Bing Ranking Factors
-
Question...
I have a few clients that rank well for Google (first page) but are not ranking as well on Bing (page 5). Any suggestions on what to do to increase Bing ranking? I understand that Google and Bing use different algorithms, but just curious how you can increase ranking.
Appreciate your input. Thanks

Hi Swendt,
For more information check out these two blog posts that talk about SEO for Bing and SEO for Bing vs. Google, but I can give you the TL;DR version here.
While Google and Bing care about pretty much about the same ranking signals, the websites weigh these factors a lot differently. For example, while both search engines care about backlinking, Google cares more about the number of backlinks while Bing places a lot of emphasis on the authority of the backlinks—think TLD (.gov, edu and .org) backlinks. Additionally, it helps to keep in mind that Bing’s search algorithm is less complex than Google’s search algorithm. This is important because it makes Bing more susceptible to spam, which Bing completely understands and attempts to counter. For example, Bing weighs domain age more heavily than Google does because domain age demonstrates credibility in a search engine’s eyes.
A few more tips to optimize your website for Bing:
- Bing likes keywords in the domain, but Bing also likes short URLs
- Bing likes TLD extensions (especially .gov, .edu, and .org)
- With Bing, link diversity matters more than on Google (this may have changed post-penguin)
- Sites that use precise anchor text tend tend to rank higher on Bing – especially when your anchor text matches the page title
- According to Search Engine Journal, Bing tends to favor sites with a lot of content
- Older domains tend to do better on Bing
- Bing prefers a site structure that goes from broad (think homepage) to specific (think product-specific landing page)
- On Bing, the authority of your backlinks matters more than the number of backlinks you have
- Bing practices social searching and cares about things like Facebook “likes”
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Thank you for the information. I'll take a look at the Bing Ranking Factors blog.

Hi Swendt,
I use https://www.bing.com/webmaster/ you get a dashboard quite similar as Google Search Console. They even have a SEO report tool where you can see what errors they see when crawling your site. Als their Mobile SEO reporting is pretty good. My belief is that Bing is slower in indexing since news items and new products are not indexed as quick as with Google. A good article on Bing Ranking Factors can be found on http://www.matthewwoodward.co.uk/tips/bing-seo-ranking-factors/
Good luck, regards,
Tymen

SEO rank down after Magento migration
Since November we migrated our shop from Magento 1 to 2 and our organic traffic has dropped by 50%. We still haven't figured out the cause (or a solution). Are there more Magento users who have the same issue? Charlotte (www.dochorse.nl)

Ranking problems with international website
Hey there, we have some ranking issues with our international website. It would be great if any of you could share their thoughts on that. The website uses subfolders for country and language (i.e. .com/uk/en) for the website of the UK branch in English. As the company has branches all over the world and also offers their content in many languages the url structure is quite complex. A recent problem we have seen is that in certain markets the website is not ranking with the correct country. Especially in the UK and the US, Google prefers the country subfolder for Ghana (.com/gh/en) over the .com/us/en and .com/uk/en versions. We have hreflang setup and should also have some local backlinks pointing to the correct subfolders as we switched from many ccTLDs to one gTLD. What confuses me is that when I check for incoming links (Links to your site) with GWT, the subfolder (.com/gh/en) is listed quite high in the column (Your most linked content). However the listed linking domains are not linking at all to this folder as far as I am aware. If I check them with a redirect checker they all link to different subfolders. So I have now idea why Google gives such high authority to this subfolder over the specific country subfolders. The content is pretty much identical at this stage. Has any of you experienced similar behaviour and could point me in a promising direction? Thanks a lot. Regards, Jochen

Ranking and Deindexing Issues
Hi We have a website www.advanced-tuning.co.uk which has been suffering since Penguin 2 in terms of SERPS drops and indexing of pages. There are several issues which I believe are impacting on rankings and indexing/ pages being removed from the index. 1) Unnatural links. Been through Cemper and 2% of back links are toxic , 71% suspicious. There has been some auto link building undertaken by previous SEO’ers which has resulted in a lot of very poor quality back links - .pl forum member links etc. I put together a link disavow doc and have now seen Average Link Detox Risk drop to moderate from high. There still a few dodgy links but I’m working my way through these. 2) “thin” content – the site has a lot of auto generated manufacturer / model web pages e.g. http://advanced-tuning.co.uk/model/chevrolet-captiva-2-0-d-vcdi-150/ http://advanced-tuning.co.uk/model/bmw-116i-115/ these pages are internally linked to each other In addition there's a series of geographically targeted web pages which tbh don't seem to have been hit (yet) e.g. http://advanced-tuning.co.uk/location/engine-remapping-huddersfield/ My question is should I; a) Look to remove these manufacturer / model pages completely b) Invest time in generating suitable content for the service /location pages? c) Remove both types of content and concentrate on creating suitable content and links for the top level manufacturer web pages Also If i do remove the manufacturer / model pages is it worth me 301'ing the pages that are still indexed? Thanks in advance, Ade

Rankings and search traffic fell off a cliff
Hi Moz community, One of my clients has a beast of a website built in ASP.NET (which causes me problems cos I don't have much experience in that) It is a job-site that aggregates job opportunities from other job-sites and provides a job matching service by email etc. They used to have great presence on Google naturally for thousands of job searches. Since Penguin and Penguin 2.0 (I think) their traffic has fallen off a cliff. I have been doing some "off-page" experimentation, seeing if we can fix a lot of issues by re-sculpting their backlink profile (seeing as it was after penguin). but what I have found is that some pages respond to this off page work but some just do not at all, despite how we approach it, such as disavowing previous links building fresh new top quality content links with natural anchor text etc.... Which has lead me to the conclusion that the wider issue is on-page and potentially site structure. Unfortunately as it is ASP.NET I am not so comfortable diagnosing the issues. I think also some issues will be related to dupe content etc.... but I would LOVE to get some input from my learned Moz colleagues. The website is http://www.allthetopbananas.com/ - any tips on how to recover from this dramatic loss of traffic would be massively appreciated. Kind regards

Will links to a subdomain help it rank?
I have an affiliate subdomain on a larger company's domain. (For example I have: www.victor.company.com on www.company.com). Would working to attain backlinks to the subdomain help it rank or will I just be putting forth my effort and helping the domain rank?

Why isn't link velocity in the 2011 Ranking Factors?
How come there's no reference to link velocity in the Search Ranking Factors, 2011 or prior? We know that we have to continue building links for a client even if they're already doing well, not just because of the competition nipping at their heels but because if we stop they slip down anyway, so we know that stopping link building will often times have an adverse effect... meaning link velocity right? So how come there's no mention of it? Just curious 🙂
