Decreased organic traffic but increased Webmaster Tool Queries
-
We have a client who has had a significant decrease in organic traffic this last month (about 20%) but in Webmaster tools it tells me there was an increase in impressions and clicks. How can these both be accurate?
-
There can be multiple reasons why this could have happened but before I start, I personally do not trust the data by search console and the main reason is because its delayed but I don’t think it can’t be that wrong that it will challenge the data provided in Google Analytics.
Here are some of the possibilities:
- Check your analytics IP data (ignore traffic from…) There is a possibility that Analytics is ignoring some of the data as instructed whereas webmaster console is looking into every detail.
- Very nice point by Matt. Maybe analytics data is not available on every page on the website and Search Console is tracking that traffic as well.
Also, make sure that you are looking in to the full traffic data in analytics and not just the search traffic only as search console will be tracking the data from search, referral, paid and more.
I believe a quick audit should point where the problem is!
Hope this helps!

I can think of a few ways...
-
Did "organic" include traffic from another search engine that is now entirely gone? I ranked #1 for "domains" on Bing for a day or two. Guess what that did to my traffic? lol

Analytics may not be setup on all new pages. Traffic going to (for instance) blog posts that are posted to social and then picked up by Google but not yet crawled? I had a REALLY big client who had installed GA once but never followed up on all their (manually created) pages. This is why I love Wordpress and template CMS but hate everything else. You can run a Screaming Frog crawl that checks whether the GA code is on every page.

Was the GA code used on ANOTHER site and subsequently removed? WMT would only show you the one site. The same GA code can be posted to 10 sites. When 8 go down, your organic traffic would decrease but your WMT would stay the same.
I'm sure there are at least another 5 ways that this could happen. It would definitely require a bit more investigation but yes, both can happen at the same time.

How are you segmenting your analytics reports? It might be possible that you're excluding locations or devices? I also wouldn't trust Search Console data to be accurate. It's delayed, and only a sample of the true traffic the site is getting. Use it more for research/help on optimization rather than using it as true data for the website.

How to stop URLs that include query strings from being indexed by Google
Hello Mozzers Would you use rel=canonical, robots.txt, or Google Webmaster Tools to stop the search engines indexing URLs that include query strings/parameters. Or perhaps a combination? I guess it would be a good idea to stop the search engines crawling these URLs because the content they display will tend to be duplicate content and of low value to users. I would be tempted to use a combination of canonicalization and robots.txt for every page I do not want crawled or indexed, yet perhaps Google Webmaster Tools is the best way to go / just as effective??? And I suppose some use meta robots tags too. Does Google take a position on being blocked from web pages. Thanks in advance, Luke

We 410'ed URLs to decrease URLs submitted and increase crawl rate, but dynamically generated sub URLs from pagination are showing as 404s. Should we 410 these sub URLs?
Hi everyone! We recently 410'ed some URLs to decrease the URLs submitted and hopefully increase our crawl rate. We had some dynamically generated sub-URLs for pagination that are shown as 404s in google. These sub-URLs were canonical to the main URLs and not included in our sitemap. Ex: We assumed that if we 410'ed example.com/url, then the dynamically generated example.com/url/page1 would also 410, but instead it 404’ed. Does it make sense to go through and 410 these dynamically generated sub-URLs or is it not worth it? Thanks in advice for your help! Jeff

Blocking some countries and redirecting that traffic
Hi there, I have a video site, which is on CDN and is really expensive to run. So I want to block most of the countries and only keep HQ ones. I wonder if there's a difference if I just block them and show blank page, or if I show them a page with text and let's say a link to a different site or if I just simply redirect to some other site. Do you think I can still get good ranking on google on countries that I don't block?

Disavowel tool.
Hello, One of my sites has a strange link profile; it has 40000 in bound links but 30000 of them are from the site http://ourlipsaresealed.skynetblogs.be/ with the anchor text "haarstijl (2)" which is dutch for hairstyles. I haven't paid for or even asked for these links and I don't think its negative seo. I think they just set up a template with hundreds of links they thought were useful to their visitors and produce several pages a day. So the question is do I use the new google disavowel tool? I've held off so far because A. they link to a competitor who haven't been anywhere near as affected as we have although they seem to have been affected to an extent by a drop for some reason and they have a much better link profile overall than mine. and B. in the video Matt cutts goes on over and over that this tool is for people that have done some dodgy link building in the past but I haven't. Thanks, Ian

Understanding Google's keyword tool...
When I type in Google a keyword like : boot camp I get results that show Bootcamp (one word) traffic in the tens of thousands. I see many words combined. Does this mean that tens of thousands of people every month are misspelling that keyword? How should I interpret this in terms of anchor texting? I would hate to deliberately misspell it on my website just to get traffic. For those interested, my website is: http://ultimatebasictraining.com/admin/ (currently revaming my http://ultimatebasictraining.com website)

How do I get rid of all the 404 errors in google webmaster tools after building a new website under the same domiain
I recently launched my new website under the same domain as the old one. I did all the important 301 redirects but it seems like every url that was in google index is still their but now with a 404 error code. How can I get rid of this problem? For example if you google my company name 'romancing diamonds' half the link under the name are 404 errors. Look at my webmaster tools and you'll see the same thing. Is their anyway to remove all those previous url's from google's indexes and start anew? Shawn
