Would a Search Engine treat a sitemap hosted in the cloud in the same way as if it was simply on /sitemap.htm?
-
Mainly to allow updates without the need for publishing - would Google interpret any differently?
Thanks

How can you submit them to Search console if they don't live on your root domain? I understand that you can reference the cloud sitemap URL it in the robots.txt but without it being in Search console you lose visibility to errors and indexing issues.

I can second this, it doesn't seem to really matter where you sitemaps are living. Definitely not if you link to them from your robots.txt file as it's a proof that you can influence their location.

I didn't run any experiment on this, but I think it can be done from robots.txt referencing the sitemap file. You can read more here -> https://www.sitemaps.org/protocol.html#sitemaps_cross_submits. So basically, you provide the link to the cloud file and tell the crawlers that it is a sitemap for a given website. I don't think Google will treat these files any differently.
[robots.txt ...] Sitemap: https://yourcloudprovider.com/sitemap.htm (or xml or whatever)
Hope this helps.

Hey all -- ever seen a client with URLs that keep repeating the domain? Something like: client.com/client.com/client.com/subfolder-name. Any idea what glitch could cause that?

Moving from www.domain.com/nameofblog to www.domain.com/blog
Describe your question in detail. The more information you give, the better! It helps give context for a great answer I have had my blog located at www.legacytravel.com/ramblings for a while. I now believe that, from an SEO perspective, it would be preferable to move it to www.legacytravel.com/blog. So, I want to be able to not lose any links (few though they may be) with the move. I believe I would need to do a 301 redirect in the htaccess file of www.legacytravel.com that will tell anyone who comes knocking on the door of www.legacytravel.com/ramblings/blah blah blah that now what they want is at www.legacytravel.com/blog/blah blah blah Is that correct? What would the entry look like in the htaccess? Thank you in advance.

Benefits to having an HTML sitemap?
We are currently migrating our site to a new CMS and in part of this migration I'm getting push-back from my development team regarding the HTML sitemap. We have a very large news site with 10s of thousands of pages. We currently have an HTML sitemap that greatly helps with distributing PR to article pages, but is not geared towards the user. The dev team doesn't see the benefit to recreating the HTML sitemap despite my assurance that we don't want to lose all these internal links since removing 1000s of links could have a negative impact on our Domain Authority. Should I give in and concede the HTML sitemap since we have an XML one? Or am I right that we don't want to get rid of it?

How to prevent directory from being accessed by search engines?
Pretty much as the question says, is there any way to stop search engines from crawling a directory? I am working on a Wordpress installation for my site but don't want it to be listed in search engines until it's ready to be shown to the world. I know the simplest way is to password-protect the directory but I had some issues when I tried to implement that so I'd like to see if there's a way to do it without passwords. Thanks in advance.

Yahoo/Bing Search
Are there current articles that describe the differences in Yahoo/Bing vs Google SERPs? We have solid top 10 rankings in Google for a bunch of competitive keywords but aren't ranking well in Yahoo.
