but I'd urge you to try it! Get more social shares and clicks by SHARING MORE THAN ONCE! A lot of folks feel like they are burdening their audience on Twitter/Facebook/G+ or frustrating them if they post multiple times, when in fact, very, very few of your followers are online at any given time. I've tested this myself and I get almost no negative feedback but can triple or more the number of shares/+1s/likes/visits/etc I get just by sharing 2-3X! The key is not to be too repetitive or annoying, and to acknowledge past shares (at least for me). e.g. I'll say "my blog post from last night on XYZ" and get a ton more clicks. What are your favorites? Please share!

Does anyone have a form solution which would allow for specific website visitor information (keywords, path, etc...from Google Analytics), to be passed to a form submitted by that user which could be passed to a Zoho CRM lead record?

Shorter checkout form converts better? Or can it be harmful?
I've frequently read that the shorter the checkout form the better. My checkout form has the following fields: First name Last name Email Username Password Retype password Card number Card expiration date CVV code Billing street Billing city Billing state Billing zip Here's the thing. Since it's a web-app, I don't need the "billing address" as I'm not physically shipping them anything. Should I remove it? The no-brainer answer seems to be "yes", but I'm wondering if folks don't see any billing address fields, it may look suspicious. Conversions for having it and not don't seem to make much difference, so I suppose I'm looking for some tie-breaker opinions. The "password" and "retype password" fields could be eliminated by emailing the user's a system-generated password. But once again, could a user see this as odd or suspicious and then abandon? Even if I tell them I'll be emailing them a password? They could be sensitive thinking we'd email the wrong email address due to system error or their own typo. I could also eliminate the CVV and not validate against that. But once again, could a user seeing the CVV gone become wary? As much as I'd like to have "guest checkout' it's not feasible. The app is tied to a logged in account, which would also make eliminating the "username" impossible. Based on all the above, I could trim down the form considerably, but would I be doing more harm than good? I could A/B test it, but I don't believe I have a sufficient number of users to test against. Everything I buy, physical or online app, has an address field, so perhaps folks are accustomed to filling out this stuff and I should just keep it to align with user expectations? Thanks.

Which Survey Tools Have You Used? (or know of?)
I'm looking for a website survey tool so I can get more targeted feedback from my users. I've looked at a few (4Q, KISSInsights) so far but I think I might need something more robust. There are specific actions that users are taking on our websites that we would like to investigate deeper so I need a tool that can either only survey users who perform that action (users who bounce, users who enter via a specific page, users who visit a landing page but don't convert, etc) or at least let me segment after the fact so I can identify feedback from a specific type of user. I would appreciate any specific tools that you know of that can accomplish this type of targeting. You don't even need to describe it, just provide a link and I'll give you a thumbs up. Thanks

"How did you find out about us" accuracy research?
This is more of a conversion and usability question than an SEO question. Does anyone know if there's any comprehensive research about the accuracy of the well-known "How did you find out about us" question in web forms? I need to convince a customer that they shouldn't put the question in their form, at least not the way they do now. I hope someone can refer me to a credible online source / article about this subject?
