Is my non-www domain working
-
I believe we may have an issue with out domains and links which is causing our seo to suffer.
As far as I'm aware, our non-www domain is being treated as a different domain name. Open Site explorer returns different information for each one.
However, when I go to the non-www domain in my browser (I have to force it using the http as otherwise the browser auto inserts the www) my browser returns a page cannot be found.
But there may be a chance this is actually an issue with the server we access the internet via at work. I need to establish 100% beyond all doubt that our non-www domain is not working.
This is the www: http://www.jetbookingdirect.com/
This is the non-www: http://jetbookingdirect.com/
If it is definitely not working, is the right thing to do to ask my web host to setup a 301 redirect?
Further, I thought redirects could only point to one address. If we 301 redirect, if someone accesses a specific page via the non-www domain, does it then take them to the correct page?
Also, is it safe to say that our non-www domain not working has affected our SEO, and if we fix it, will it improve things for us?
Thank you so much for clarification on this issue.

Fantastic. Thank you so much.

I checked your home page and a couple other pages. Your site is set up perfectly.

When I paste "http://jetbookingdirect.com/" into my browser, the address changes and the www gets added the the address. I have checked the headers and it does now seem to be 301 redirecting, as I asked of my host.
Can you just quickly verify for me the non-www domain is correctly redirecting?
Thanks, your help has been invaluable

We're running on IIS so we can't use this. I don't have access to our hosting so I don't know how to do it.

technically your host won't be abel to help since your cannot forward the TLD to the subdomian, but you can fix it easily in your .htaccess file:
RewriteEngine On
301redirect
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yourdomain.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.cyklopuniverse.dk/$1 [L,R=301] -
Hi Ryan
Our site runs on Wordpress. I have tried removing the www. from our site URL using Wordpress, however when I do this the site breaks.
So for the sake of a technicality I think we'll go with the www - so long as it doesn't really matter much for SEO.
I will contact my web host as soon as possible and ask him to 301 redirect the non-www. Thank you for the really useful help and advice.

Hi Andy. I took a look at your site and your concerns are valid.
Presently your site is available in both the "www" and "non-www" form. Both versions of your URL present your site and offer a 200 code as a header response, meaning there is no redirect in place.
This issue is a problem and has impacted your SEO. The "www" version of your home page shows it has links incoming from 50+ domains. The "non-www" version shows links from over 150 domains. Your links are split between the two domains and therefore are not as effective. By selecting one form of your URL your links will be combined which offers a lot of SEO value.
The first step is you need to make a decision as to how you would like your site to appear, with the "www" version or the "non-www" version. It really doesn't matter which choice you make, it is up to you. All things being equal I would choose the "non-www" URL since you have the most links to that form of your URL.
The correct course of action would be to contact your web host and request them to 301 redirect all "www" URLs to their "non-www" equivalent. Once the change is made TEST IT! I have seen issues where the change was not made correctly and either a 302 redirect was put into place, or all pages redirected to the home page.
A proper redirect should redirect your visitors to the correct page. For example, look at this Q&A on the SEOmoz site. You notice SEOmoz uses the "www" form of the URL. Now try going to this URL: http://seomoz.org/q/is-my-non-www-domain-working
Notice how the site automatically added the "www." to the URL? That is exactly how your site should work.

Domain Masking SEO Impact
I hope I am explaining this correctly. If I need to provide any clarity please feel free to ask. We currently use a domain mask on an external platform that points back to our site. We are a non-profit and the external site allows users to create peer-to peer fundraisers that benefit our ministry. Currently we get many meta issues related to this site as well as broken links when fundraisers expire etc. We do not have a need to rank for the information from this site. Is there a way to index these pages so that they are not a part of the search engine site crawls as it relates to our site?

Registering expired domains
Hi there, I've found a good domain that is available for a new project. It has been expired for about 4 months or so. It has a couple of links, with the domain name as an anchor, nothing horrible. Will buying a domain like this be safe from an seo perspective? I'm guessing it would be treated the same as buying a new domain that has never been registered before, Would I be right? Peter

Will links to www and none www result in penalty?
Hello all, Normally i redirect my www to none www to avoid the potential of duplicate content and as its typically something that is done in SEO. I don't have access to the site of the company I am working for at the moment as everything related to the sites code goes through the web developer. At the moment the site lives at www and none www and one does not redirect to the other. I have been building links (organically as we engage on a few forums and blogs) to the www as that is how it is linked internally already and how links from the job boards we post on link. We do however have some natural none www links and my concern is that since the site isn't redirected that it is being penalised or could become penalised because of this. I imagine that it isn't a serious penalty if one at all but I would rather know so I can try and get it sorted as fast as possible. Thanks.

How do I stop www.mysite.com/ showing as a duplicate of www.mysite.com
I have run the campaigns software over a site and it is showing that www.mysite.com/ is a duplicate of www.mysite.com, how do I correct this? Is it a genuine duplicate page? My first thought was to use rel canonical but there is no page called / to put it on. Your suggestions welcomed Sean

How do I fix a multiple domain mess?
I just picked up an account that is a franchisee and they have 6 exact match domains plus their main domain (all exact duplicates, not 301s). GA shows the main domain as getting the lion's share of hits, but for some important local keywords, the exact match domains rank higher. Some pages may have the exact match domain, primary domain and the franchise domain all ranking on the same SERP. Yuk! My strategy is to work on the main domain and as the work progresses, the main site will surpass the exact match domains and main franchise domain for the important searches. For the exact match domains I plan on just leaving them alone. Is this a sound strategy? I could pull the exact match domains down, but since they rank well for their keywords, it seems most sensible to leave them up. What do you think?

How do I resolve Twin domains? redirect website.com to www.website.com?
I am new to this website. Tried to run a campain and got a warning that website.com resolves to www.website.com which hinders SERP by competing for Keyword indexing!. (website is my domain name) Would appreciate help with this. Thanks. S.H. PS: here is the exact wording of error : We have detected that the domain www.yfvaccine.com and the domain yfvaccine.com both respond to web requests and do not redirect. Having two "twin" domains that both resolve forces them to battle for SERP positions, making your SEO efforts less effective. We suggest redirecting one, then entering the other here.
