Alternative tools for Keyword Traffic
-
Hi There,
Wondering if anyone has any other tools they would recommend using for finding out keyword traffic on websites. Currently (and I'm sure like most), my website is connected to Google Analytics and Google Search Console. My biggest frustration becomes the "(not set)" variable that appears when I go to review the keywords section. It's always such a large number and I have no way of finding out what people might be typing in and coming across my website. Of course, I understand the privacy factor as to why Google must do this but it's certainly difficult to analyze what's working and what's not.
Any tips, tricks or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Lindsay

The Moz keyword explorer tool is a great new way to determine which keywords to use. It:
- Shows how often keywords are searched
- Displays how difficult it is to rank on Google for these keywords
- Provides the opportunity that your link will actually be clicked on
- Offers to human element (aka what we know that the data doesn't know)
- Considers all of the aforementioned in a metric called "potential"
You can type in a keyword and then a list of keywords (long tailed and short) will show up in a list. Often times, commonly searched questions will show up in this list, which can inspire blog topics.
That way, you can research keywords and topics at the same time.

If you set up a Google Adwords account, you can access a magical report called the "Paid & Organic Keywords" report.
Tl;DR Exporting Search Queries from Google Search Console limits you to 2,000. The Paid & Organic Search Report from Adwords gives you every single organic keyword that produced a visitor to your site. Yes, every single stinking one. Yay.
Don't worry, you don't actually have to spend money on campaigns to access this report. Simply set up a campaign, set your bid to $0.01 and pause the campaign.
THEN - you must connect your Google Search Console account to your Adwords account. This is a simple setting that can be enabled in the Admin area.
Downside - Data doesn't start being collected until the two tools are connected. You can't get historical data.
Instructions for setting up the Paid & Organic Search Report can be found here.
Google says (emphasis added by me): "Organic results are not constrained by your AdWords campaigns’ ad targeting settings. In other words, your ads are limited by the languages and locations you target in your AdWords account, but your organic search listings are not. That means it’s possible to have more organic impressions than paid impressions even if your campaigns have 100% impression share. For example, if your ad campaign for a given keyword is targeted just to the United States, an organic impression occurring in Canada would still show up in your paid & organic report for that keyword even though you don't advertise there."
Here are some helpful screenshots:
1. Where to go to set this up
2. What you see once successfully connected
3. How to navigate to the Paid & Organic report.
There you have it. Access to all of the keywords that have sent traffic to your site. The report is updated once a day. Date ranges are available back to the day you first connected your accounts.
Hope that helps! Hit me up if you have questions.
Dana

How come de results from the old Google Keyword Tool are so different from the results from the keyword planner?
When I insert the keyword 'IT jobs' with Belgium as country and Dutch as the language, there is a huge difference between the results in the keyword planner and the keyword tool. Keyword tool says 1,000,000 local searches per month Keyword planner says 590 local searches per month This is a really big difference and I don't know which results I should trust. Can anybody help me with this?

Getting traffic for another site
Hi Everyone, Our website url/brand is very close to another website url/brand. We are non-competing entities. It appears as though this other company has begun a marketing program which has resulted in our traffic skyrocketing. However, it seems to have also resulted in our Pages/Visit and Visit Duration to decrease and our Bounce Rate to increase. Can anyone suggest how to deal with this type of scenario? Thanks,

Google Analytics censoring keywords?
The top keyword on our real time GA is showing as a blank. There's a topic of a sexual nature in our talk threads trending on Twitter right now which is driving a lot of traffic and I'm wondering whether Google have censored the keyword. The next few keywords are our name and variants of. Could there be some other reason why this word isn't showing up? Has anyone else experienced this?
