How Long For Percolation?
-
How long does it currently take a page to percolate up as far as it is likely to in SERPs? We posted and had Google index a blog post a few weeks back that isn't yet on the radar. I'm surprised at that given the competition on that keyword and the fact that Moz gives us an A for on-page optimization. Our site has another page ranking at 23 for the keyword, but it isn't nearly as optimized for it as the new one.
Thanks for your help.

Neil,
One difference likely present in the older page is that it is more likely to have links to it than the new page. If you have social at any reasonable level that could also have an effect on the pages differently (one has been shared more often, etc.). Obviously, the other item is how competitive is the vertical and the keyword for that vertical you are trying to move up in. The list of factors goes on and on.
Good luck.

Logan is right.
Adding a little...... On-page optimization can make a big difference in your rankings. However, as the level of competition increases other factors such as the strength of your domain and the links to the competing page become just as, if not more, important than the precision of optimization.

As with most things in SEO, it depends. Depends on the search volume of the keyword, how many sites you're competing with, how many of those sites are well optimized, how many links your page/site have, how authoritative/trustworthy your site is, and so on. There are a lot of variables in the mix here, so it's not feasible to provide a numerical answer.

Optimizing a page for a keyword, or even earning an "A" from the page grader, merely "qualifies" your page to appear in the SERPs. It does not guarantee any appearance in the SERPs or any level of ranking.
New, superbly optimized pages on very strong sites can have difficulty reaching a visible position in the SERPs - even if the webpages displayed in the search results above them are on weak or nascent websites. Rand's Whiteboard Friday video, posted this morning gives some insight into why apparently strong pages on powerful sites might be defeated in the SERPs by websites with lower metrics.
https://moz.com/blog/google-may-analyze-evaluate-quality-content-whiteboard-friday
Most articles that I publish on a very strong site take months to a year or more to slowly climb the SERPs to a visible position. I am generally pleased with the results but some pages never reach my expected position in the SERPs.

Thanks Logan. We'll look into the canonicalization. In general, though, I'm still interested to know how long it takes a new page to percolate up.

Hi Neil,
If you've got two pages targeting the same keyword, they're going to compete against each other and you likely won't see either of them too high up in SERPs. I recommend canonicalizing one towards the other. Keep the one that is stronger in terms of URL structure, PA, and links (if any).

Url too long
Hi we have a wordpress website for Office Furniture Our domain name does not have office furniture in it. So we went from having domain.com/shop/category/second-sub-cat to domain.com/office-furniture/category/second-category However we now have 509 products flagged with too long urls I am wondering whether we should change back : For example domain.com/office-furniture/office-corner-desks/beech-corner-desks Should I go back to domain.com/shop/office-corner-desks/beech-corner-desks Or am I going to confuse matters even more? I should say this only affects categories as the products themselves are /shop/product I am just concerned that changing the re-direct in place originally will just make matters worse and confuse things - would I get more value changing back? Or should I stick with it and just try to shorten urls individually by product titles etc

Are three Adsense ads on a long page a negative for search ranking?
I've not a site whose home page that is #1 for a popular keyword. The page is 1200 words, plus comments following. It's a clean page with no popups, and has one large rectangle Adsense ad above the fold (lots of text around this ad, and a very high percentage of page ATF is text), and another large rectangle Adsense ad that is midway down the article (after you have to page twice to get there). So, it's a very low ad to text ratio and ATF looks very clean. I have room for one more Adsense ad closer to the bottom of the article, which would be about five page downs through the page. My question is, will placing another ad way down the page affect my ranking in any negative way? I'm so pleased with my #1 ranking I hesitate to add it. But the page converts in Adsense so well, and heat maps show a large number readers do read all the way down the page, so I'd like to pick up some more ad revenue.

How long before I give up on a keyword
Making the assumption that all "controllable" factors are done correctly, and your DA and PA are competitive, is there a good rule of thumb on how long I should give a keyword before I try for a different keyword if I'm unable to break the first page on the Google's SERP?

How long does it take Google to index new title tags and meta descriptions?
Hi, I have launched a website ( www.bookkeepingking.com )and would like Google to reflect the latest title tag changes in its results. How long does it typically take to happen? I believe this might be one reason why the site may not be generating any search traffic yet, even though I haven't yet begun any link building yet. A couple of notes: When I enter site:bookkeepingking.com in the search box, the pages show up, but with the old/default title and meta descriptions. I am using the Yoast for SEO plugin I have resubmitted the XML map - Yoast created 2... /page-sitemap.xml and /post-sitemap.xml The changes were made about 1 week ago. WMT says that there are zero errors. Is there something I may have missed? Or do I just need to give it more time? Thanks in advance for your help. Erin

How long does it take for Google to see Changes to a site?
Hi, I have a low PR site (PR 1) that I am starting to work on. Ingeneral when you make changes to my site how long would it take Google to recognize and index those changes? The reason I am wondering is because the site I am working on had a lot of duplicate content (around 700 pages), I got rid of it all, but I wasn't sure how long it would take Google to spider all these pages and re-index them since the site is low PR. Thanks, Ken

How long after a URL starts showing a 404 does Google stop crawling?
Before hiring me to do SEO, a client re-launched their site and did not 301 the old URLs to the new. Only the home page URL stayed the same. For a month after the re-launch, the old URLs returned a 404. For the next month, all 404 pages (basically any non-existent URL) were 301'd to the home page. Finally, 2 months after launching, they properly 301'd the old URLs to the new. Now, the new URLs are not ranking well. I assume it's too late to realize any benefit from the 301's, just checking to see if anybody has any insight into how long Google keeps trying to crawl old/404/improperly 301'd URLs. Thanks!

How long is too long for domain URL length?
I noticed one of the negatively correlated ranking factors was length of URL. I'm building a page from scratch, we are trying to rank for 'Minneapolis Fitness' and 'Minneapolis Massage'. Is www.minnnepolismassageandfitness.com just ridiculously long? Or does the exact match outweigh the penalty for URL length?

How long should anchor text be? Best practice for anchor text length?
site: http://www.cerritosnissan.com/index.htm On the bottom of this homepage there is an seo content area, basically right under where it says "orange county nissan" welcomes you. The internal links in this area are very long and I'm wondering why they would do this - is there any benefit to making anchor text longer? The longer the anchor text, the less each part of that anchor text passes link juice. For example, for a page about their reviews, the anchor text of the link is "See what Cerritos Nissan customers have to say about their experience at this great Orange County Nissan Dealership.". If I would have done this the anchor text would be "Cerritos Nissan Reviews" or just plain "reviews" as the anchor text. Why would they be using such long keywords as anchor text?
