What's the best way to switch over to a new site with a different CMS?
-
Is it better to 301 or to closely duplicate each page URL when switching over to a new website from an established site with good ranking and a different CMS ( Drupal switching to Wordpress)?
-
I would base this on the number of pages and your ability to get into the database of the CMS environments. Depending on how deep your link structure is, this may be a quick process. If you are able to map the fields correctly, you can duplicate the aliases with a little elbow grease. Simply export the main drupal content table and reconstruct it as a wordpress table, then upload.
If you don't feel like handling the MySQL for this, I would still recommend duplicating the aliases... 301's are very useful, but it does seem like their is a small bit of decline as the SE's reset your info.
Do keep in mind the your page code will also need attention. Drupal vs Wordpress in its rendering will produce different code. Your SEO capabilities are also going to be effected by the plugins that you are using in WP

You will either duplicate the URL or you wont. There is not any "closeness" factor.
If you can duplicate the URL, you will retain 100% of your backlink value. Otherwise using a 301 is the next best option.
If you do need to change URLs, I would highly recommend taking some time to ensure your new URLs will be stable. Plan to keep your new URL for the next 10+ years even if you change CMS.
-
use tech free URLs (i.e. don't end your pages with .html or .php)
-
take some time to really think out your URL structure. The deepest pages should ideally be within 4 clicks maximum of your landing page. If your URL is /cars/ford/sports/mustang/gt/2011 and if each folder represents a click users need to make, then your URL should be adjusted. Perhaps /ford-mustang-gt/2011 would work.
-
avoid adding anything which may change in your URL. Your company name, a department name, etc. Mergers and other changes are frequent in today's world.

I believe they say you lose some link juice through a 301 redirect so ideally make the URL's the same. WordPress has a lot of easy to handle options with it's permalink structure to mimic most URL set ups. If your old URL's weren't very "seo friendly" then you should make better URL's on your new WP site and 301 the old to the new.
-
We recently had to do this too. URL's changed completely and it was a bit of a pain. It wasn't wordpress/drupal but 301's are the best way. Took a little while to clean up the stragglers too. But if you ensure you point all you can to the new pages your SERPs should carry over fine without penalty I've found. Get those new site maps submitted asap too.
-
Are you going to be on the same host? If you have 1000's of URLs, then 301 and old URLs you don't want to use to category pages. If you have a small site, just make the same URLs and don't 301.

Why Can't Googlebot Fetch Its Own Map on Our Site?
I created a custom map using google maps creator and I embedded it on our site. However, when I ran the fetch and render through Search Console, it said it was blocked by our robots.txt file. I read in the Search Console Help section that: 'For resources blocked by robots.txt files that you don't own, reach out to the resource site owners and ask them to unblock those resources to Googlebot." I did not setup our robtos.txt file. However, I can't imagine it would be setup to block google from crawling a map. i will look into that, but before I go messing with it (since I'm not familiar with it) does google automatically block their maps from their own googlebot? Has anyone encountered this before? Here is what the robot.txt file says in Search Console: User-agent: * Allow: /maps/api/js? Allow: /maps/api/js/DirectionsService.Route Allow: /maps/api/js/DistanceMatrixService.GetDistanceMatrix Allow: /maps/api/js/ElevationService.GetElevationForLine Allow: /maps/api/js/GeocodeService.Search Allow: /maps/api/js/KmlOverlayService.GetFeature Allow: /maps/api/js/KmlOverlayService.GetOverlays Allow: /maps/api/js/LayersService.GetFeature Disallow: / Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ruben

Google couldn't access your site because of a DNS error
Hello, We've being doing SEO work for a company for about 8 months and it's been working really well, we've lots of top threes and first pages. Or rather we did. Unfortunately the web host who the client uses (who to recommended them not to) has had severe DNS problems. For the last three weeks Google has been unable to access and index the website. I was hoping this was going to be a quickly resolved and everything return to normal. However this week their listing have totally dropped, 25 page one rankings has become none, Google Webmaster tools says 'Google couldn't access your site because of a DNS error'. Even searching for their own domain no longer works! Does anyone know how this will effect the site in the long term? Once the hosts sort it out will the rankings bounce back. Is there any sort of strategy for handling this problem? Ideally we'd move host but I'm not sure that is possible so any other options, or advice on how it will affect long term rankings so I can report to my client would be appreciated. Many thanks Ric

I'm redesigning a website which will have a new URL format. What's the best way to redirect all the old URLs to the new ones? Is there an automated, fast way to do this?
For example, the new URL will be: https://oregonoptimalhealth.com/about_us.html while the old one's were like this: http://www.oregonoptimalhealth.com/home/ooh/smartlist_1/services.html I have redirect almost 100 old pages to the correct new page. What's the best and easiest way to do this?

Replacing H1's with images
We host a few Japanese sites and Japanese fonts tend to look a bit scruffy the larger they are. I was wondering if image replacement for H1 is risky or not? eg in short... spiders see: Some header text optimized for seo then in the css h1 {
Technical SEO | | -Al-
text-indent: -9999px;
} h1.header_1{ background:url(/images/bg_h1.jpg) no-repeat 0 0; } We are considering this technique, I thought I should get some advise before potentially jeopardising anything, especially as we are dealing with one of the most important on page elements. In my opinion any attempt to hide text could be seen as keyword stuffing, is it a case that in moderation it is acceptable? Cheers0 -
Fowarding URL's Have No SEO Value?
Good Morning from -3 Degrees C no paths gritted wetherby UK 😞 Imagine this scenario. http://www.barrettsteel.com/ has been optimised for "Steel suppliers" & "Steel stockholders". After runnning an on page SEO moz report its recommended that the target terms should be placed in the url eg www.steel-suppliers.co.uk Now the organisation will not change the url but think setting up a forwarding url eg registering www.steel-suppliers.co.uk to then forward to www.steel-suppliers.co.uk will be of benfit from an SEO perspective. But i think not. So my question is please "is a forwarding url of no value but a permanent URL (struggling for the terminology to describe the url a site is set up with) such as www.steel-suppliers.co.uk would be of value?" Any insights welcome 🙂
