Migration to https
-
Hi there,
For several reasons we consider to switch from http to https. My question about this:
- Does this change impact organic search results since the URL changes? Is a simple 301 on the highest level enough to keep all of our positions with every page?
Are there any other possible issues we might think about before deciding?
I'm talking about a webshop with over 50k indexed pages and lots of running marketing channels all setted up based on the http URL structure.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Kevin & TorontoV,
Thanks for your responses, and your warning signs concerning a migration to https. We recently launched a new website and we are going to 'migrate' this one first before taking any action on our main webshop. Since we had'nt received any backlinks until now on the new domain, there is no thread for this one.
@Kevin: I'll definitely follow your advice not migrating until Google gives a countdown message for our main domain.
Thanks again!
Marcel

Ey Kevin, we experienced the same thing. our blog traffic got decimated after moving to https and I can see some other sites that did the move and also went into instant nosedive in Semrush. How are the results now?
we are considering moving the blog back.
Marcel, you too. did you do the move and what were your results?
I have a hunch that it is not the "positive" thing all the preachers claim it is.

Patrick, everybody should definitely check external links. We had hundreds of linking domains to our site, but after the switch to HTTPS we lost them all. Google now shows only one single linking domain in GA. Our rankings for performing key words have dropped six to ten spots from our page one 1-4 rankings in less than a month. Indexed pages went from nearly 300 to only six in the same time. Structured data records show a drop from nearly 220 to only 17.
Since Google recommends this, we'll give this another month or two, but if this Google recommendation switch to HTTPS doesn't start showing positive results, we'll surely switch back. My recommendation for now is to only use HTTPS for pages that transmit sensitive data.
Marcel, wait until Google gives the countdown notice to HTTPS like they did with mobile before you migrate your whole site.
Background: I run a Magento 1.9.2/WordPress 4.2.3 multilingual site on LEMP with fine-tuned Google PageSpeed module, Magento FPC on dedicated Memcached instance, and Redis session caching. I know what I'm doing here, but if anyone has suggestions please do share. https://www.88k.com.tw

Hi Andy & Jonathan,
Thanks again. I'm going to use this information when we are ready to migrate.
Cheers,

Hi Marcel,
301s can be done in the htaccess, just make sure as Patrick noted above that your site does not link to http version but directly to the https. You will want to avoid redirecting people from one version to another without need.
Another thing that might be important. Webmaster tools might require you to add another property as if I'm not mistaken it considers http and https as separate entities, it will be good to set it up and monitor both versions to notice that you don't have strange errors during and/or after the migration.

Is the htaccess code enough and does it fix a correct 301 redirect?
You also wouldn't specify a direct 301 when forwarding http to https. You can read about this within the Apache wiki here.

Hi Andy & Jonathan,
Thanks for your response. This helps me a lot :).
Actually we do a lot of 3rd party advertising. I realize that we need to change all scripts but also URL's in tools of 3rd parties. This will be an important process I need to execute carefully.
Is the htaccess code enough and does it fix a correct 301 redirect?
Tnx!

Hi there
Along with the great points above, I would check your internal links, as well as your sitemap, to make sure URLs now reflect the https:// structure. Don't worry about updating your external backlinks.
If you have any major structure or URL structure changes, I recommend reading this migration guide.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Hi Marcel,
A switch to https shouldn't hurt but would most likely have a positive impact on your baseline. Which is significantly more important than any loss in traffic. That said if you do the strategy properly and you redirect all the pages to the equivalent in https it should be fine (assuming you are not changing URLs and/or content).
What you might want to be wary of is the following.
1. Make sure that your CMS is able to automatically serve all your assets in https. So if you have images which are linked directly with
http://domain.com/image.jpg
you'd have to run a script to change the http into an https.2. Any third party scripts / images also need to be run over https. As you have a web shop I don't think you're doing some kind of third party advertising but check in case you have any other http content.
Any of the above two will mark your site as unsafe, which will deter visitors and possibly be a negative flag to google.
Good luck on the migration.

Hi Marcel,
Please have a look at this similar post here. You will find lots of useful information.

****Does this change impact organic search results since the URL changes? ****
In theory, it should be a positive move. Last year Google advised this was to be a new positive ranking signal.
Is a simple 301 on the highest level enough to keep all of our positions with every page?
I would advise you do this through htaccess. The code below should work fine for you. However, add it and then do your testing.
RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R,L]
Are there any other possible issues we might think about before deciding?
Check how internal images are referenced and don't continue to point to http. The same goes with external resources like Google Fonts.

Http to https for large ecommerce - our steps taken (any others recommended?)
**Here is the message from our technical team for the http to https migration; are there any other http to https migration steps recommended? ** Http to https migration steps (for this large ecommerce site): We implemented HTTPS (HTTP over TLS) protocol today (5/4/2017). Applied a patch to ensure that HTTPS pages did not have NoIndex, NoFollow and tested before and after . Added new IIS HTTPS Redirect to enforce HTTPS from HTTP and changed others, including the WWW redirect Changed HTTPS only for Cookies as required as per new PCI vulnerabilities Changed the Basepage HTML template to use Relative Paths or Absolute URLs with HTTPS only (to prevent mixed content) Created and ran a SQL Script to cleanup 16 tables from HTTP to HTTPS (about 20,000 of them, including internal URL links, site settings, etc) Ran Google Sitemap Generator to create new sitemaps with HTTPS Added new HTTPS instance of the site into Webmaster Tools, then added verification code to master page, verified and then submitted the sitemaps to Search Console (QUESTION: will historical data in Google Console/ WMT be preserved for https?) **Follow up steps for http to https migration for large ecommerce: ** From this point forward, to avoid “mixed content”, the Marketing team must use either Relative Paths or Absolute Paths with HTTPS only in any customization (i.e. Basepage) or any new link, such as created in Content Management (i.e. Long Description). Any mixed content will make the website look not secure to customers and search engine spiders – so it is very important to be disciplined and diligent about this. Contact Salesforce to change the protocol to HTTPS only. Meanwhile, to prevent mixed content, we put in a temporary custom javascript change as workaround – but this should not be permanent especially as to the next upgrade will remove it – so we need Saleforce to make a change ASAP. We did not change Blog site (on sub domain), but we should even though it is only a Content site because it will not be signaled as Secure. This means we need to have someone make the changes to WordPress to enforce HTTPS and then change any links. In terms of impact to page ranking due to Google’s treatment of HTTPS over HTTP and due to some impact to page speed – we will need to monitor closely to see how indexing, organic traffic and page ranking goes and take any additional actions as necessary.

Switching site from http to https. Should I do entire site?
Good morning, As many of you have read, Google seems to have confirmed that they will give a small boost to sites with SSL certificates this morning. So my question is, does that mean we have to switch our entire site to https? Even simple information pages and blog posts? Or will we get credit for the https boost as long as the sensitive parts of our site have it? Anybody know? Thanks in advance.

Https and 404 code that goes into htaccess
The 404 error code we put into htaccess files for our websites does not work correctly for our https site. We recently changed one of our http sites to https. When we went to create a 404.html page for it by creating an htaccess folder with the 404 error code in it, once we uploaded the file all of our webpages were displaying incorrectly, as if the css was not attached. The 404 code we used works successfully for our other 404.html pages for our other sites (www.telfordinc.com/404.html). However, it does not work for the https site. Below is the 404 error code we are using for our https site (currently not uploaded until pages display correctly) ErrorDocument 404 /404-error.html RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$ RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www.)?privatemoneyhardmoneyloan.com/.*$ [NC] RewriteRule .(gif|jpg|js|css)$ - [F] Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.privatemoneyhardmoneyloan.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.privatemoneyhardmoneyloan.com/$1 [R=301,L] So we want to know if there is a different 404 error code that goes into the htaccess file for an https vs. http? Appreciate your feedback on this issue

Http to https - is a '302 object moved' redirect losing me link juice?
Hi guys, I'm looking at a new site that's completely under https - when I look at the http variant it redirects to the https site with "302 object moved" within the code. I got this by loading the http and https variants into webmaster tools as separate sites, and then doing a 'fetch as google' across both. There is some traffic coming through the http option, and as people start linking to the new site I'm worried they'll link to the http variant, and the 302 redirect to the https site losing me ranking juice from that link. Is this a correct scenario, and if so, should I prioritise moving the 302 to a 301? Cheers, Jez

Best practice for eCommerce site migration, should I 301 redirect or match URLs on new site
Hi Guys, I have been struggling with this one for quite some time. I am no SEO expert like many of you, rather just a small business owner trying to do the right thing, so forgive me if I say something that makes no sense 🙂 I am moving our eCommerce store from one platform to another, in the process the store is getting a massive face lift. The part I am struggling with is whether I should keep my existing URL structure in place or use 301 redirects to create a cleaner looking URLs. Currently the URLs are a little long and I would love to move to a /category/product_name type format. Of course the goal is not to lose ranking in the process, I rank pretty well for several competitive phrases and do not want to create a negative impact. How would you guys handle this? Thanks, Dinesh
