Making the most of a good back link
-
Hi Guys.
We recently acquired a really good backlink from a charity site that has high DA.
71/100 on Open site explorer.
I understand traffic is also a key component in a backlinks value, not just the DA. Is it worth spending time and energy (we don't have much as it's the lead up to Christmas) encouraging people onto the blog post to hopefully get some extra traffic through that link?
And more generally, how much does traffic effect the value of link? Any insights would be greatly appreciated
Isaac.

Hey.
Thanks everyone for theses great answers. Very informative.
Doesn't look like any of their blog posts have established any backlinks, so I'm gona guess that our link should have the value same value as the older ones. Looking forward to Google finding it

Hey Issac,
Not necessarily true. The PA is calculated quite similarly to the site's DA. Which means that (as a rough example), the older blog post you checked the PA as 33 on, might have earned more backlinks, been around longer etc. It's not a confirmed thing that the page with your backlink will eventually have the same PA.
PA and DA are interlinked in the sense that DA will affect PA, but often times, you'll actually see a wide spread of pages with different PAs under every site. For example, my site's home page PA is 42, but a lot of my other pages have PAs ranging from 1 to 19, depending on how much emphasis I've put on them, or if they've earned more backlinks over time.
Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for your response.
This was most defiantly an 'earnt' link, and we're hoping for similar results, a little lift across the board.
I've looked at an older blog post on their site that OSE has more information on. The PA was 33. I assume the new post will have the same PA eventually? As it's in the same part of their site?
And will it take time for the new blog post to gain it's own PA?

Hi Isaac,
Wanted to chip in here too as I was faced with a similar issue recently. We got featured in the local press a few years ago and had a backlink from a 70+ domain authority site too and wanted to make the most out of it.
What I saw happen might be relevant to you. We plugged the feature on our social media etc. and got a few thousand in referral traffic from that feature, but it died off after a while after then content became less popular (seasonal article). The most valuable thing at the end of it was pretty much that we now had a backlink from a highly authoritative source adding to our site's overall domain authority. We saw a nice jump in our overall site's organic search traffic less than a month after the feature was released. This was due to our overall list of keywords jumping ahead by a couple of positions and getting us more exposure across the board.
TL:DR
Powerful backlink adds to your site's overall domain authority which helps you rank for your targeted keywords site-wide. Referral traffic from same backlink might not last too long, so keep moving and take actions that'll continue to help long-term!

OK yeah makes sense. Thanks!

PA is actually calculated very similarly to DA. The difference is that it looks at the link profile for the single page rather than the link profile for the entire domain.
If there's no information on the page in OSE, that'd indicate that the page is too new to have been crawled yet. Whether it'll be in the next index update will depend on just how new it is; you may have to wait one more to get a PA score for it.

Thanks so much for this! I really appreciate your time
Yes it is a new page, it's a blog post they wrote about their charity runners, who we provided some free fitness diaries too.
So will it take some time to gain value from this?
I was under the impression that PA came from the internal link structure. How would I get a sense of the PA. Open site explorer says there is no discoverable information about that page yet.
Also we are the only external link on the page. I take it this is ideal?
Isaac.

Issac,
The more important issue is PA vs. DA. So, while you have a site with high DA, if the page is a new page with low PA or PR, the link is less valuable. Also, if there are many other links on that page, it will dilute the value of the link to you.
Personally, I would not waste time with trying to encourage traffic through a specific link. Your time is better spent continuing to create compelling content that gets you the links, etc.
I hope that helps,
Robert

Back links do I need my keyword in them to rank? If so creative way to accomplish this?
The first question is pretty self explanatory. If I do need my keyword I'm trying to rank for in my link example: Looking for a cool skateboard (cool skateboard) is my keyword. Can anyone on here help me come up with some creative ways for me to get folks to post backlinks to my site with that key word in it? Unfortunately my sites url does not have the keyword in my domain.

Is there a software to help me check whether the sites that i give link to, also place my link on their site (reciprocal link)?
When i exchange links with others, i usually put their link on my site hoping that they'll do the same. Since it's impossible to check all sites whose link i have placed on my page to see if they have put a link back to me, i was wondering whether there is a kind of software to help me do that!

Using an SEO Agency to build one-way links for you via link exchange
There are a number of SEO agencies which offer link building as part of their SEO offerings. I believe they build one-way links to the client site, by offering another link in exchange to the liking site. So, if the client site is "C", and link is being requested from site "A", the site "A" owner is offered a link from site "B" in return. Is this a good and/or recommended practice?

Links from any country?
My site is aimed primarily at the UK, 90% of the traffic is from the UK and most of my links are from other UK based and UK targetted websites. The content is actually fairly international (apart from certain terms like Plasterboard instead of Drywall, etc). My question is: Should I concentrate on gathering links from the UK, or should I widen my search and try to get links from US and European websites? Are there any particular advantages or disadvantages to keeping links "local"?
