Hi guys,
wondering if anyone could shed any light:
just taken on a client who wants to rank for 'Dentist Edinburgh' - using opensightexplorer it looks as if the website has a decent amount of links and authority but it is languishing on page 5 for the above term. If you compare link metrics with some competitors which rank higher Barnton's number seem to be stronger. The site ranks well for less competitive key terms such as '6 month smiles Edinburgh' and 'teeth straightening Ediniburgh' but we are struggling with the main keyword 'dentist Edinburgh'
I've checked webmaster tools and there are no manual actions, so i'm thinking its an algorithmic penalty - any help would be much appreciated.

Looks like your client is part of a link network with exact match anchor text, check out these:

thank you - will have a look at the points you've suggested!

Hi Marcus!
I highly recommend a full audit in this scenario. Here is a super post on this:
https://moz.com/blog/ultimate-local-seo-audit
In a big city like yours, in that industry, competition is going to be tough, and there are several hundred local search ranking factors to consider. You need to start at the bottom of this and work your way up through as many factors as possible, as well as doing a competitive analysis to see how competitors are outranking your client. Then, create a strategy to move the client up.

If you really want to tap into this local market, I would suggest building out your Google+ page - add some photos, maybe shoot for some reviews. This should help you rank in the maps section of the results and can be just as good as a natural p1 ranking (it is before just about every result anyways).
However, it does look like your competition (Edinburgh Family Dentistry) is making use of URL keywords to rank (top 3 results) - and it looks rather crowded. Even their Facebook page is making page 1.
Here is where you might have an issue:
1. What could be going on is over stuffing the keyword Edinburgh into the titles of every page. I would suggest keeping this to a few key pages to rank for, rather than informing Google that every single page is addressing Edinburgh. (Even Edinburgh Family Dentistry has a few pages in which they do not site their name/location)
2. While putting location keywords in your titles is a great way to rank locally...you also should include that keyword in your meta descriptions! I noticed that while you have Edinburgh on just about every page...it is lacking in the description. I would advise targeting keywords in both to strengthen keyword signals.
Hopes this helps! Good Luck!
Best,
Christopher

How can I see if my users are coming from google.com or google.ca?
Got a local search question for you here. Google will automatically redirect most users to their country's google product of choice - google.ca if you're in Canada. However, I'm seeing a ton of organic traffic to our website that is ranking poorly in Google.ca, but ranking well on Google.com. This is a local HVAC business in Alberta. Is there a way to see the amount of traffic coming from Google.com as opposed to Google.ca in analytics?

For a generic domain say www.purplecola.com where the company is based in India (IP address there too), how should they best optimize for US search traffic?
Let's just say that they want to target the US market. Should they add a US based IP address? Would love to hear insight from people who have managed this, experienced this or have expertise. Obviously, a US based physical address would help. Thanks!! Chris

URL Keyword stuffing. service-city.com/product-service-city/ vs. service-city.com/product/
For example: tailoring-london.com/suits-tailoring-london/ or tailoring-london.com/suits/ The main keyword being targeted here is "suit tailoring london". The home page's main keyword is "tailoring london". Would love to hear your opinions. Many thanks 🙂

How can I rank my .co.uk using content on my .com?
Hi, We currently have a .com site ranking second for our brand term in the .co.uk SERP. This is mainly because we don't own the exact match brand term which comes from not having a clue what we were doing when we set up the company. Would it be possible to out rank this term considering we the weighing that google puts towards exact matches in the URL? N.B - There are a few updates we could do to the homepage to make the on-page optimisation better and we have not actively done any link building yet which will obviously help. competitor SERP rank 1 - MOZ PA38 DA26 Our Site SERP rank 2 - MOZ PA43 DA32 Thanks Ben

SEO: .com vs .org vs .travel Domain
Hi there, I am new to MOZ Q&A and first of all I appreciate all the folks here that share their expertise and make everyone understand 'the WWW' a bit better. My question: I have been developing a 'travel guide' site for a city in the U.S. and now its time to choose the right domain name. I put a strong focus on SEO in terms of coding, site performance as well as content and to round things up I'd like to register the _best _domain name in terms of SEO. Let's suppose the city is Atlanta. I have found the following domain names that are available and I was wondering whether you guys could give me some inside on which domain name would perform best. discoveratlanta.org
Local Website Optimization | | kinimod
atlantaguide.org
atlanta.travel
atlantamag.com Looking at the Google Adwords Keyword tool the term that reaches the highest search queries is obviously "Atlanta" itself. Sites that are already ranking high are atlanta.com and atlanta.gov. So basically I am wondering whether I should aim for a new TLD like atlanta.travel or rather go with a .org domain. I had a look around and it seems that .org domains generally work well for city guides (at least a lot of such sites use .org domains). However, I have also seen a major US city that uses .travel and ranks first. On the other hand in New York, nycgo.com ranks well. Is it safe to assume that from the domain names I mentioned it really doesn't matter which one I use since it wouldn't significantly affect my ranking (good or bad)? Or would you still choose one above the other? What do you generally thing about .travel domain names (especially since they are far more expensive then the rest)? I really appreciate your response to my question! Best,
