When Content creation isn't an option...
-
I currently work as an SEO/SEO in training. Oftentimes I get projects that require me to look at well established websites of big brands, the kind one would assume put a lot of effort into their sites, and make SEO changes. Additionally they want "actionable" changes that can be made on the fly so content creation, and most linkbuilding, is usually out of the question. Does this limit me to just changing meta titles and descriptions? What if all that seems alright too?

^ This! Great stuff Linda, as always!

You describe yourself as an SEO/SEO in training. So perhaps either SEO is something your organization is just starting to look into, or perhaps you are just being given the more basic assignments. That is perfectly OK. In fact good on-page SEO is one of the main building blocks for everything more advanced.
Moz has lots of articles on basic SEO (like this one on easy wins), so read some of those (even if you know a lot, this can help fill in any gaps) and go through your site making sure all the basics are covered (are canonicals being correctly implemented?). Moz's page grader can help with this.
Looking at successful sites is a good way to get ideas, but keep in mind they may be doing things that may work for them, but might not be a good fit for you. Don't go making large-scale changes till you have tested them.
As you go along, keep track of what else you would change if you could and why, and keep others informed. As your SEO efforts start to pay off, people will be more willing to listen.

Hi there
No content creation or link building at all? Do they want to do any brand building or community nurturing? What's their social like?
I would be interested to hear some ideas from the group here. If you are SEO and limited in what you are able to do, at that point I would say, check the following:
- Crawl issues
- PageSpeed
- Metas & tagging
- Backlink audit
- Internal & external link checks
- Search Console issues
- Mobility issues
- Authority metrics
I would just keep tabs and make sure that nothing falls apart - if you're limited to that, you're limited to that. But I would also make sure, to get buy in, that you provide them benchmarks and information about how if they DID create content and did natural link building, that their SEO efforts would be so much more fruitful. Like a chat to show "If we did do content creation and proper distribution for ________ keywords/queries" and "If we did not do content creation and proper distribution for ________ keywords/queries".
Usually showing competitive analysis in that case and their performance will help sell the idea quicker.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Does using Yoast variables for meta content overwrite any pages that already have custom meta content?
The question is about the Yoast plugin for WP sites. Let's say I have a site with 200 pages and custom meta descriptions / title tags already in place for the top 30 pages. If I use the Yoast variable tool to complete meta content for the remaining pages (and make my Moz issue tracker look happier), will that only affect the pages without custom meta descriptions or will it overwrite even the pages with the custom meta content that I want? In this situation, I do want to keep the meta content that is already in place on select pages. Thanks! Zack

Duplicate Page Content
Hi, I am new to the MOZ Pro community. I got the below message for many of my pages. We have a video site so all content in the page except the video link would be different. How can i handle such pages. Can we place adsense AD's on these pages? Duplicate Page Content Code and content on this page looks similar or identical to code and content on other pages on your site. Search engines may not know which pages are best to include in their index and rankings. Common fixes for this issue include 301 redirects, using the rel=canonical tag, and using the Parameter handling tool in Google Webmaster Central. For more information on duplicate content, visit http://moz.com/learn/seo/duplicate-content. Please help me to know how to handle this.. Regards

Fading in content above the fold on window load
Hi, We'd like to render a font stack from Typekit and paint a large cover image above the fold of our homepage after document completion. Since asynchronously loading anything generally looks choppy, we fade in the affected elements when it's done. Sure, it gives a much smoother feeling and fast load times, but I have a concern about SEO. While Typekit loads, h1, h2 and the page's leading paragraph are sent down the wire with an invisible style (but still technically exist as static html). Even though they appear to a user only milliseconds later, I'm concerned that a search engine's initial request is met with a page whose best descriptive assets are marked as invisible. Both UX and SEO have high value to our business model, so we're asking for some perspective to make the right kind of trade off. Our site has a high domain authority compared to our competition, and sales keyword competition is high. Will this UX improvement damage our On-Page SEO? If so and purely from an SEO perspective, roughly how serious will the impact be? We're eager to hear any advice or comments on this. Thanks a lot.

Ecommerce: content on category pages
I have to optimize some online Shops and after Panda I really don't know what to think about thin content on product overview pages anymore... used to be that we could improve our rankings easily just by adding 1-2 sentences on such a page. This always worked for non-overly competitive terms. Now It feels like it doesn't work any longer, but I couldn't put my finger on it and I don't have the resources to test. Here's an example of what I mean: http://www.geschenkidee.ch/wandtattoos/aus_aller_welt.html

I would add max. 3 lines of text directly over the product thumbnails. What do you think? Is it worth adding some text on a product overview page or do I not even have to bother post-Panda?0
