Is it good practice to use "SAVE $1000's" in SEO titles and Meta Descriptions?
-
Our company sells a product system that will permanently waterproof almost anything. We market it as a DIY system. I am working on SEO titles and descriptions. This topic came up for discussion, if using "SAVE $1000's.." would help or hurt. We are trying to create an effective call to action, but we are wondering if search engines see it as click bait. Can you
-
Thanks for the reply. Presented like that it doesn't look quite so offensive
I take on board your feedback; I did look at address your question, near the end of my post, though I confess my language was a little vague, so I'll try again:
Having this phrase as part of your title page will not hurt your rankings; there are far greater sins you can commit than that.
(Just don't expect to be rewarded - I'm sorry, I can't help myself!)
Something else to consider, mentioning specific savings (to the penny) might be more eye-catching than $1000s, which comes back to my point about case studies.
If you do use it in your title. you can split test delivery and engagement of a few variants and see what works best for you.
Good luck with the project - I'll hit you up if I start getting any damp problems

**My intention for the questions was to discuss if some call to actions, or sales copy in the SEO Titles can hurt rankings. **
It certainly wont help Tyler. Google (or indeed anyone searching) wants to see something less in-your-face in terms of what is promised. I personally wouldn't visit a page with a title like that as it sounds like a sales page, even before you get there.
Put yourself in a shoes of a Google rater. Do you think they would see that as a worthwhile title or something spammy? Is someone searching for 'how much can I save' or are they searching for a solution to a problem?
I can't think of any situation where a title like this would be helpful for SEO.

I appreciate the response. There are points stated that i agree with such as, "If you want to talk about potential savings, deliver this message through the body copy, using real-world examples with case studies." I agree case studies are a very valuable tool in gaining trust and value to your product.
However, separating yourself from the competition with an eye catching call-to-actions, is extremely important. If you are not thinking about user behavior, and just focusing directly on the keywords i think your missing the point to my question. The example may be a bit "tacky" but its a differentiator from the competition. The structure of the title can be something like " DIY Basement Waterproofing | Save $1000's with "Company" Waterproofing System." Where my focus and page content is all about "Do-It-Yourself" waterproofing. Also filled with case studies and testimonials.
My intention for the questions was to discuss if some call to actions, or sales copy in the SEO Titles can hurt rankings.

This approach has more than a whiff of tackiness about and I'd be keen to avoid it at all costs. With a little thought you can deliver something far smarter.
If you want to talk about potential savings, deliver this message through the body copy, using real-world examples with case studies perhaps? For example: Typical cost of waterproofing an X x Y basement using product Z = $3,200. Doing the same job with WaterAway = $27.55 (and break it down, with an itemised shopping list for the alternative method). That's going drive more sales than the hollow (and over-used) promise to save them'Save $1000s' (even if it later turns out to be able to do just that).
An effective Call to Action is borne out of successfully identifying a problem and positioning your product as the perfect solution to it. With that in mind, I'd do some keyword research around 'waterproofing' (<a>https://moz.com/explorer</a>) and see what real world waterproofing problems people are looking for solutions for and tailor your content (Including Titles and Descriptions) around that.
If this is done correctly, there's really no need to engage in cheap tricks. Understand your problems your potential customers are having and offer an easy and cost-effective solution.
To address your question (if using "SAVE $1000's.." would help or hurt) It certainly isn't going to help - as it doesn't relate to the user's search query in any way, which is what you should be focusing on. I wouldn't go as far as to say you'll be penalised for it, either (you'd need to engage in a few other nefarious practices for that to happen). Just don't expect to be rewarded for using it - by Google or your potential customers.
I hope that helps

How Important is Meta Description on Non-Entry Pages?
If a page is never used as an entry page to your website -- in other words it's an obscure, relatively unimportant page that never ranks high enough in the search engines to be in the first few pages of the search results for any significant number of searches -- does editing the META Description really have any significant benefit? I guess the question could also be phrased as, does the Google Search Algo factor in the META Description tag, or is it only used for display purposes on the search results and doesn't affect ranking?

Are "Powered By..." type footer backlinks good or bad for SEO?
Hi guys, We're running a software company which is also selling WP themes amongst other things. We've heard recently that footer backlinks like "Powered by BigBangThemes" might do more harm than good. Some clients usually forget to change them - so we want to make sure we stop including them in case this is true. Thanks!

Help with Schema & what's considered "Spammy structured markup"
Hello all! I was wondering if someone with a good understanding of schema markup could please answer my question about the correct use so I can correct a penalty I just received. My website is using the following schema markup for our reviews and today I received this message in my search console. UGH... Manual Actions This site may not perform as well in Google results because it appears to be in violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines. Site-wide matches Some manual actions apply to entire site <colgroup><col class="JX0GPIC-d-h"><col class="JX0GPIC-d-x"><col class="JX0GPIC-d-a"></colgroup>

| | Spammy structured markup Markup on some pages on this site appears to use techniques such as marking up content that is invisible to users, marking up irrelevant or misleading content, and/or other manipulative behavior that violates Google's Rich Snippet Quality guidelines. Learn more. | I have used the webmasters rich snippets tool but everything checks out. The only thing I could think of is my schema tag for "product." rather than using a company like tag? (https://schema.org/Corporation). We are a mortgage company so we sell a product it's called a mortgage so I assumed product would be appropriate. Could that even be the issue? I checked another site that uses a similar markup and they don't seem to have any problems in SERPS. http://www.fha.com/fha_reverse shows stars and they call their reviews "store" OR could it be that I added my reviews in my footer so that each of my pages would have a chance at displaying my stars? All our reviews are independently verified and we just would like to showcase them. I greatly appreciate the feedback and had no intentions of abusing the markup. Best Practices for Homepage Title Tag
Hi, I would like to know if there is any update about the best practices for the homepage title tag. I mean, a couple of years ago, it was still working placing main keywords in the homepage title tag. But since the last google SERP update, the number of characters that are being shown were reduced, and now we try to work with 55 and 56 characters. That has reduced our capacity of including many keywords on the title tag. Besides, search engines are smarter now to choose the correct inner page to show in SERP. But I am wondering if the Homepage Title should have a branded orientation or should include main keywords, cause it is still working that strategy. I would appreciatte any update in this issue. Thank you!

Is their value in linking to PPC landing pages and using rel="canonical"
I have ppc landing pages that are similar to my seo page. The pages are shorter with less text with a focus on converting visitors further along in the purchase cycle. My questions are: 1. Is there a benefit for having the orphan ppc pages indexed or should I no index them? 2. If indexing does provide benefits, should I create links from my site to the ppc pages or should I just submit them in a sitemap? 3. If indexed, should I use rel="canonical" and point the ppc versions to the appropriate organic page? Thanks,

Creative Commons Images Good for SEO?
I've been looking at large image packages through iStock, Getty, Fotolia and 123RF, but before spending a bunch of money, I wanted to get some of your feedback on Creative Commons images. Should be worried that something found on Google Images > Search Tools > Usage Rights section can be used without issue or legal threats from the big image companies so long as they are appropriately referenced? AND will using these types of images and linking to the sources have any affect on SEO efforts or make the blog/website look spammy in Google's eyes because we need to link to the source? How are you using Creative Commons images and is there anything I should be aware of in the process of searching, saving, using, referencing, etc? Patrick

Can too many "noindex" pages compared to "index" pages be a problem?
Hello, I have a question for you: our website virtualsheetmusic.com includes thousands of product pages, and due to Panda penalties in the past, we have no-indexed most of the product pages hoping in a sort of recovery (not yet seen though!). So, currently we have about 4,000 "index" page compared to about 80,000 "noindex" pages. Now, we plan to add additional 100,000 new product pages from a new publisher to offer our customers more music choice, and these new pages will still be marked as "noindex, follow". At the end of the integration process, we will end up having something like 180,000 "noindex, follow" pages compared to about 4,000 "index, follow" pages. Here is my question: can this huge discrepancy between 180,000 "noindex" pages and 4,000 "index" pages be a problem? Can this kind of scenario have or cause any negative effect on our current natural SEs profile? or is this something that doesn't actually matter? Any thoughts on this issue are very welcome. Thank you! Fabrizio
