Adding some unique text to search
-
I do not know how to easily explain that but I will try
We are running the yellow pages in our country, where most (all) of the companies are listed. Each company has their keywords that are used in our search.
All of those search keywords are indexed by Google and it goes something like that domain.com/search/keyword
So far this page only lists the companies that match the search query. So that's not much content.
I'm thinking about adding a sentence that would go something like this:
The search query lists the companies of our country that do KEYWORD. So far COUNT was found. That seems pretty short and I am not sure if that does a lot of help for Google. But I cannot think of more text. Any ideas? Or should I give up on the idea of adding anything at all?

- You have a yellow pages style of website
Yes
- You'd like to rank each category/keyword page when someone searches for that category in Google
Categories are ranked pretty Good in Google (we have 350 categories, where we list companies). We added text for every category (300 words each)
There are around 200000 long tailed keywords (search phrases or keywords from) from every single company - impossible to add manual text. So we want something automatic, that Google would have to index. At least 50 words. I know that we would not rank in top positions but at least some long tail keywords would bring traffic.
- Currently you list the companies in that category on the page - but the rest of the page doesn't have text (or 'rankable content')
True to that.
- You're thinking of ways to add more content to the page to help it rank better
True to that.
We have a list of 3000 articles, that rank damn good (added daily) in Google. And yes we add interviews as well.
And still I believe that some text would help. But can figure out what would do the trick.

Hi there
Just to make sure I understand you correctly:
- You have a yellow pages style of website
- You'd like to rank each category/keyword page when someone searches for that category in Google
- Currently you list the companies in that category on the page - but the rest of the page doesn't have text (or 'rankable content')
- You're thinking of ways to add more content to the page to help it rank better
Would you be able to add a bit more information about each keyword/category? Maybe information about what those companies do, how they could help someone, what they typically charge etc? That would allow you to add a bit more content to each of these pages.
I would say, however, that the style of website you're trying to rank might be seen as a doorway site or a directory site, which Google isn't too keen on rewarding when it comes to search. To combat this, I would look to add additional content ideas to the website in the form of a blog or other information. Maybe you could interview a business each week as a featured company? Perhaps you could write articles for small business guides on issues like finance, marketing, tax etc. Or maybe even do research and whitepapers for the state of certain industries in local areas - if they're booming or in a crisis.
The idea is that you'd be adding additional value to your website for the user - which would not only increase the perceived 'quality' of the website in Google's eyes, but could also help you rank for some long-tail content as well.
Hope this helps.

How does linkedin get grey microdata when searching a persons name?
If you google any persons name who has a linkedin profile and then locate that entry in the search engine results (linkedin profiles are usually first page for most people) you will see that they get microdata indexed which is basically the persons location and headline from their profile. Looking at their markup, i see location which makes sense as it is an hcard format, but I do not see any microformat data around the headline. Any ideas how they get this? wDQcGZY

Rankings and search traffic fell off a cliff
Hi Moz community, One of my clients has a beast of a website built in ASP.NET (which causes me problems cos I don't have much experience in that) It is a job-site that aggregates job opportunities from other job-sites and provides a job matching service by email etc. They used to have great presence on Google naturally for thousands of job searches. Since Penguin and Penguin 2.0 (I think) their traffic has fallen off a cliff. I have been doing some "off-page" experimentation, seeing if we can fix a lot of issues by re-sculpting their backlink profile (seeing as it was after penguin). but what I have found is that some pages respond to this off page work but some just do not at all, despite how we approach it, such as disavowing previous links building fresh new top quality content links with natural anchor text etc.... Which has lead me to the conclusion that the wider issue is on-page and potentially site structure. Unfortunately as it is ASP.NET I am not so comfortable diagnosing the issues. I think also some issues will be related to dupe content etc.... but I would LOVE to get some input from my learned Moz colleagues. The website is http://www.allthetopbananas.com/ - any tips on how to recover from this dramatic loss of traffic would be massively appreciated. Kind regards

Should Site Search results be blocked from search engines?
What are the advantages & disadvantages of letting Google crawl site search results? We currently have them blocked via robots.txt, so I'm not sure if we're missing out on potential traffic. Thanks!
