Is their value in building your own website network?
-
--- I am moving this into open discussion to see if I can get a few more responses, I am very curious if anyone has experience in this area ---
Hello, As a resource for my link building strategies I have often wondered if building my own 'web network' of sites would prove to be valuable in link building. For example, if I were targeting the travel industry (or insert a niche here) and created 30 websites on various related topics in the industry, would using outbound links from those sites to other relevant websites help increase domain authority?
Obviously, I would need to avoid creating unusable sites with boilerplate content just for the sole purpose of linking. I am envisioning working websites/blogs that would be valuable on their own.
Some thoughts and questions that have crossed my mind:
-
If these sites are all hosted on the same server, would the link exchange end up in penalization in the SERPs?
-
Being that the sites are designed to be quality sites on their own, can they share links between themselves if the links are relevant?
-
This is already being done across the web, but what makes one network valuable and 'quality' vs another
Being a web dev / host as well as SEO guy I would like to utilize those resources to create a network that is of quality and of value, but am not sure about things appearing 'unnatural'... It seems that the majority of link building falls into the 'unnatural' category as we as SEOs are constantly trying to place our links throughout the web vs. site owners linking naturally back to a website

Thanks for the feedback! As for hosting on separate servers, I have thought about going that route, but then I look at some of the larger networks with hundreds of sites if not thousands and I am not guessing that they are all on separate servers. I could do the leg work of some reverse DNS to find that out (will update this post)
I can see with spammy sites how the same server would hurt a network as it could quickly become a 'bad neighborhood', but I don't think google would likely penalize sites on the same network if the incoming links are from outside root domains and the site is of decent quality
I feel like the answer to this lies in the inbound links and the content quality of the sites, but am looking for some hard evidence to support my thoughts.
A good example is Smashing Networks series of sites... I need to do some research on that

It's good that you are looking to build quality sites and I'm sure they will work for you in time. I would host them on separate servers though.
I don't see why you couldn't link between some of them if it seems a natural thing to do.
Would say that a valuable network is one that engages and influences a lot of people. They will take quite a long time to build up though, especially if you are doing 30.
Good luck

Penguin 2.0 Update - Just Hit - Google Messes up again, can anyone on SEOMOZ please tell me why or how some of these websites are ranking?
I am getting a bit tired now writing all of this so please excuse grammar and spelling mistakes, I wanted to post this up quickly tonight so I could possibly get some feedback by morning. So I feel I figured out some of the new update that just hit and I am sure the update will continue to keep coming and rankings will most likely change for a while, but I do have a few questions in the mean time if they stay. Please look below, why would some of those sites be ranking? Some sites utilize no onpage SEO, some no backlinks, one of the sites is a single page site and every page is a broken link even the contact us page and it's rank 1..... I am not 100% sure that Google got this one right. I see many instances below where other sites are much higher quality and have more authority. It's as if Google took terrible sites and said here is a site for you, now deal with it and I hope it works out at the top. I do see several sites that belong on the first page, but I see others that are very questionable. This is how the following is written below. Before the url is the anchor text density % for the site. This indicates the percentage of the amount of times the anchor text was backlined versus other anchor texts they used. Issues with the sites. Most of these sites don't utilize onpage SEO and it's clearly not a factor for onpage density purposes, there is a site with 37% keyword density on it. Some sites even have broken links. Please note: I already know that there is a lot of data that is analyzed to determine rankings more than this, but PA/DA is suppose to be a major factor according to everyone that believes in SEOMOZ.org. So I am taking in account for many of those factors being calculated due to this. These are just some random keywords I picked, because I know you need to analyze other SEO firms after and update to figure out what lasted and what didn't. All of my sites lasted due to ethical tactics, but I had some rankings move down and others go up, very odd. The onpage SEO is sloppy and the writing looks forced. Why is this even ranking? The site also looks low quality. The density is higher than SEOMOZ even and it has less words. In this case DA + words carried this site up, not the anchor ratio being low. 6.17% http://www.cheapseo-services.com cheap seo Page Authority DA 28 -- PA 38 276 Words No onpage, 35 duplicate pages, free template, etc.. etc.. 10% www.seomoz.org/blog/how-to-do-seo-cheap DA 94 --- PA 56 only 5 anchor texts used on this page. 8651 Words I am willing to bet if you diversified this with about 5 more anchor texts this could be number 1 easy. What is the best Press Release website?
What is the best press release website for getting a press release in front of writers and news sources? We have used a couple with OK success, but I would like to hear and learn from the experiences of others. Thanks *I am not concerned with the page rank of the press release site or any SEO benefit coming from the PR website itself.

If you could go back in time and build any brands SEO what brand would that be and why?
Ok so yes this my idea of having fun when I think about SEO. For me it would be Coca Cola as they only have fast moving consumer goods and their whole brand just SCREAMS "please take me viral". Maybe Disney or a Gaming company..

Build a site, do SEO work on it and sell it?
Does anybody do this? With success? I keep finding industries right here in my local area (concrete work, home security, painting) that have 4-5 local companies that are competing and NONE of them are doing even the most BASIC items to seo their site or capitalize on ANYTHING online. I could pick 7-8 of these industries and have somebody who works for me spend a couple hours a week on each building links and writing a half way interesting blog post, etc. and once they rank higher than most of the competition sell em for 2-3 grand I bet, especially since I can prove how much traffic they are getting. Thoughts? Thanks for weighing in. Matthew

Help on implementing schema.org in our hotel website
Hi, We came across with this schema.org and we decide that it will be helpful in our website if we can implement it properly. But somehow reading through the documents still makes us confused on how to use it. Can anybody show me how to use it? For example in our homepage www.florahospitality.com I can use the itemType Local business on the content but I can also use the itemType Hotel on the Hotel Listing dropdown. Is it advisable the two type at the same time?
