Duplicate content?
-
I am not understanding this - I see a duplicate content warning. When I look into it I see these two urls:
http;//search-engine-upgrade.com
http;//search-engine-upgrade.com/default.asp
(NOT a blog)

Thanks to both you and Keri - Even though my hype barks loudly of SEO I am a web designer who has had great luck in organic SEO via good page construction and my copywriting skills. I don't really "tune" other's sites - I rebuild them, usually in hand coded classic asp. Ergo, I am not actually a classic SEO service like many here.
I am finding that I am facing my next tech upgrade here with off-page issues like this one.
I got rid of the htaccess and added the above code in the head. I have never used htaccess like this before and use a format tailored to the server this site resides on. adapting it may have caused the gaffe.
Again, many thanks.

When I go to http://search-engine-upgrade.com/default.asp it's not removing the default.asp or rewriting to add the www, just wanted to let you know as you might want to double check the htaccess.
-
I had the server admin do a 301 on www.search-engine-upgrade.com to the non www, but I have to admit, I had no idea I had to do similar with the default page....Jeeze!
-
Well shiver me timbers. I never figgered your homepage could compete with itself! I guess it's time for me to stop depending on my old-school wordsmithery (old school here only goes back to the mid 90's) and get a new pocket protector ,-]
Thanks for the help & prompt reply. I have already deployed the htaccess

a 301 permanent redirect (as ninjamarketer mentioned) will work. if that's too technical you can also take a look at adding a canonical link to your default.asp.
the canonical link will not remove the "default.asp", but it will communicate to google and the SE's that the correct url for this content is at http://www.search-engine-upgrade.com
in the header put:
< link rel="canonical" href="http://search-engine-upgrade.com"/>
here is google's page on this.
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=139394
you may also want to check your server settings. sometimes they will use a default homepage or configure the 301 for you.
:>) good luck!

I checked the header for both URLs are they are indeed giving me a 200 ok header code which means this is a page canonicalization issue.
Page canonicalization happens in cases where www or non www, .php or non .php , .asp or non .asp pages exist.
The solution to this is to do a 301 redirect of http;//search-engine-upgrade.com/default.asp to
http;//search-engine-upgrade.com using htaccess file.
Please this line of code in your htaccess file
redirect 301 /default.asp http://search-engine-upgrade.com
or you can the following rewrite code
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /default.asp\ HTTP/
RewriteRule ^default.asp$ http://www.search-engine-upgrade.com/ [R=301,L]

What to do with outdated and irrelevant content on a website?
Hi everyone, On our corporate website we have a blog where we publish articles which are directly related to our company (house heating systems and gas cylinders) and some articles which are completely irrelevant to our core business, but which might be of interest to our potential clients. Recently I've been told that it is not a good idea to include these not directly related posts to our core business, because Google might be somewhat confused at to what our core business is all about. I was advised to research this topic and think of completely removing blog posts that are irrelevant to our core business from our blog. By removing I mean completely removing pages and setting a 410 status to tell Google that it is not a 404 error but that these pages were intentionally removed. I would like to hear some independent advice from Moz community as to what I should do? Thank you very much in advance.

Same content but translated. Penalization?
Hi There, I’ve got a question. There are two website that are under the same proprietor but must stay not related (different brand, different IP, different country, different language). The question is: Does google penalize one of the site if I entirely translate the content from site 1 to site2? Thank you very much for you input 😉

Content marketing ideas from the Moz community?
I want to borrow you ideas/experience. I have a page that is ranking #7 in New Zealand. It's the most profitable course I sell. I want to support it with related articles/posts to potentially help it rank better. **I'd love some ideas. ** Page: http://www.bringyourownlaptop.co.nz/web-design-courses.html

Outsourcing content creations
I am using odesk for outsourcing content creation, but i am finding it difficult to hire quality contractors. I am trying to use the fix rate is this is the main reason for getting low quality response for my job openings. Does quality contractor on Odesk prefer hourly rate? Is hourly rate is safe for client? Some of the contractors i hired has provided me the plagiarism content. I am keen to use Odesk for outsourcing but really getting nowhere with this. Suggestions and comments are highly appreciated. Thanks you all in advance.

Possible to recover from Thin/Duplicate content penalties?
Hi all, first post here so sorry if in wrong section. After a little advice, if I may, from more experienced SEOers than myself with regards to writing off domains or keeping them. To cut a long story short I do a lot of affiliate marketing, back in the day (until the past 6 months or so) you could just take a merchant's datafeed and with some SEO outrank them for individual products. However, since the Google Panda update this hasn't worked as well and now it's much hard to do - which is better for the end user. The issue I have is that I got lazy and tried to see if I could still get some datafeeds to rank with only duplicate content. The sites ranked very well at first but after a couple of weeks died massively. They went from 0 to 300 hits a day in a matter of 24 hours and back to 2 hits a day. The sites now not rank for anything which is obviously because they are duplicate content. The question I have is are these domains dead, can they be saved? Not talking about duplicate content but as a domain itself. I used about 10 domains to test things, they ranged from DA 35 to DA 45 - one of the tests being can a domain with reasonable DA rank for duplicate content. Seeing as the test didn't work I want to use the domains for proper sites with proper unique content, however so far although the new unique content is getting indexed it is suffering from the same ranking penalties the duplicate (and now deleted content) pages had. Is it worth trying to use these domains, will Google finally remove the penalty when they notice that the bad content is no longer on the site or are the domains very much dead? Many thanks

Duplicate content - 6 websites, 1 IP. Is the #1 site knocked down too?
Yes I know, running multiple websites on 1 IP isn't smart. 6 Websites with duplicate content on 1 IP is even worse. It's a technical issue we can't solve quickly. Thing is, our #1 website, which has the highest DA and PR, was the first website with all this content. All other websites we're running were launched a few months, and some a few years, later. All content was copied from the #1 website. I'd say the other websites would get knocked down by Google, because they duplicated the content. Google should see that our #1 website was the first that uploaded this content. Therefore our #1 website should rank normally. Questions is: What does Google think of duplicate content when all websites are on 1 IP? Is, or will our #1 website get punished as well?

How can I rank using translated content?
My friend has a website with similar content to mine, in a different language however. He has allowed me to translate his content if I link to it every post (can be nofollow). Does Google penalize me for clearly translated content? How can I make sure it ranks well? BTW, if I convince him that I don't link to him, is it better SEO-wise? Best,
