Adding your sitemap to robots.txt
-
Hi everyone,
Best practice question:
When adding your sitemap to your robots.txt file, do you add the whole sitemap at once or do you add different subcategories (products, posts, categories,..) separately?
I'm very curious to hear your thoughts!

Just add the sitemap index file to your robots.txt and let them figure it out from there. You basically just want to point them to your sitemaps and they're able to do that from just the sitemap index. So there's not really a need to list all of them in there.

From a crawlability point of view, it does not matter. Search engines have no more problems crawling multiple sitemap files than they do crawling one very large XML sitemap file.
An advantage of splitting out your XML sitemaps is that if your site is very large, you are less likely to run into the 50 MB / 50,000 URL limit. If the site is quite small, you obviously won't benefit from this.
If you use multiple sitemaps, you may already know that you don't have to list them all in robots.txt. You can use a sitemap index file to point to your subcategory sitemaps (e.g. posts.xml etc.) Any modifications to the 'child' XML sitemaps do not need to be updated in robots.txt - you only need to remember to add/remove them from the XML index file and Google/Bing Search Console.
Since many site applications automatically generate XML sitemaps grouped by posts, categories and products etc., we find it's easier to use this default configuration - and simply add the sitemap index URL to robots.txt.

Website URL, Robots.txt and Google Search Console (www. vs non www.)
Hi MOZ Community,
Technical SEO | | Badiuzz
I would like to request your kind assistance on domain URLs - www. VS non www. Recently, my team have moved to a new website where a 301 Redirection has been done. Original URL : https://www.example.com.my/ (with www.) New URL : https://example.com.my/ (without www.) Our current robots.txt sitemap : https://www.example.com.my/sitemap.xml (with www.)
Our Google Search Console property : https://www.example.com.my/ (with www.) Question:
1. How/Should I standardize these so that Google crawler can effectively crawl my website?
2. Do I have to change back my website URLs to (with www.) or I just need to update my robots.txt?
3. How can I update my Google Search Console property to reflect accordingly (without www.), because I cannot see the options in the dashboard.
4. Is there any to dos such as Canonicalization needed, or should I wait for Google to automatically detect and change it, especially in GSC property? Really appreciate your kind assistance. Thank you,

Role of Robots.txt and Search Console parameters settings
Hi, wondering if anyone can point me to resources or explain the difference between these two. If a site has url parameters disallowed in Robots.txt is it redundant to edit settings in Search Console parameters to anything other than "Let Googlebot Decide"?

Would adding an SSL certificate help my website?
SSL certificates can obviously be a used as a ranking factor by Google, but would a site with no need for an SSL certificate notice a gain by adding one? Is it possible to demonstrate you have an SSL certificate without having some https pages on your site?

What to do about "blocked by meta-robots"?
The crawl report tells me "Notices are interesting facts about your pages we found while crawling". One of these interesting facts is that my blog archives are "blocked by meta robots". Articles are not blocked, just the archives. What is a "meta" robot? I think its just normal (since the article need only be crawled once) but want a second opinion. Should I care about this?

Need Help With Robots.txt on Magento eCommerce Site
Hello, I am having difficulty getting my robots.txt file to be configured properly. I am getting error emails from Google products stating they can't view our products because they are being blocked, and this past week, in my SEO dashboard, the URL's receiving search traffic dropped by almost 40%. Is there anyone that can offer assistance on a good template robots.txt file I can use for a Magento eCommerce website? The one I am currently using was found at this site here: e-commercewebdesign.co.uk/blog/magento-seo/magento-robots-txt-seo.php - However, I am getting problems from Google now because of it. I searched and found this thread here: http://www.magentocommerce.com/wiki/multi-store_set_up/multiple_website_setup_with_different_document_roots#the_root_folder_robots.txt_file - But I felt like maybe I should get some additional help on properly configuring a robots for a Magento site. Thanks in advance for any help. Please, let me know if you need more info to provide assistance.
