H Tags Query
-
Hi,
A client I'm dealing with has the following H tags on their homepage:
H1: Online POP & POS Printing for Businesses & Events
H2: Design & Advertising Agencies? Use Your Own Custom Artwork!
H2: Small Businesses & Events? Create Marketing Products Online!
H2: Quicker, Easier & up to 80% Cheaper than Traditional Printing
H2: Customise one of our free themes
H2: Upload your own custom artwork
H2: Commission a bespoke design
H2: Featured Products
H2: Display Printing
H2: Dump Bins
H2: Flyer Display
H2: FSDUs
H2: Hanging Signs
H2: Posters
H2: Shelf Edge
H2: Show Cards
H2: Tent Cards
H2: Window ClingsH3: Look How Easy It Is
H3: Look How Easy It Is
H3: Big brand printing for every budget
H3: Newsletter Sign Up
H3: Available payment methodsH4: Thank You, You have been added to our mailing list
H4: Follow UsAs you can see, there are a lot. I feel the H3 and H4 tags do not really add any value or explain what the site is about, so I'll probably remove these.
In relation to the H2s, do you think I should demote some of these to H3 or even H4 tags? Also, terms like 'Posters' is very vague, would this be better as 'Poster Printing'?
Thanks,
Lewis

I don't see a big deal on length from an H2 point of view. I often have that many H2s and many H3s. The bigger deal is whether the copy is adding any value to the page. Don't fret about the <h?>markup outside of the core H1 of the page.</h?>
I'd be more concerned if formatting is ugly or confusing, or inconsistent.
You can also edit the CSS and HTML to turn
Subtitle goes here
into Subtitle goes here and retain visual formatting identical to how it looks currently. This is the proper way to separate formatting from the semantic markup of the page (headings, in this situation).

Hi John,
Yes, I forgot to mention I'll be shortening the H1 to something along the lines of 'POP & POS Printing'.
-
That is a list!
Will let others comment on H2 and below. The SEO value is not great. The H1 is usually important. The current H1 is v long, not sure value is optimized for the site given length. Is there not a better keyword phrase to chase? ie if is was chasing "Car Insurance" - the H1 would be "Car Insurance Quotes" or visa versa etc.
Hope that assists.

Should you aim for Google to use your meta tags?
When updating meta titles and descriptions, I'm taking note of whether Google is displaying the set tag or changing it to copy from the page. Does this affect the ranking position if Google is having to change the tag? How much should I worry if Google is choosing to change every other page? Thanks!

Title tag
Hello, To rank on China bike tour. Is it ok to write in the title "Explore china on a bike tour - My company name bike tours" Or do I need to absolutely "China bike tour" in the title tag ? Thank you,

Should blog tags be location specific?
I understand the concept of organizing blogs with categories, but how specific should the tags on blog posts be? i.e. "cosmetic dentist" vs. "cosmetic dentist san francisco" I'm specifically using Squarespace if that helps. Thanks!

Optimal amount of alt and title tags on a landing page?
Hey guys! We are preparing a few product landing pages and want to make sure the alt and title tags are done correctly. We looked at landing pages from Apple and Google Nexus and found that they had very few alt and title tags (or none). Are we missing something here? Should there be an alt for every image and title for every link?

Query string parameters and canonical links
Hello everyone, My site uses query string parameters in a few places to manage tasks like pagination of lists. Eg: http://www.example.com/destinations/somewhere?page=2 I have set a canonical link with the href of the page without the query string but still getting thousands of duplicate title/meta description reports from these pages. Is there something I can do to change this? Do search engines actually penalise for use of query string parameters like this? They seem so commonplace, even for sites which use an absolute URI with no query string to serve content. Thanks 🙂
