Unable to get into top 20 even when pages are optimized and most crawl issues resolved
-
I have a few keyword phrases I've been trying to rank in the top 20 for (starting place). I have optimized for a few different phrases, ranging in keyword difficulty, but no matter what I do I can't seem to get in. In many cases, the exact same results show up for many different variations of the phrases I'd like to rank for. I've read about how google tries to match user intent and so if it decides those results are more relevant then it will always show them, but does that mean that no matter what I do I will always be behind them?
The main question I have is: how should I proceed? Should I stop optimizing pages and focus on link acquisition? Or go through and make sure there isn't a single crawl issue? Or focus on optimizing for longer tail keyword phrases?
It just feels like I've done so much of what the moz tools have recommended and I'm seeing very little movement over the past couple of months, if anything I see dips in performance after optimization.
Thanks in advance!

More than crawl issues, but in short yes, broken links, site loading speed, mobile optimization etc. All the basics. The technical seo audit by Moz is an great checklist to work through.
Yes they will be if they are from bought links, or spam directories, but if they are earn't links then they would be natural and should not incur a penalty. It is hard work getting one or two. We use Moz and majestic and do a link analysis. Have you done that? How many links do you actually have with the keyword anchor text you are targeting on the specific page?
Your own blog, and own socials etc and the posts get re-published because you created such awesome content.
Hope that assists. Tragically there is nothing short of back breaking work ahead...

John,
Just to make sure I'm understanding you correctly.
1. Are you suggesting that getting crawl issues to 0 should be my main priority?
2. I was under the impression that obvious use of keywords in anchor text is an easy way of getting penalized by google's algorithm. Is that not true?
3. By "target articles" do you mean guest blog posts on other sites or on my own blog.
Thanks again for further input!

You still have to work on the technical. So do not stop. Also however I would suggest - specific backlink / anchor text targeting of the important keywords you are chasing. So target articles (backlinks) where the anchor text is reflective of the keyword you are attempting to rank for. Make sure they have a strong trust flow and see how you go. Need to get the content up to a formidable level.
Hope that assists.

Hey John,
Thanks so much for your response.
1. Technical SEO, I have spent a good deal of time working on the technical side of things. We do have remaining issues but our site has a lot of pages, especially on the blog (subdomain) and it would take a very long time to get all of them fixed (issues like long page names and duplicate descriptions). But I have fixed duplicate content, 301 to single url, etc. Speed-wise we're ok (64/100 perf grade & 2.5 Load time on pingdom).
2. Backlinks-wise, we're not in terrible shape. 35 DA and 41 PA (homepage). And while many of our competitors are much stronger than us authority-wise, I've seen some with lower numbers that rank higher for some keyword phrases.
3. Content. I have recently started up an initiative for creating more relevant content on the blog with a focus on creating sharable content to earn us some social links and attempt to build some potential marketing relationships. Although we're still in the very early stages on that front (lots of growing pains).
I have to say I've probably watched and read almost every video in the moz academy and read a ton of articles elsewhere, including most of what Matt Cutts has put out there. It feels like I've followed all the right advice from the pros but I'm not seeing that big jump I've been dying to wake up to! Taking all of this into account, what would you advise?
Thanks,
Roman
Also, if anyone else has any advice I would really appreciate the help!

Hi
Without going into a great depth and people will rightly point out everything I have missed there are three keys aspects to ranking. The first is technical seo - see audit link https://moz.com/blog/technical-site-audit-for-2015
It sounds like you are on top of technical - but maybe a quick check. A key one is page loading speed (tools.pingdom.com)
The second is authoritative backlinks. It does sound like a site authority issue - what is your DA & PA for you home page? https://moz.com/products/api if low ie less than 15. Read https://moz.com/beginners-guide-to-link-building
Then the third you need to consider is content creation. https://moz.com/blog/how-to-build-a-content-marketing-strategy.
So three big issues - where are you with each one? Do a little audit and see where you are at may give you guidance in where to place limited resources.
Hope that assists.

Solving URL Too Long Issues
Moz.com is reporting that many URL's are to long, these particularly affect Product URL's where the URL is typically https://www.domainname.com/collections/category-name/products/product-name, (You guessed it we're using Shopify). However, we use Canonicals that ignore all most of the URL and are just structured https://www.domainname.com/product-name, so Google should be reading the Canonical and not the long-winded version. However, Moz cannot seem to spot this... does anyone else have this problem and how to solve so that we can satisfy the Moz.com crawl engine?

I need an interlinking report for my site, is there a report in Moz or another application that tell me how all of my pages are linked to other pages on my site?
I am in the process of doing a redesign for one of my sites. I need an interlinking report for my site. Is there a report in Moz or another application that tell me how all of my pages are linked to other pages on my site?

MozBar in Chrome hides the top of the web page
I prefer the MozBar at the top of the browser. When using the Firefox browser the MozBar does not hide any of the web page. When using the Chrome browser the MozBar (depending on the site) often hides the top portion of the web page. Is there a way I can use the MozBar at the top of Chrome and get the same functionality as Firefox? Best,

Crawl diagnostics up to date after Magento ecommerce site crawl?
Howdy Mozzers, I have a Magento ecommerce website and I was wondering if the data (errors/warnings) from the Crawl diagnostics are up to date. My Magento website has 2.439 errors, mainly 1.325 duplicate page content and 1.111 duplicate page title issues. I already implemented the Yoast meta data plugin that should fix these issues, however I still see there errors appearing in the crawl diagnostics, but when going to the mentioned URL in the crawl diagnostics for e.g.: http://domain.com/babyroom/productname.html?dir=desc&targetaudience=64&order=name and checking the source code and searching for 'canonical' I do see: http://domain.com/babyroom/productname.html" />. Even I checked the google serp for url: http://domain.com/babyroom/productname.html?dir=desc&targetaudience=64&order=name and I couldn't find the url indexed in Google. So it basically means the Yoast meta plugin actually worked. So what I was wondering is why I still see the error counted in the crawl diagnostics? My goal is to remove all the errors and bring it all to zero in the crawl diagnostics. And now I am still struggling with the "overly-dynamic URL" (1.025) and "too many on-page links" (9.000+) I want to measure whether I can bring the warnings down after implementing an AJAX-based layered navigation. But if it's not updating it here crawl diagnostics I have no idea how to measure the success of eliminating the warnings. Thanks for reading and hopefully you all can give me some feedback.

1 week has passed: Crawled pages still N/A
Roughly one week ago I went pro, and then I created a campaing for the smallish webshop that I'm employed at, however it doesn't seem to crawl. I've check our visitors log and while we find other bots such as google, bing, yandex and so fourth, seomoz bot hasn't been visible. Perhaps I'm looking for a normal useragent, ohwell, onwards. While I thought it might take time, as a small test I added a domain that I've owned for sometime but don't really use, that target site is only 17 pages, now this site was crawled almost within the hour, and I realised that our ~5000pages on the main campaing would take some time, but wouldn't the initial 250 pages be crawled by now? I should add, that I didn't add http:// to the original Campaing, but the one that got crawled I did. I cannot seem to change this myself inorder to spot if that's the problem or not. Anyone has any ideas, should I just wait or is there something I can activly do to force it to start rolling?

SEOMoz Q&A having some issues?
Apologies if this has been asked. I was browsing Q&A and got a Ruby error page, reloaded and everything was fine. However a bunch of the topics are kind of messed up, and it looks like a chunk of them are missing now. For example my 'questions I've answered' section of My Q&A only has the newest question and the oldest question, and when I sort the SEOMoz Tools category by newest I get one recent post and then the next one is from November of last year. You guys having database problems?

I have a Rel Canonical "notice" in my Crawl Diagnostics report. I'm presuming that means that the spider has detected a rel canonical tag and it is working as opposed to warning about an issue, is this correct?
I know this seems like a really dumb question but the site I'm working on is a BigCommerce one and I've been concerned about canonicalisation issues prior to receiving this report (I'm a SEOmoz pro newbie also!) and I just want to be clear I am reading this notice correctly. I presume this means that the site crawl has detected the rel canonical tag on these pages and it is working correctly. Is this correct?? Any input is much appreciated. Thanks

On Page missing keywords
I setup my keywords on SEOMoz properly but the On Page result just shows me 2 keywords instead of the 7 that I set for my campaign. I was expecting the application to score the other keywords on wednesday but it did not add the missing keywords. Is this a bug?
